oo) FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. TUESDAY, Sept. 1—6 P. M. ‘The gold market has been steady and moderately active to-day, and the fuctuations were from 1445; at the opening to 145, with the closing transactions prior tothe adjournment of the board at 145, fol- lowing which this price was bid, and the latest quotation on the street was 1454 145}. There was @ good borrowing demand for coin, and loans were made without interest and et one to three per cent for carrying. The gross clearings amounted to $34,102,000, the gold balances to $1,079,458 and ‘the currency balances to $1,740,764, The disbursement of the September in- terest on the ten-lorty loan was commenced this morning, and the Sub-Treasury paid out $300,000 in coin, The steamer Hammonia took out $236,000 in specie, The speculative feeling in the Gold Room ts for the time betng rather tame, but as the leading speculators have for some time past been using all thelr influence to depress the premium by specula- tive means it is probable that it will tend upward rather than downward in the immediate future. The mercantile as qell as the Wall street ‘short’? interest Outstanding is very large, and herein lurks an element of danger to the bears. The growing firmness in the rates of foreign exchange is not with- out effect just now in giving tone to the gold mar- ket, and there is more disposition shown to buy than wane of late. The price varied at intervals as +. 144% 3 P.M... aoe 145 oo 145-645 P. M..... 0146 @ 14536 ‘The railway share market has been quiet and steady during the day, if we except Erie, which, after sell- ing down to 46% before ten o'clock, advanced to 48% under @ rush to cover short contracts based upon the negotiations between the representa- tives of the Erie and the Atlantic and Great Western railways, Wall street having construed the proposed purchase of the latter by the former as favorable to both companies, The advance was not sustained, however, and a decline to 46% took place in the af- ternoon, although 465 was bid at the close. The street is utterly befogged as to the probabie future course of Erle, and it is needless to say that it is equally dangerous either to buy {t or to sell it “short,” and we repeat our advice to the public to leave it severely alone. The interest on the second and third mortgage bonds of the Erie Com- pany was duly paid to-day, and thus the absurd ru- mor of yesterday thatit would not be paid was finally set at rest. The payment of the ten per cent dividend of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Company was begun this morning at its office in this city, and those receiving it were required to sign assent to the issue ef the forty-nine thousand shares of new stock which many months ago became the subject of protracted litigation between the speculative stockholders and the directors. It {8 moteworthy that recourse to legal Proceedings in this case practically avatlea nothing, and that the stockholders engaged in the contest finally withdrew their suits after a useless struggle with their unscrupulous foes. So much for the glorious uncertainty of the law. Money continues almost a drug and loans are made freely on gov t securities and other satisfactory collaterals at three and four per cent, while the banks hold a large un- employed surplus, notwithstanding the loss in deposits they have sustained during the last month, owing mainly to remittances of currency westward. The latter have, however, ‘temporarily fallen off very materially, and the appli cations for accommodation from the West have at the same time ceased. There is but litte city com- mercial paper being made, and the best grade passes st 6a per cent. itis noteworthy that the demand for money in England is quickening, owing in some degree to the partial revival of speculative animation after the prolonged stagnation there. One of the first symptoms of this revival of confidence is observable in the attempt which is being made to restore tho fortunes of the Atlantic and Great Western Railway Company under the management of Mr. McHenry, and as specula- tion gains strength the demand for money will in- crease, and the Bank of England rate of interest will be correspondingly advanced from the low point of two per cent at which it has now stood for many months. It has taken England a long time to re- cover from the financial shock which indirectly re- sulted from the termination of the war in this coun- try, but, to speak colloquially, the bulls on the Lon- don Stock Exchange are beginning to sec daylight ‘at last, although for some time longer specqlative movements will doubtless be undertaken with great caution. Government securities have been dull throughout the day; but there was no pressure to sell “long” stock, although prices receded a fraction, except for ten-forties. There were some sales, however, by tne Dears, who are “short,” at lower figures, and this addition to the short interest will assist the upward tendgncy of prices. There is an active borrowing Gemand for all the late issues of five-twenties, and this is also the case in other cities, and especially Philadelphia. The offerings from the country. are light and tully offset by the investment demand. A further cousiderabie advance in prices is probable, according to all the present indications, At the Close the market was steady at the subjoined quota- tions:—Registered, 1881, 1134 a 11334; coupon, 1831, 113% a 114; 6-20’, registered, 1862, 108% = 108%; 5-20's, coupon, 1862, 11324 @ 11334; do., 1864, 109% a 100%; do., 1865, 11134 @ 11114; do., 1865, January and July, 1089 108'%; do., 1867, 107% @ 107%; do., 1868, 108 @ 103%; 10-40’s, registered, 104 @ 104%; do., coupon, 10544 a 105%; September compounds, 1865, 119%; October do., 118%. At the commencement of business the railway share market was dull and barely steady, and Erie sold down to 46%. At the early session of the open bDoard Erie sold at 46% a 465; and Northwestern pre- ferred at 83%. At the first regular board Erie ad- vanced to 47%, and om the call New York Central closed % higher than at the same time yesterday, Erie 1\, Michigan Southern 3%, Cleveland and Pitts. burg \, Olevelana and Toiedo 1%, Northwestern preferred 4, Miiwaukee and St, Paul preferred }, Ohio and Mississippi %4, North Carolina sixes (ex coupon) %, new issue 1; while Rock Island was '¢ lower, Western Union Telegraph \, and Tennessee sixes (new issue) %. Government securities were steady but inactive. After the call there was a tem- porary rise im Erie to 43% under ® rush to cover “short’? contracts. At the one o'clock open board Erie was quoted at 475, while other stocks were steady. At the second regular board there was a moderate degree of activity and Erie closed %% higher than at the first regular board, Nortiwestern preferred %, Milwaukee and St. Paul %, and preferred 3s, while Iiudson River was \ lower. Government securities were dull and slightly lower. At the open board at haif-past three the market was dull, and Erte declined to 467%, while New York Central sold at 126; Rock Island, 102; Hudson Kiver, 1394; Northwestern preferred, 845; Michigan Southern, 85%, and Tennesse sixes, new, 62.
