NEW, YORK ;MRALD; | WEDNESDAY, JUNE 24, /1868;-TRIPLE (SHEET) FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. TuESDAY, June 23-6 P. M. The gold market was rather heavy during the early part of the day, and after opening at 140% the Price declined to 140, following which, however, there wag a gradual advance to 140%, and the closing quotation prior to the adjournment of the board was at 1403; 4 140%. There was an active borrowing demand for coin, and loans were made at Tates varying from 1-64 to 3-64 per cent per diem, and at 3a14 per cent per annum for borrowing. Afver three o'clock, however, apprehensions of in- creased scarcity to-morrow caused 1-16 per ‘diem to be bid for the use of gold from Wednesday to Thursday by the “shorts,” out of ‘whom the bulls are eager to make capital by aggra- vVating the natural scarcity of coin at this particular ‘time. ‘The Treasury will not anticipate the payment of the July interest, it is semi-oMoially announced, ‘unless to the extent of a day or two. Thus tt is not Probable that any checks will be given in exchange ‘for coupons until Monday next; but where banks at distant points have deposited bonds as security for Treasury deposits the Treasury will forward checks representing the semi-annual interest on them & few days in advance of its becoming due, in order to factiitate the clerical labors of the department as well as to put the banks concerned 4n possession of the interest on the day of its ma- turity. The volume of speculative business in the gold room has been growing of late, and the gross Clearings to-day amounted to $30,502,000, the gold ‘balances to $1,039,483, and the currency balances to $1,554,283, The Sub-Treasury disbursed $47,000 in Payment of interest on the public debt, while the conversions of seven-thirty notes into five-twenty ‘bonds amounted to $1,017,300, There was a spirited debate on the whiskey tax in the House of Repre- sentatives this afternoon, when, by a decisive vote of 87 to 37, the tax was fixed at fifty cents per gallon. The provision in the new tax bill exempting whiskey in bond from the spectal tax of two hundred dollars for the first fifty barrels manufactured in each distillery after the bill goes into operation is an ‘unwise discrimination which calls for amendment. Already whiskey in bond in the Western cities has advanced about niné cents per gallon in consequence, and thus speculators would be the only gainers by ‘the exemption. The special tax ought to apply equally to whiskey in bond as far as it is possible to make it so. Proper amendments are, however, promised to the bill in the House by the Committee of Ways and Means. The stock market was somewhat drooping at one time in the forenoon, but it afterwards became buoyant, and during the remainder of the day it was strong. Although prices are high the speculative feeling of the street 1s very bullish, and their ten- dency tg decidedly upward. Reading continues the most active and buoyant of the rallway shares, and it experienced @ further advance of more than one per cent during the day, sales having been made at 103%. ‘Next in point of buoyancy and activity were the Chicago and. Northwestern atocks which advanced about equally, the preferred selling at 793. Rock Island, after declining to 104%, rose suddenly to 106% without any apparent cause, Pacific Mail was barely steady and but lightly dealt in, while Cleveland and Pittsburg was firm but quiet, Erie remained neglected and experienced ® fractional decline, There is no change to note In the supply of money, which is supera- bundant at 3 a 4 per cent for loans on call, while first clads commercial paper is scarce and in request at5a6% percent. Asthe day upon which the na- tional banks will have to make their next quarterly returns approaches it appears certain that not the slightest monetary disturbance here or elsewhere will be Occasioned thereby, and the money market ‘will remain very easy without doubt until after the month of August, when the usual drain westward will begin to be felt, There -has been @ very strong and active market for government securities all day, and the course of Prices has been upward, particularly for ten-forties, which advanced to 1073 a 107% under large transac- tions, There was also @ good demand for five- twenties of 1865 for export and for the bonds of 1867 for home tavestment. The disposition to employ idle funds in United States stocks of all kinds con- tinues unchanged, and the banks are still free buyers in anticipation of higher prices. The July demand for investment will be likely to maverially affect prices, as the stocks of bonds now held in the street are rather light, and holders are indisposed to sell in view of the probability of a rising market until theend of August. The market closed strong on the street at the follow- ing quotations:—Registered, 1881, 112% a 113; cou- pon, 188, 117% @ 118; 5-20's, registered, 1862, 109% & 110; 5-20'8, coupon, 1962, 113% a 113%; do., 1864, 111% a 111%} do., 1865, 111% a 111%; do., 1865, January ‘and July, 114 a 114%; do., 1867, 114K a 114%; 40., 1868, 11034 a 11034; 10-40’s, registered, 107 @ 107%; 10-40’s, coupon, 107% a 107%; June 7.30's, 110% a 11094; July 7.30’s, 110% @ 110%; August com- pounds, 1865, 11834; September do. do., 118; October do. do., 11734. At the commencement of business the stock mar- ket was dull and steady, and at the early session of the open board Reading sold at 102% and Cleveland and Pittaburg at 91, After the call prices declined \ @ % per cent, and at the first regular board there was no material change. New York Central closed % lower On the call than at the same time yesterday, Cleveiand and Pittsburg %, Fort Wayne %, Mil- ‘waukee and St. Pan! preferred 3, Western Union Telegraph %, and Tennessee sixes, ex-coupon, %; while Keading was \ higher, Northwestern 5, do. preferred %, Pactfic Mail %, and North Carolina sixes, new iasae, 134. The transactions in the State stocks continue above the average, the activity being speculative. Government securities wore strong at an advance of about 4 per cent. At the-open board at one o’clock the market was stronger, and Rock Isiand advanced to 106% and Reading to 1025;. At the second regular board prices continued in the ascendant, especially for Reading and the Northwestern stocks, and on the call New York Central closed % higher than at the first regular board, Reading 1, Michigan Southern %, Cleveland and Pittsburg %, Northwestern 1%, pre- ferred 1%, Pacific Mail 3, Tennessee sixes, ex «oupon, %, and North Carolina %. Government securities were strong at an advance of an eighth for five-twenties and a quarter for ten-forties. At.the open board at half-past three the market continued atrong, and Reading sold at 103%-a 103%, Michigan Southern 91%, North Western preferred 78% and Rock Island 106. During the remainder of the afternoon there was no material change in prices, ‘and atthe close the market was strong at the sub- joined quotations:—New York Central, 184% a 134%; Erle, 605¢ @ 60%; Reading, 103% ® 103%; Michigan Southern, 91% @ 91%; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 90% a 90%; Cleveland and Toledo, 103% a 108%; Rock Island, 106 a 10634; Northwestern, 67% @ 68; do. pre- ferred, 78% & 19; Fort Wayne, 111% a 111%; Ohio and Misatesippl, 30}, a 305; Western Union Telegraph, 36 @ 95%; Pacific Mall, 102} a 102%. ‘The foréign exchange market was strong from the opening to the close, and there were very few com- mercial bills offering. At the same time the demand was neither large nor pressing; butin the absence of @ better supply of bilis rates will doubtless re- main fully up to the spécte shipping point. Bankers’ bills on England at sixty days were quoted at 1108 110)¢; at three days, 110% a 110%; commercial bills, 100% @ 109%; bankers’ bills on Paris at sixty days, 6.15 @ 5.12%.
