SARATOGA, SARATOGA SPRINGS, July 17, 1868. Every New Yorker who finds 103 degrees Fahrenheit in the shade an uncomfortable figure may reduce the temperature to ninety-eight by embarking on the Al- bany boat for an up trip. To be sure the boat is crowded and the great desire of everybody to sit on aeck renders your chances of occupying a seat rather doubtful unless you arrive early, yet nothing can prevent an easter respiration and consequently more resignation to the ills of life. The journey from Albany to Saratoga would be agreeably accom- plished were it not for that inevitable part of soci- ety—babies—whuich are out in strong force and seem to have chartered the boats, cars, stages, &c., for their particular use. Not that we would deny them the enjoyment of any of their rights, for doubt- less they are indispensabie members of the commu- nity and Supply a crying want in society, yet it oan- not be denied that their “sweetness” is chiefly dis- tinguishable by thetr parents and that strangers are excusable for passing on to the next car. The warm weather of the last week has sent many here and tue hotels are filling. The proprietors say they have never known more here at this point of the season. The rush does not commence before ust. At the American we noticed Judge Con- nolly and ex-Governor Dillingham. Congress Hall makes decidedly the grandest appearance of any hotel on the street. The freshness of new bricks and paint gives it a comfortable appearance, and the veranda, which extends the whole length of the building, is always cool. Among the guests here are Jon Minor Botts and the Southern Genersis McGeary, Young and Baker. We also noticed H. . Hunnewell, of Boston. ‘The firat ball of the season took place last week. A concert was given yesterday at eleven o'clock to the sojourners at Saratoga X the “Italian Trio,” Sohieias, Padovant and Rocco. A novel feature of the concert was the instrument melodion, which is really a wonderful affair. The ra House, at the rear of the Union grounds, opened last it with a concert from Charley Pettengill’s Star Minstrels, The Opera House will be this’season under the man- agement of Mr. A. W. Near the Springs a new buat of Lincoln has been erected. Fourteen years ago, when | was here, the ‘bust of Henry Clay was draped and the country was mourning his death. Then Lincoin’s face was un- familiar and his name anknown. Now his picture hangs in every Louse and his name is immortal. The circular railway, which is now an established institution, needs no comment. Hard by ts a target ground for practice with the Indian bow and arrow, which the ladies largely patronize. The accuracy of the aborigines’ aim provokes a desire to try, and they achieve a woman's usual success in this depart- ment of pleasure by hitting once in ten times, with the mark three rods off and of the form and size of an Indian, stuffed with sawdust. A somewhat unique entertainment is going on in a tent near by. A father and mother are exhibiting their three babies, who, they say, are of the same age—all giris and look exactly alike. The ladies, It is useless to say, Warm about the tent and investing teu cents take @ peep at the wonders, AMUSEMENTS. Nisto’s TaRaTRE.—The come opera of “Blue Beard’ was given here last night for the first time by Mr. Bateman’s company. Such has been the success in the city of the “Grand Duchess” and the “Belle Héléne,” that any new presentation of a piece by the same author is sure of an audience, and the large theatre to which Mr. Bateman has changed his base was densely crowded in every part. The audience was of the first class in intel- igence and character, and was made up in a great degree of French residents. The new piece was received with every evidence of favor, the new artista were very warmly made welcome, and | “Barbe Bleue” will doubtiess stand in the annals as & great success, Nevertheless it is not so d aH either of its predecessors. It is without the rich extravagance of thou that is the distinguishing excellence of this style of piece, and that was so happy in the “Belle Héidne,” and without the int and humor of the “Duchess.” Having neither | of these it has no equivalent.
