Blockade of Mazatlan by an Englinh Man-of= War—Ontrages on the Captain ef the Chanticleer=He Demands Immediate Re- dress=The Official Correspondence. MAZATLAN, June 20, 1868, The port of Mazatian was delared under blockade to-day by the English man-of-war Chanticicer, Cap- tain Bridge. The following !mportant correspon- dence explains the whole affair:— HER BRITANNIC MAJESTY’S SHIP CHANTICLEER, AT MAZATLAN, June 17, 186! No. 1. Sm—As senior naval officer of her Britannic Majesty’s navy on the west coast of Mexico, I have the honor to bring to your notice the following case of insult to an officer of her Majesty's ship Chanticleer by the Custom House authorities, and also to their de- tention of the sum of $368 belonging to her Majesty, the Queen of England, a permit to pass this money through the Custom House having. previously been granted. On the iéth Instant Mr. Wallace, payinas- ter of her Britannic Majesty's ship Chanticleer, re- ceived the sum of $633 trom Mr. Fulirkin for the use of her Majesty’s service, and a permit to pass the Custom House was procured. A portion of thie sui ‘was expended on shore in payment of provisions for the use of her Majesty’s e@hiy under my command, On this oMcer's arrival at the wharf, in company with myself, he was ordered into the Custom House and was told (hat he was suspected of having money in bis ssion for which no permission had been granted, and was ordered to produce the money he had about him. He immediately gave the balance of the $683 he had received from Mr. Fubrkin and was asked if he had any more money. He replied no; but afterwards, on being told to be very careful what he replicd, he stated that he had some private money of emall amount, which he produced and which was returned to him, After producing the whole of the money, and stating that he had no more, he was ordered to be searched in presence of the commandant, the permit ha been produced. No notice was taken of it, but the money was con fiscated; and on application again on the same day and snbsequently this morning the Custom House authorities refused to returp it, When the paymas- ter was ordered into the Custom House I directed him not to give up the Vener os go into the Custom House, as the permit would brought. A person who spoke —— explained to me in an insulting manner that I had no authority or command there. and was insulting in bis manner. J therefore ask him what he was, and went away. This person was the same who applied to me some short time since to give him protection on Generai Martinez defeat, ashe stated he was implicated with him. Having failed to procure the money from the Custom House authorities, I beg to submit the tujustice of the de- tention to your consideration and request that you will be pleased to order its repayment.
