FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. ‘Turspay, July 21-6 P. M. ‘The gold market opened rather weak this morning, the earliest transactions were at 142%, following rnich, however, there was a gradual advance to 34334, and the closing price prior to the adjourn- ment of the board was 1431s, while the latest quota- tion on the street was 43 a 1433. Francisco to-day, had $700,000 in gold on board, Money is in extremely abundant supply at four Percent on mixed collaterals and three on govern- Meni securities, while the demand from the Stock Exchange is only moderate and the applications for Giscounts are on a very restricted scale, the best @rade of commercial paper being scarce and in re- juest at five percent, The domestic exchanges are favor of this centre, and there is no prospect of the prevailing monetary ease being disturbed for an indefinite length of time to come, although the rate Of interest will doubtless be advanced to seven per cent after the drain westward to move the crops sets in. No advance in the rate above 4a5 per cent 18, however, looked for until after the middle of August. ‘the calls for remittances from the interior having elmost ceased. The rallway share market continues farm in tone, and the signs of the times are favorable ‘to higher prices and greater activity. Government securities were firm but quiet during the forenoon, and at the quarter past two o'clock call they became strong and active, five-twenties of 1867 selling up to 1091¢ and coupon sixes of 1881 to 11534 a 1154, against 11434 bid at the opening, the ‘gdvance in the last mentioned being stimulated by a Teported “‘corner” in the bonds of that issue dated 1864 on the Frankfort Bourse, with which those dated in 1861 sympathized, under the impression that they May be accepted instead of those of the later date. ‘The greatest activity was in the new issues of five- twenties, and at the close the market was very frm @t thesubjoined quotations:—Registered, 1881, 114% 114}¢; coupon, 1881, 11534 91153; 5-20’a, registered, 1862, 109% a 11034; 5-20’s, coupon, 1862, 11436 a 114); 0., 1864, 11134 8 11154; do;, 1865, 112% a 112%; do., January and July, 1093¢ a 10934; do., 1867, 10034 810954; do., 1868, 109% @ 109%; 10-40's, registered, 08% @ 1083g; 10-40’s, coupon, 1083 a 1085; July }.30’8, 109 a 109%; August compounds, 1865, 11834; September do., 118; October do., 11734. At the commencement of business the stock mar- ket was firm, and particularly so for the Western failway shares, At the early session of the open board prices were slightly higher in some instances than at the close last evening. At the first regular board railway shares continued firm, but State stocks, aud especially Tennessee sixes of the new issue, were weak, at a decline of % a 134, Missouri alxes excepted, which advanced 3. New York Cen- tral closed 5 lower on the call than at the same time yesterday, Erie 4, Rock Island %, Tennessee sixes (ex coupon) %, new issue 13 and North Carolina sixes (ex coupon) 1; while Reading was x higher, Cleveland and Pittsburg %, Fort Wayne %, Milwau- Kee and St. Paul %, do. preferred %, and Ohio and Mississippi %. Government securities were steady ‘at a decline of 4. At the open board at one o'clock the market was steady and dull. At the second regular board it was stronger for the North- western shares, but otherwise without change. Reading closed 44 higher on the call than at the first regular board, Northwestern preferred 34, Fort Wayne }, Milwaukee and St. Paul 34, do. preferred ‘é and Western Union Telegraph %, while Michigan southern was 4 lower. Government securities were itrong at an advance of 34 @ 3¢ percent. During the remutnder of the afternoon the market was quiet but steady, aud at the close at a quarter-past five o'clock the quotations were as subjoined:—New York Central, 13s a 133%; Erie, 68% a 6344; Hudson, River, 158 a 1595; Reading, 95.4 a 954%; Michigan Southern, 91%¢ a 9154; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 87; Rock Island, 107% @ 10734: Northwestern, 831¢ @ 83%; do. preferred, 83%( a 8374; Fort Wayne, 11035 9.110%; Ohio and Mississippi, 29%; a 20%; Pacific Mail, 101', a 1013s; Western Union Telegraph, 3534 @ 3545. The foreign exchange market was weak in tone ‘under an increased floating supply of bills; bat rates were nominally unchanged, the leading drawers declining to sell sterling bills at sixty days below 11044, although bankers’ bills drawn against five- twenties were offered at 110. At the close bankers’ ‘bills at sixty days were quoted at 110a110%; at three days, 110% a 110%; commercial bills, 10914 a 10074. Bankers’ bills on Paris at sixty days, 5.13% a 5.124%. Hampden Robb waa elected ys Coin was in superabundant supply, and loans were made at rates varying from one to four per cent for carrying and ‘Without interest. The gross clearings amounted to $64,205,000, the gold balances to $1,397,832, and the cy balances to $2,001,626, The recent ad- ‘Vance in the premium by stimulating shipments Of bonds increased the supply of foreign bills and reduced the rates of exchange, which reacted ‘Upon the gold market, ana, together with sales to realize, produced the decline from the highest point of last week. The bulls are now trying to rally gold again, but the indications are in favor of @ decline Tather than an advance from the present point. The Operators for a rise attach considerable importance to the agitation of the question whether the princt- Pal of the five-twenty loan is payable in gold or greenbacks; but the real solution of this lies in mak- Ing the one worth as much as the other, and this an only result from good financial management @nd the consequent improvement of the public credit. ‘The steamer Hammonia from this port took Out $211,000 in specie, and the Nebraska, from San R: Gorn meni, eliy the adverse turn of the cable news exert for in 35 for new am- ber Geotaia ‘ant common ‘white Malch job and 822736 for white really vse new mixed mostly of unsound.
