These are very showy, ‘these animals. ey belong to a well known poll- lician and millionatre, who never directly offers or accepts a wager. There ts, however, an expression of carnestness in the repose of his face and a stern- ness ip his eye that lead all who observe him to be- lieve that he is in some degree interested in the events of the day. He casually turns his head on one side, meets and recognizes the glance of an acquaintance, then bows, smiles and his anxiety ‘passes away asthe sunbeam illuminates his not dis- agreeable face. A step forward and he gives place to others who unconsciously form a part of this equine panorama, Ob, here is one whose forte is wrestling. A finely built man is he. He is attired in a velveteen jacket. By his side, in an an uncovered gig, harnessed to a Day that likes to have its way on the road, sits a fair and modestly dressed young girl, his daughter doubt- less, while mounted on a pony that keeps ‘well up’? to the roadster is his son, also dressed in a velyeteen One hundred and fifty. Yes, it was e-t-g-h-t-y d-o-l-l-a-r-s. And does any other gentleman desire to see that and go better?” And some adventurous individual did see it, And thus, before the horses were brought to the stand at the commencement of each race, were pools bid up until they amounted to thousands, THE SECOND RACE was handsomely run. The horses did their work nobly and the enthusiasm was intense, albeit several entlemen looked as if they wished they had not been there just then, That race, as, indeed, did all the others, caused a rapid transfer of greenbacks, and there were itching palms and tremulous tngering of the ‘pictures’ as the winners carefully folded them ae and put them out of sight. At three P.M. the bugle called to the track all those who desired to contend for the WESTCHESTER CUP. The programme announced twenty-three entries, but for a variety of reasons only five riders went up to the scales to be welghed. These were Patsy Hen- nessey, for Local; Gilpatrick, for DeCourcey; Charles Miller, for Fanny Cheatham; Charles Leighton, for Onward, and Berry, for James A. Connolly. The Jast named of these —_ to have won the cup, but didn't, for the reason that his trainer was too con- tident, and so Local took it, and a big pool besides. ‘This was an exciting affair, There were two or three false starts, but when the racers finally did get “squarely on their legs’? they rushed over the track like the whirlwind. Cheer upon cheer went vu from thousands of male throats, while hundreds of beautiful women, ‘holding aloft,” like the youth in Longfellow’s “ Excelsior,” their handkerchiefs, their eyes meanwhile scintillating like diamonds, encour- aged the flying coursers “to go it while they were young and handsome,” and their riders to give them @ loose rein, THE SELLING RACE, Previous to the bugle call for the fourth or selling race, the [lee who did “the auctioneering business? became particularly excited, and “ hur- ried up the cakes” of a number of gentlemen who were prepared to ‘dip in.”? The pool in this race, we were informed, ran up to about four thousand dollars, Jubi ridden by Browne, was the favorite. One hard appearing customer, whose face was of the color of mahogany, and who re- minded one about the head of an enormously mag- nified hickory nut, was particularly desirous of going P| when hard pressed—by many be to be due to his not being in proper condition, James A. Con- nolly made a good race, and was only beaten on the homestretch by the superior speed of his adversary, De Coursey ran well for his distance, wluch 1s not far enough yet, The fourth race was a selling arrangement, & dash of a mile and a quarter, with the usual allowances; but as the horses were stinted to one price—$1,000— they each had twelve pounds off thelr usual weight. There were five entries—Urbana, Jubal, Lute, Red- wing and Enchantress. Redwing was the favorite before the horses were brought out, but after their merits were canvassed on the track before the start Jubal rose to equal terms with her, selling at the same rate ($500 each), Urbana $160, Lute $160 and Enchantress $90. Urbana won this race in good time, much to the surprise of the baekers of Ked- wing, who had calculated on her winning almost to acertainty. She ran but indifferently well, Jubal, and Lute both beating her. The fifth race was a mile and an eighth, for three on olds, which brought to the post C. F. Lloyd's lack filly Nemesis, Colonel McDaniel’s chestnnt filly by brother to Frank Allen, Mr. Sanford’s roan colt Hotspur ‘a brother of Asteroid) and Bowle & Hall's bay colt Veley. Nemesis was a great favorite among the pool buyers, selling in one instance for $1,350, the chestnut filly bringing $800, Hotspur $600 and Veley $180. In the pools first sold Hotspur was the fa- vorite, Nemesis won the race with ease apparently, Something, however, took place at the three-quarter pole between the filly and Hotspur, who collided, that was subsequently not fully explained. Both were somewhat injured by the collision, but whether it affected the issue of the race we are unable to say. THE FIRST RACE. The horses were started in front of the bluff, oppo- site the grand stand, and got away on equal terms; but as they spun around to the half-mile pole Inver- cauld took the lead and was one length in front when she suddenly swerved to the right on a bolt and lost four lengths by the operation. She took the extreme outside of the track and was six lengths behind on the lower turn. Coming into the home- stretch she = made a bolt to the right, and be- fore her jockey could straighten her her chances were gone for the race, She ran pretty well up the | stretch, but Rapture, who had been going along steadily, won the race by five lengths in 1:0644.
