FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, TUESDAY, August 18—6 P, M, ‘The gold market opened at 140% this morning and advanced to 146%, following which it gradually de- ¢lined to 145% under the hammering of the bears, assisted by sales of “long” gold by houses and opera- tors carrying railway shares and governments which bad depreciated on their hands. The closing trans- actions, prior to the adjournment of the board at three P. M. were at 145%, and subsequently sales were ‘Made as low as 1455, but the latest quotation on the @treet was 145% 145%. Loans were made at3a4 percent per annum for carrying, The volume of business was large and during the latter Part of the day considerable excitement @ttended the dealings. The gross clearings amount- @d to $74,465,000, the gold balances to $1,623,757 and the currency balances to $2,528,606, The Premium has already been declined so far that a sharp upward reaction is invited, the “short” inte- west outstanding being very heavy. The steamer Cimbria, for Hamburg, took out $183,671 in specie, @nd the Sub-Treasury disbursed $61,000 in coin in payment of interest on the public debt, The price of gold varied at intervals as follows:— + 146% 2:30 P.M 14576 146% 5:50 P. M. 145% This has been a day of great excitement on the Stock Exchange, owing toa further decline in Erte to 483{ and a sympathetic movement in the entire railway list. Margins were consequently weakened, and forced sales of large amounts of stocks took piace. There is no more reason, however, why stocks should decline at this particular time than there was three months ago. The Dear element is noticeably active in all the Wall Street inarkets just now, aud the losses of the street Dave of late been enormous, particularly in Erle, ‘which has declined more than twenty per cent al- most within a8 many days, The market for Erie is being manipulated at present by Daniel Drew anda few others in a manner well calculated to swindle the street,,and the outside public will do well to leave it alone. i Money continues in abundant supply at four per cent for call loans to the Stock Exchange with ex- ceptional transactions at three and five per cent. Tm the discount line thore 18 considerable firmness and the supply of commercial paper 1s larger than usual of late, the best grace being rated at 6a 7 per cent, according to the length of time it has torun. The disposition to realize on stocks reflects to some extent the feeling of apprehension which prevails in relation to the future of the money market; and in this conection it is well to say that all fears of stringency Uirough the operation oi natural causes at any time this year are un- founded, We shall merely have a healthy demand for money at six and seven per cent in October and @ part of September, and the indications are that the supply will be more tian equal to it even when the drain westward is most felt. The Treasury will not, as in former years, interfere with the free circu- ation of the currency. It has ceased to bea bor- Tower and it has no gold to sell, and consequently its operations can have no effect in disturbing the course of monetury affairs, Then, again, currency contraction having long ceased, the trade of the country las become adjusted to the present volume of the circulation, and full provision is made for the redemption of the ‘Afty millions or less of compound interest notes out- Gtanding by the issue of fifty millions of three per cent certificates which cau be eid as legal tender by the banks. Moreover, the general trade of the coun- fry is without any speculative features, and the inte- rior demand for curveacy this autumn will be con- ned almost entirely to the West for the movement of the crops. In the market for government securities an im- proved feeling and a iarger volume of business was generally reported, although at the'close prices were & fraction lower than last evening. ‘The leading dealers are sill enabled to borrow at three per Sent, but the disposition of the street is to over- discount higher rates, and in this way a very heavy “short” interest has been created which will mate- ‘lally assist the upward reaction which must inevi- Jably follow the preseut depression. At the close ‘he market was quiet at the following quotations:— Registered, 1881, 11575 a 114!4; coupon, 1881, 1144 a (1445; 5-20’s, registered, 1862, 10314 a 1083{; 5-20's, oupon, 1862, 11334 @ 1134g; do., 1864, 1085, @ 108%; 4o., 1865, 111% @ 11154; do., 1505., January and July, 407% @ 108; do., 1867, 10714 a 107%; do., 1868, 10734 @ 07 54; 10-40’s, registcre:l, 10314 @ 104; 10-40’s, coupon, 10844 @ 108%; September compounds, 1865, 11634; Uctober do., 118. Jenkins for $10,000 and received in exchange the old Taimadge farm’ of 110 acres, near New Canaan. BURGLARY AT Port CuesteR.—Some rogues ef- fected an entrance into the barroom of the Stillwell Hlouse, Port Cheater, on Friday night last, and helped themselves to a quantity of cizars, quors and other property valued at $100, with which they made good thelr escape. ATTEMPTED BuncLary at Ry#.—Mr. J. DeCamp, proprietor of the Rye Hotel, near the depot, was aroused from his slumbers at an early hour on Satur- day morning by the barking of his dog in the, bar- room, and on down stairs, revoiver tn hand, he found that ore ars had opened one of the win- dows and the dog standing on a chair in front guarding the same. immediate! fterwards Mr. DeCamp discovered @ Wagon be driven of at great speed. A Dytno Man Dracoep From His Brp.—Mr. Michael Burns, who has been for a long time em- ployed as baggage master and agent of the Adams Express at the Port Chester station, recently became duugerousiy tl and made his will, which failed, it ta alleged, to mect the expectations and demands of his wife's relatives. One of the latter, named Pat- rick McLeaa, who had been watching the sick man, fot drunk and with the assistance of Burns’ wie i Mr. Burns and dragged bim out of bed. Infor. mation of this fact being given to H. M. Henderson, Justice of the Peace, be proceeded to the residence of Mr, Burns to put @ stop to such riotous proceed- ings. He was prevent from entering the house by Patrick Miley, who was also drunk, and seized hold of him and threw him down on the ground, Justice Henderson then got the assistance of constables Purdy and a Slater, and after a severe struggle with McLean and Patrick Miley they were secured, when Michael Miley, brother of the prisoner, Patrick Miley, and about & dozen others; en made a desperate effort to rescue the ovrenders, but by a free use of the locust in the hands of the officers the rioters were beaten FF Afew bours alter the occurrence of this di: ene and in- human treatment Mr. Burns breathed H Jas DaRina RosseRy AND RECOVERY OF Bonps.—W, J. Clark, of Southington, Conn, on reaching the Stamford depot on his way home, on Monday after- noon, placed a small valise containing United States bonds, to the amoufit of $7,000, besides other vainable Papers, on a settee whilo he propared a telegram to be sent from that point. fn the meaatime aman and Woman, tramps, (the fitat traveling as an ambreita mender,, picked up the valioe ead peed ot off with i ou bourd O18 trait wards § They puis | their fares to New Rochelle, but got out at Port Cheater, where the woman sold a .pair of gold sleeve bittonsgsaid to be worth abont $4, for fifty cents. One of the ciitzens caused her arrest on suspicion of having stolen the proverty, but as no ew was adduced against her she’ was dis- magistrate before whom she was taken. Her companion fed when she was arrested, Subsequently a jenqran nounced the robbery Yesterday mavens. ‘onstavles Charles Alfonse, of Stamford, and Purdy Slater, of Port Chester, started ofin pursuit of the rogues, On the arrival of the train at Mamaroneck the womaa got on board. The officers therefore went on in the same train to New Roonate and watched her movements in hopes to her accomplice, but as they led to find him there the officers took her into custody, with the valise in her possession, It had been ransacked, however, and the United States bonds and other documents .f value abstracted, but she consented to accompeny the officers to Port Chester and recover them from their place of concealment in tone wall, which she did, so that the officers were enabled to proceed to Stamford with the sae [ke evey in thelr possession by the one o’ciock P. M. and the woman in their custody, THE MATIONAL GAME, Base Ball Notes, The rain storm yesterday interfered with the ball players’ arrangements, and the games which were to have been played were necessarily postponed. ‘There were fully thirteen thousand persons present at the Atlantlo-Mutual game on Monday. Cammeyer and his troops worked all Monday night and yester- day morning trying to straighten up the clover which the immense crowd had flattened on the field. ‘There has been some mistake about the announce: ment of the fact that ts mes were tobe played to- morrow, Friday and Saturday between the Key- ones of mmiladelphi 1@ and the Atlantics, Mutual and Eckfords. The Keystones say they never author- ized anybody to make the matches for them. Cam says “things are mixed,’ but that a certain Mr. Reach, of 1! Keystones, made the arrangements. However, in consequence of the non-arrival of the Keystones, the arch of matches at the Union this week is untinished. It will take almost a week for the excitement cre- ated at the game on Monday to subside, ‘The game to-day at the Capitoline will be of more than ordinary interest, because of the splendid play- ing of the Actives in the late Mutual contest and the standing of both clubs. ‘To-iay the benefit for Zeller comes off at Chicago. The Excelsiors will play against the best nine they ean select, The Unions and Mutuals, on the return of the former, should give a complimentary testimo- nial to Zeller. The second game for the championship of Orange county will be played at Newburg on Thursday after- noon at two o'clock, on the Hudson River grounds, between the Delawares of Port Jervis and Iudson Rivers, ‘The first game was won by the DeMwares— POLITICAL.
