fINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Webwespay, June 24—6 P. M. ‘The gold market was firm during the early part Of the day, and after opening at 1401, sales were Made at 140%, but subsequently there was a gradual ‘eoline to 140%, at which price the closing transac- ons prior to the adjournment of the board were wecorded, There was considerable speculative ac- Uvity im favor of a higher premium, and the borrow- {pg demand for coin from the “shorts” was brisk. ‘Loans were made at 5-64, 1-16, 3-64 and 1-32 per cent per diem respectively, and at 6a 10 per cent per an- Dam for borrowing, as well as without interest to @ither borrower or lender. The gross clearings mounted to $53,155,000, the gold balances to $1,524,433 and the currency balances to $2,136,323. ‘The steamer Australasian took out $374,954 mn specle. American silver is quoted at 6% 8 7% per cent be- flow gold, and Mexican dollars are quiet at 103% a 103% in gold. ~The market has been firm for Reading and the Chicago and Northwestern shares all day, but Erie @ontinued heavy without any apparent cause. Loans @ontinue tobe made at 3a 4 per cent on call, with the’ supply largely in exceas of the demand, while @rat class commercial paper is scarce and in re- quest at 5 a6 per cent. Government securities were dull and steady during the morning, but in the afternoon they yielded lightly under the efforts of some of the dealers to depress them for the purpose of buying at the de- cline. It is unquestioned that there will be a heavy dnvestment demand for bonds in July growing out of the disbursement of nearly forty millions in coin by the Treasury, and about thirty millions more in cur- wency by the banksand railways, insurance and other Companies, and the etfect of this upon prices ts easily foreséen. Hence those who have not all the bonds they require are watching their opportunity to buy before the demand. referred to is felt, ‘The bulls in GOld, too, were anxious to influence the market for Bve-twenties abroad adversely by producing a lower Quotation for the bonds here this evening. The Market. was quiet all day and as a rule Qoctivity ts necessary to buoyancy, the disposition on the part of small dealers and speculators being to fealize in the midst of these periodical lulls, and the large dealers are always buyers under such circum- Btances. All the indications are favorable to con- ¢inued improvement in our national securities. At the close the market yas steady at the following Quotations:—Registered, 1881, 11344 a 11314; coupon, 2881, 118 @ 118%; 5-20's, registered, 1862, 109% a 110; ©-20's, coupon, 1862, 11334 a 113%; do., 1864, 111% a 21154; do., 1865, 11134 a 111%; do., 1865, Januaxy and Tuly, 114.8 11434; do., 1867, 114% a 114%; do., 1868, ‘110 @ 11044; 10-40's, registered, 107 a 107%<; 10-40's, Coupon, 107% a 10734; June 7.30’s, 11044 a 11034; July ‘%.80'a, 110% a 110%; August compounds, 1865, 11834; September do., 118; October do., 117%. The new bonds of 1868 are in demand and relatively + higher Shan those of 1867, of which last there is a moderate @upply. The time for conversion of seven-thirty Motes of the June issue has been extended to duly 15, and for those of July to August 1, The set- tlement of interest, however, in the case of both Lasues, will be made, as at present, only to July 1, 80 that holders will derive no advantage from delay. At the commencement of business the stock mar- ket was firm but quiet, and at the early session of the open board Reading sold at 103%, Michigan Southern 92, and Northwestern preferred 19%.
