NEW YORK HERALD, FRIDAY,” § aie time on the corresponding date last FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. | #01 ihe THURSDAY, Sept, 3—6 P, M. The stock market has been active and onthe whole Steady to-day, and the cliques in railroad shares are infusing more animation than usaai of late into the Movements of the stocks which they control; but it is none the less hazardous to buy them, while it ts equally so to sell them “short.” There was @ well istributed business in all the leading railway shares, and during the forenoon prices advanced; but in the afternoon thoy had a drooping tendency. Among the State bonds Tennessee siXes were stronger in consequence of the suits against the Comptroller of Tennessee and the Fourth National Bank, as his fiscal agent, having been withdrawn and the injunction restraining the payment of inter- est vacated. Erie continues to attract the attention of the street and it 1s largely dealt in, but its ductua- tions during the day were limited to a little more than one per cent—namely, from 46% to 47%. The negotiations between this company and the Atlantic and Great Western, with a view to consolidation, are much discussed; but the fact that the subject is not at lower prices, but there was nothing like a general decline, and we retain our previous quotations. California flour was more stondy, and considerabio sales were made, in several Instances as high as 12 per bbl. The sales were about 15,000 bbia., within the range of the quotations annexed. pouthera flour remained quiet but steady, under @ moderate demand and a moderate supply.
