The last statement of the associated banks of this city has been. misinverpreted in some quarters, and therefore we call attention to the fact that the @pecie returns of the banks are not included in theiz legal tenders. Thus the latter decreased $3,504,307 during the week; but as the specie increased $7,280,618, it follows that there wasa net increase in the reserve of $3,686,221, and the banks held on Saturday last $68,531,542 in legal tender notes in aa- ition to $19,236,348 in specie, making a total reserve Of $87,766,890, The error, therefore, of deducting the specie instead of adding it to the legal tenders is ob- ‘vious. The Erie trans- Ter books were opened for inspection this morning, and a crowd of anxious certificate holders was in attendance. The reault of the comparison of the cer- cates presented with the books was that four of former were found to have been altered to one hundred shares, one of which was from one share to ne hundred. The transfer books will be opened permanently for the transfer of stock on Wednesday morning next. It transpires that the Hoyt forgeries were at first largely overestimated, and that the Probable aggregate of his frauds does not exceed a hundred and fifty thousand dol- lars. The success of the operations of this scoundrel should, however, serve asa warn- ing to the brokers to adopt the Clearing House sys- em of making stock deliveries, and to railway and other corporations to have their certificates water fmarked and printed on tinted paper, which acid Would discolor. The full effect of the frauds has ‘evidently been felt on the Stock Exchange, and the tendency of prices is upward again. The suit of a Stockholder of the Union Pacific Railway Company jPgainst that corporation and the Crédit Mobilier at- ‘tracts much attention as the time draws near for the &@rgument of the case on the 21st inst., when the de- Tendants wil! have to show Cause against the injune- ion upou both companies granted by Judge Barnard. The plaintiff im the case, in reply to a letter written by Mr. Durant, the Vice Pre- Bident of the company, has propounded a series of Amportant questions bearing upon the acta of the directors, but these remain unanswered, and it is considered remarkable that Mr. Durant, after opening ‘the correspondence, should have so suddenly with- Grawn from it. The questions invoived in the suit. Gre of great public interest, and fresh light is looked for upon the subject. The crop prospects in all @ections of the country continue very encouraging, while the earnings of the railways are considerably larger than they were last year. At the commencement of business the stock market ‘Was steady but dull, and at the first regular board the volume of transactions was light. Erie closed % than at the same time on Saturday, Reading <, Michigan Southern % Cleveland and Pitteburg fis Jaland %, Fort Wayne %, and Tennessee 8, new, . Government securities were inac- but steady, At the open board at one o'clock were only fractional changes. At the second fegular board the market continued quiet but steady, Bad Reading closed + lower than at the first regular board and Cleveland and Pittsburg %, while North- ‘westera preferred was higher.
