SUBA. he steamship Morro Castle, Captain .dams, rom ‘ana on the 4th inst., arrived nere gesterday. mors of an Imperialist Invasion of Mexico oison in the Havana Aqueduct—Copper nd Silver Mines—Coolie Trade—The, New emetery=Cholera Renppearing. Havana, July 4, 1868. good deal of private confabutation has recently nheld among the Mexican imperialist refugees ated in this city, which with any others would peak another invasion of Mexico, Baron de dai, a Hollander and nobleman of huge ‘sical developments and formerly Lieutenant onel of the imperial Mexican gendarmerie and e chief of the secret police of “Lugar Tentente,’? rquez, is said to be the person having at present assigned task of “keeping the irons hot.’ neral Taboada, one of the most active of Maxt- ian’s offcers, however, is no longer here. He ‘gone to New Orleans, it is said, to superintend getting up of the expedition that was to leave t port for some unindicated point on the coast, of State of Tamaulipas, Ex-Imperial Commissioner ‘eau is in Cienfuegos, where he is said to ‘e purchased a sugar plantation for $200,000 by talments of $50,000, the first of which he paid vn in cash. He is just now deeply interested be- es in the acqueduct projected in said city. Santa na, the old hero par excellence, is penniless, and wequently the cork leg stirs very seldom from his {rural and suburdan retreat in Luyano, about ee miles from town. ‘is reported that the waters of Vento, which were supply the new aqueduct of Havana (only partly istructed), have been found to contain poisonous ticles. If the report be confirmed by proper mica! analization it will be sad news to the citt- 18 of this city, who have been looking anxiously ards the completion of the aqueduct which was ‘urnish an abundant supply of good, clear, whole- 1€ Water, 80 much needed here. n the districts of Mantua and Guanes several omising copper veins have been discovered, and it hought that silver can also be found in “paying antities,"” The working of the mines, however, inot now be made profitable, on account of the da nature of the country, the absence of ds, and the high rates of transportation. project is on foot for the formation of ublic road that shall obviate these difficulties, and yernment assistance therefor is being solicited. If inted and the necessary road be made no doubt | ina few years the copper and silver mines of ntua and Guanes will be yielding fair dividends to those engaged in working them. during the last month of June three French vessels, * Russian and one Spanish have arrived from cao, landing 1,756 coolies, or rather more than the mthly average since January 1. The bark Ville de Lo had not a single death on the voyage, which vended to 121 days. This deserves noting, being recedented in the annals of the coolie traae. In inection with Chinamen, I understand that three »iies were lately fonnd murdered, from the Bel- tto the Esperanza estates, near Colon, ‘and no e rs yet been found as to the authors of this ocity. ‘he college at Sanc Espiritu has for some time *n in a languishing condition, owing to a defic sy of patronage and consequent want of funds. remedy this it was proposed to remove it to Villa ura, where the larger centre of populatton would »bably secure it more scholars and greater income an it has so far enjoyed. The good [folks of Sancti piritu. have naturally become alarmed at this »posed removal and are laboring to prevent it. A althy planter residing near, Don Francisco de osta, and his wife, both favorably known for their inificence to all charitable and educational enter- ‘$08, have offered to donate $50,000 to the college, yvided it be not removee. This liberal offer wil doubt be accepted und the imstitution remain ere it 1s. *rom to-morrow and for three days folowing all ‘officers and soldiers of this department are to ar their dress suits in sign of rejoicing at the re- it marriage of H. R. H. the Infanta Isabel with the unt of Girgenti. A serious catastrophe occurred on board Her tholic Ie fe steam frigate Carmen, off Matan- 3, on Thursday afternoon at two o'clock. The icers and crew were engaged at target practic ten a Se exploded from the centre the starboard battery, killing four men and panini seen more, some very dangerously. These blacks generally carry ‘ives, poignards and other murderous implements their persons, and for the last few nights all who 188 the walls inside after a certain hour have been »sely Searched and deprived of the implements und on them, The subject of the new cemetery has in been ought forward by the liberal press. e desire own by the public to have a new cemetery is not recent growth; the project originated years ago ulasum of magnitude was subscribed very soon ter. A desirable ground was selected and pur- \ased, but owing to certain doubts raised as to the uidity of the titles furnished the affair has ever nee formed a newspaper polemic. In the meantime er objections have nm found against the pur- 1ase, inciuging distance, location, situation, hy- enic propriety, &c., ali which have been a ith great zeal and In tarn combatted with energy wiability. But the reault so far is that the people *e still without their cemetery; men, women and pildren failed to cease aying while the question as under discussion, and the many demises having ed up all the niches in the vaults of the old cem- ery, and taken Ks all that portion of mother earth estined towards Interment of those whose families ere too poor or unwilling to induige them in the lux- ry of an after life resting place in sealed, 1 cavities. Of late bodies have been de- ed in a temporary graveyard, located near Fort tares, and for many reasons ill-suited to the pur- oses for which it is now employed. This has evived the question witb increased intensity of dis- ussion, but without any greater prospect of an early olution. Fortunately the Captain General has, vith his well known decision of character, iven proofs of siding with the citizens. le may soon effectually dispose of the many érdian knots involved in the question. A royal Pecree of some years’ standing authorizes the Cap- ains General of Cuba to appoint committees to locate, upervise and manage cemeterics. AS soon s the ecclesiastic authorities got scent that j| Pays was about reproducing that decree hey made a strong effort with General Lersundi o stop all further publications on the subject, but \espite olerical importunities his Excellency did not ssent to their desire. A committee has been ap- sointed to carry out the completion of the new emetery. We now awalt their report, when not mprobably more will come to light out of this Tair. T cannot that there is @ natural transition rom this graveyard question to that of the health the city. The heaith of Havana, I t to Bay, shotas good as might be desired, e endemic sholera of last year Was only slumbering—it never eft the isiand compietely, though it ap- yeared to have been “played out’ after a visita- jon that lasted about four months. The ieat has been very intense during the latter part of ‘une, but, as the general health is good the people were less cautious than usual during this season of + burning sun, rains at intervals, bad fruit and worse water. The dread monster took them guite oy surprise not many days ago, when the sanitary \ers recorded an unprecedented number of cases and the attending mortality. The first two or three days that followed these sad results, the consternation and alarm was intense and went far © aggravate the malady. It appears to have been son‘ined for some weeks to “Matanzas, but lately tt broke out with extraordinary virulence in the madhouse, several miles beyond the city. The phy- aician of that instiintion was removed by the city governor and another named Garcia appointed in his place, This gentleman at once realized the responsi- otuty of his position, and discovering that the hoe pital was destitute of medicines and of everythin, indispensable to the proper care of the sick, he al once repalred to the Captain General and made his representations to his Excellency, He attributed the jarge mortality reported there to this fact above all What with the dread inspired by the mortality and the customary consump- tion of summer fruit and vegetables, and the excess of heat and fain alternating, the disease soon spread. Even in the palace a case Another in the Intendencts, where Sefor a (a judge of the High Court of justice and in law of Count Balmaseda) died on Thursday cl was quietly buried at eight P. M., with only one or two fnendiy followers. e malady has declined considerably. The people have become more cautious, and copious rains have purified the sphere. Fortunately it has not assumed any cnie proportions, and although this time it has been confined altogether to the blacks, soolles and indigent wnites, as it was last y the diatantion bas been as rapid as it broke out. The authorities, im order to be fully prepared for ail eventualities, have appointed relief committees in the several wards, done last winter, I have not any casualties among the inlpe a epi not cases of yellow fever, principally in town, not 60 many in the harbor, and the mortality is very moderate. Of course, clean bilis of health are \onger issued—thoee that are given bear testl- ony to “some cases of yellow fever and cholera.” We learn from Santiago de Cube that some coffee i . lantations have been sold recently, to be ‘ fasta ae sugar estates. The coffee plantation ‘eaalia, without slaves, sold for $13,000; the Yaya, a nine slaves, sold for $20,000; a smail one of Mr. Nelson Lafargue, gd negroes, sold for 3,900; another of Mr. Doré, without slaves, for 5,000; another, with one thousand hundred weight of ‘coffee to be harvested, sold for $7,000; and one with seventeen slaves sold for $10,000, the property of Mr. J. Minet Junion, Accident @p the Carmeu—Cholera on the In- crease at Matanzas—Sugar—Freights. Matanzas, July 2, 1868, A dreadful accident occprred this morning on board the Spanish war ship Carmen, engaged in ex- ercises off this port. One of the guns (English rife) burst and killed three mariners, while several others were badly wounded. Two are officers, The cause is supposed to have originated by the point of the ball having been put in a Wrong way. ‘ There is again an increase of the endemic cholera. The datly cases are now about ten and the average mortality seven. Itis rather of a malignant type. The weather is very hot. American Consular Changes—Customs Re- turns at Cienfuegos. CIENFURGOS, June 30, 1863, Mr. Charles Fox arrived in the last steamer from Trinidad to take charge of the United States Consular agency at this place, no person here qualified for the position having been found willing to assume the position under the objectionable character of its present restrictions. When, one year ago, Cienfuegos was made the chief naval station for the south side of the island, all the chief officers and authorities of the district were transferred from Trinidad to this port, and it was expected that the head Con- sulate of the United States, till then assigned to Trinidad, would have been transferred in a like manner, especially as it was known that at some previous period the United States government had proposed such a change in the respective consulates, through the Sggeticn of Commodore Wilkes, who represented at Washington the advantages of this harbor and its vastly superior importance in trade and connections with American interests over Trini- dad. To the surprise and detriment of commercial men, the head Americen Consulate has not as yet been removed to this place. During the past month the receipts at the Custom House were $45,00¢—an increase of $581 over those of the same month last year. During May the ex- ports of the port too amounted to 12,199 hhds. sugar, 212 boxes do. and 4,460 tierces molasses, of which 9,434 hhds, and 212 boxes sngar and 3,628 tierces molasses went to the United State: Compared with May of 1867 these figures show an increased ex- portation of 6,032 hhds, of sugar and 2,117 tierces molasses. Butchers and Hucksters Resist the Tax—Yel- low Fever at Villa Clara. CIENFUEGOS, Jnly 1, 1868. Aserious demonstration was made this morning at the market house by the butchers, hucksters and other vendors as a sort of protest against the new increase of contributions enforced from to-day for the new term. But few of them being able to meet the new contribution from their earnings, by a simul- taneous movement ali the stalls and counters were ciosed, and the owners refused to sellany of their goods to the public until compelled to do so by a body of the police, who finally contrived to quiet the disturbance. The yellow fever is reported as very severe at Villa Clara. The troops (recruits) in the barracks have suffered heavily from it, THE SEVENTH REGIMENT EXCURSION. The Seventh regiment, Colonel Clark commanding, will leave this city to-day for the city of Norwich, Conn, where the citizens of that place have been making for some time past great preparations for its reception, Grafulla’s fall band and the entire drum corps of the command will accompany the regiment. There will be a grand dress parade of the troops shortly after the arrival at Norwich, when Governor English will review them. The citizens are to give a hop on Friday evening to the regiment, after which the comniand will return homeward, arriving in this city on Saturday morning. Some six hundred men will turn out on this occasion and a good time generally will be had by the men. A. WNANTEL, PIER AND OVAL MIRROR PRAMES, + gilded and in walnut.
