The meeting was private. A number of leading Fenians were present. At night alarge mass meeting was held in favor of Irish lib- erty. Speeches were made by General John O'Neill, names in the ward, to form a local Chase organiza- tion, The political experience of these men indicate Chase ag the only man who can be nominated with reasonable hope of beating Grant, and they are not at all reticent in expressing that conviction, Among the men who do the voting this feeling is very strong, an the cry for Chase is, if possible, stilt stronger: In regard to the local magnates the unterrified speak of them as un- Why, aaty on the eyelid ts @ hi times worse man alt the bites of gnats or bedbugs, and I know that Wolcott's Pain Paint will cure a sty in less than one ualified beats—or, in the expressive language of ‘soon be enlivened by revomsion, President of the Fenian Brotherhood; Jos, Gibbons, | concert was brougit to © close by the old favorite, | Benny McGee, “They are all for themscives; why.” | Sie, Still more, Toure op NEW YORK. It won't over intense pathos which Miss Phillips imparted to the first mentioned air, the subdued feeling of grief ex- hibited tn its more melancholy passages, the cadence of her rich and mellow voice, the sympathy with which she entered into its abstract reverie, her inter- pretation of high poetical sentiment—all these points Tose above the mere display of vocal art and reached the it and inspirations of a truly gifted artist. She was eronted with prolonged applause, and bade adieu amid a regular storm of approbation. In the departure of Miss Phillips we are agatn reminded of the contributions to the lyrical treasures which America has furnished to the Old World, not through any failure of appreciation on our part or any lack of musical cultivation, but simply as resulting from unfortunate operatic management here, whether as @ consequence of the interference of stockholders or injudicious direction which has temporarily closed that field for the proper display those talents jiven them under a better system in Europe. We ave, however, but loaned these artists to our older peecliea. ahd may anticipate their return in time to New York city, destined in the future to be the centre of musical art as it will be pre-eminent in other de- partments. Miss Phillips’ reception by the audiences of the Old World will be looked forward to with in- terest by her many friends here, who confidently anticipate for her even greater triumphs than any she has heretofore attained. She leaves to-day for Paris by the steamship St. Laurent. Concert IN Dopwortn HALL.—The first concert of the violoncellist, Mr. César Alard, took place last evening in Dodworth Hall. The room was well filled, but not inconventently—the latter condition of the hall being that which, doubtiess, would mest please the eye and the pocket of the manager. The artists who on this occasion sustained Mr, Alard were Madame Gueretti Alard, Madame Bageard, Mile. Damainville, Mr. Poznoski, the violinist, Mr. B, Massimiliani and Mr. Rosa, the composer and lanist, If approbation be the test of merit; and by repeated encores, taken = a8 the surest guide to the ability of artista, then the artists who appeared with Mr. Alard last night must, according to this standard, be set down as having musical accomplishments of no mean order. This standard is not always @ correct one; butin the potent instance the audience applauded s0 heartily and seemed to be so well pleased with the music that it may fairly be concluded the concert was @ good one. Madame ueretti Alard acquitted herself with much credit. ‘The tone of her voice is sympathetic and tender. Singers who possess this quality of voice will always be successful with audiences who care something for nature and something for art at the same time. Artis always auccessiul when it har- monizes with what is perfectly natural; and a natural note, and not an effort at effect, rendered with an expression of softness and sweetnees, will always fail gratefully, as it ought to do, on the ear of the cultivated listeners, The “Duo on Martha,” for Want toe Dimsel BRED Re Got sel en, OWD | square, New York, as hundreds are doing every day, and you @ quarther of the real estate of the wi and that I swear that it is best thing: ‘and is the way wid all of them. CINCINNATI, June 12, 1868, The politicians have taken the alarm at the Chase movement. A second caucus of the Ohio democratic State delegates to the National Democratic Conven- tion was held yesterday in this city, at which all but four were present. It has transpired that 'a resolu- tion was adopted to cast the vote of the delegation for Pendleton on the first ballot, It is also intimated that the delegation will persist for Pendleton, a great deal of feeling for the nomination of Mr. Chase being manifested. During the caucus the indications were that in the event of the choice of the Chief Justice the Ohio delegation will make some arrangement by which to place Mr. Pendleton in his Cabinet should he be elected, MASSACHUSETTS.
