FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. WEDNESDAY, August 12—6 P. M, The gold market developed a strong upward ten- dency this morning, and after opening at 146% and selling at 14654 it advanced gradually, in the midst of congiderable excitement, to 146% and at three o'clock stood very firm at 146%. Subsequently, under a heavy pressure to buy, it advanced to 147 and the latest quotation on the street was 146% a 147, The volume of business transacted was large and the demand was maialy from importers, foreign bankers and other strong parties, who believe that ‘the premium will rise considerably higher under financial and commercial influences alone. and that the political agitation inseparabft from the Presiden- ‘tial canvass and election will aggravate its upward tendency, There isa very large “short” interest out- standing of recent creation, and the purchases to “cover” this will probably carry the price higher in ‘the immediate future than it would otherwise go. The failure of an outside broker involved in heavy gold operations was reported in the gold room this morning, and to Buch @ Feckleas extent have “short” sales been made since Thursday morning last by weak parties that it will not be surprising if more failures occur during the next few days, Our imports continue to Preponderate largely over our exports, the value of ‘the former at this port from the 1st of January to the Ast ef August having been $145,173,534 in specie, freight ana duty unpaid, while that of the exports during the same time, or rather up to the 4th inst., ‘Was only $99,079,058 in currency. For the week end- ing on the 11th inst. the exports, exclusive of specie, were valued at $3,209,312, while the imports for the ‘Week ending on the 7th inst. ataounted to $6,046,093 inspecie, The fact that notwithstanding the per- sistent hammering of the market since Wednesday last it failed to dectine at any time below 1455 has strengthened contidence ina rise from its present point, as 146 is regarded as what is technically calied “hardpan” for some time to come, There was @ good borrowing demand for coin, but the supply ‘was abundant and loans were made “flat” and at two and three per cent for carrying. The gross clearings amounted to $3,269,000, the gold balances to $2,387,159 and the currency balances to $3,845,585. ‘The amount of coin and bullion held by the Bank of France on the 80th of July was £49,042,200 sterling, the largest aggregate yet held bv that institution at any one time. On tie 2vth ult, the Bank of England held only £21,964,651 of specie and bullion in both departments, and it is noteworthy that nearly ali the gold latterly imported into England has found its ‘way immediately into the Bank of France. The Sub-Treasury disbursed $44,000 in coin in payment of interest during the day. In explanation of there Aaving beén no shipment of specie by the Scotia on ‘account of the Alaska payment, it is understood that two transfers were made by telegraph in the sum of £100,000 each to Messrs. Baring Brothers, in London, Dy Messrs. Raphaci & Sons and Messrs. Stern Brothers, on account of their correspondents in thia city, the exchange being settled here after receipt of advices that the transfers had been made on the basis of 10944 a 10934 for sixty days bills, The varia- tions in gold during the day are thus shown:— 10:06 A. M. +146% 3:00 P. a P.M. 140% 6:40 P. ‘There has been a somewhat firmer market for rail- way shares and border State stocks to-day than we have had to record of late, but the speculative feel- ing of the street continues tame, and the task of gustaining prices devoives entirely upon cliques. The outside public displays great apathy ‘with respect to all Stock Exchange movements, and the brokers aud other professional speculators act with extreme caution. Towards the close the im- Proyement of the morning was lost, and there was more pressure to sell than to buy. Money continues abundant at three and four per cent on call, the sup- ply being largely inexcess of the demand. In dis- counts there is no activity, and the best grade of commercial paper ts still scarce and quoted at 534 #6 per cent. At the commencement of business the railway share market was dull but firm, and at the eany session of the open board Erie sold at 5834, New York Central at 1285 and Rock Isiand at 112%. The transfer books of the Rock Island Company have been returned to this city and will be closed on Saturday, the 16th instant, pre- Paratory to the payment of the ten per cent dividend in cash on the 18 of September. The divi- end in question inciudes the two half-yearly divi- dends due in April and October in the present year, the firat of which was suspended owing to the litiga- tion in which the company was involved, growing out of the issue of the 49,000 shares of new stock. Stockholders before receiving this dividend will have to sign assent to the issue of this new stock as part of the permanent capitai of tho company. As all the suits against the company have been either with drawn or dismissed this will probably be done. Atthe first regular board the market was quiet but firm, and on the call Now York Centra! closed 1% higher than atthe same time yesterday, Eris 1%, Reading %, Rock Island %, Fort Wayne 1, Pacific Mail % and Tennessee sixes, new issue, 1. Govern- ment securities were firm at a fractional advance. At the open board at one o’clock the market was firm, and New York Central sold at 120}; and Cleveland and Pittsburg at 87%. At the second regular board prices were well sustained, alihough the volume of business was light. On the call New York Central closed 3 higher than at the first regular board, Michigan Southern % and Tenneasee sixes, ex coupon, 1. Government securities were dall but steady. After the call quotations tended downward, and at the open board at half-past three Erie sold at 57% and New York Central at 128%. During the remainder of the afternoon the market ‘was dull and drooping, and at the close at half-past five o'clock the following quotations were current:— Now York Central, 1235 9 128%; Erie, 67% @ 68; eading, 91% a 91%; Michigan Southern, 86 @ 86%; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 87% @ 87%; Cleveland and Toledo, 100%; Rock Island, 112% a 112%; Northwestern, 833; a 83%; Northwestern preferred) $294 @ 82%; Fort Wayne, 108% 109; Ohio and Mis- slasippi, 20% @ 207%. ‘There has been 9 very confident feeling all day in the market for government securities, and especially with regard to the home bonds, as distinguished from those for which there is a foreign demand. The inquiry was chiefly for the five-twenties of the mew issue of 1865 and 19867, while the exportable bonds were neglected. The cheapest bonds on the lst are the five-twenties of 1864, which are quoted at 110% @ 110%, although they carry the same amount of accrued interest as the bonds of 1865, which are quoted at 112% @ 112%. There is consequently a margin of 1% per cent fora legitimate rise in them, supposing the bonds of 1865 to remain steady at their present price, After the somewhat prolonged duiness we have experienced a more active and buoyant market for our national securities would -weom to be inevitable. At the close it was firm at the subjoined quotations:—Registered, 1881, 115 a 115}; Coupon, 1881, 115% @ 115%; 5-20's, regis- Cored, 1862, 100% & 109%; 5-20’s, coupon, 1962, 114K a M14%; dO., 1864, 110% a 1107; do., 1865, 1125 a 112%; do., 1965, January and July, 10944 @ 109%; do., 1867, 10054 @ 10934; do,, 1868, 1094 a 10034; 10-40"s, regis- tered, 105% @ 106; 10-40’s, coupon, 109%; a 109%; Sep- tember compounds, 1865, 118%; October do., 116. General Monages Advanciag Agninst General Bruzual at Puerte Cabelio—Tue Coasting SANTIAGO DE Cusa, August 7, 1868. ‘The news from Caracas ts to July 22, The revolu- tion had not ceased, although the province and State of Caracas are going on well enough under the pro visional ministry formed by General Monagas. Gen- eral Monagas was, at last dates, in Valencia, with four thousand men, having detached bis vanguard against Puerto Cabello, where General Bruzual has all the forces he could gather together. In the vicinity of said town there have been several skir- mishes between the belligerents, but it was generally believed that Brazual would soon have to abandon the point. The naval force at Bruzual’s command did not succeed in blockading the port of Laguayra, although a small war steamer of Falcon’s was at- tempting to do so, ‘The only States that still sustain Falcon are Bar- quisimeto and Zulia, The former, which in all re- spects is a very finportant State, 1s oroee by Gen- eral Patino, who is a personal frien: State of Zulia, of which ‘overned by Genera! Southeriand, an Enghsh West dian of color, also friendly to Falcon. The government of Monagas has conceded the right of the coasting trade to the vessels of all na- tions for @ term of six months, commencing from July 16, The same government has declared null and void all sales and contracts made by Bruzual, in- cluding those of the steamer Maporari.and other ves- sels of war. There waa no ship of warin Laguayra when the last packet sailed. The American Oonsu! had asked for one from Jamaica, but none were there either, WATERING PLACE NOTES.
