NEW YORK HERALD, SUNDAY, JUNE 7, 1868.— ‘RIPLE SHEET. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. SaTunpay, June 6—6 P. M. There was considerable speculation for a fall in the gold room to-day, mainly in consequence of the ad- vance in five-twentes on the London Stock Exchange to 13 a 7334, and the fluctuations were from 1393g to 130%, with the closing transactions at 1305, There ‘was an active borrowing demand for coin, and loans were made without interest and at one per cent for carrying and two and three per cent for borrewing until Monday. The gross clearings amounted to $32,728,000, the gold balances to $1,452,546 and the currency balances to $2,261,823, The ship- ments of specie from the port aggregated about $000,000, of which the Borussia took $438,475, the City of Baltimore $423,728-and the France $58,000. The total export of specie and bullion for the week is $3,581,795, The disburse- ments of coin at the Sub-Treasury to-day in payment of interest on the public debt amounted to $116,000, making $666,000 for the week. American silver is quoted at 644 a7 per cent below gold, and Mexican dollars are 10334 a 103% in gold. The Sub-Treasury resumed its conversions of seven-thirty notes into bonds yesterday, and the amount converted was $1,207,550, while to-day the aggregate was $948,300. ‘The railway share market was at intervals excited and irregular and Kock Island experienced a further advance, sales having been made at one time as high as 103% under large transactions. Conflict- ing reports were circulated relative to the setulement, real or proposed, between the committee of stockholders and the present directors of the company. If the facts be as represented in a press despatch from Chicago, published this morning, two if uot three new directors, including Messrs, Apple- ton and Hunt, are to be substituted for an-equal number of the present board, and certain suits against the Tracy pariy are to be withdrawn; but otherwise matters remain as they were before, Mr. ‘Tracy still remaining president of the company. The road isto be built to Council Bluffs, and the pro- ceeds of the forty-nine thousand shares of new stock are to be deyoied to this purpose. Such a settlement as this involves a surrender of all the points originally contested by the stockholders, and would argue hopelessness on their part of being able to accomplish anything of material advantage to themselves. But as the suits proposed to be with- drawn do not include that brought by Mr. Fisk, in which a receiver has already been appointed, it is obvious that the settlement does not extend to this plaintiff, and unless it comprehends all the litiga- tions growing out of the issue of the forty-nine thou- sand shares of new stock, itis hard to see of what relief it can be either to the stockholders or the di- rectors, If the transfer books are brought back to this city the receiver referred to will at once take possession of them, and this one suit covers the whols ground of the case. It is expected thatthe committee of stockholders will return to this city within a few hours, when some definite statement of the negotiations which have taken place ‘Wil probably be made. At present the best informed here are in doubt as to what has actually been done. ‘The business of the Stock Exchange may be said to have terminated after the one o’clock open board, and the lower hall closed at three, under a nefy regu- lation to be observed until the first Saturday in Octo- ber; but a few outside brokers kept'up dealings on the street ina feeble way until an hour after this time. The open board has prohibited its members from dealing at all on Saturdays, within this inter- val, after half-past three, ‘ There has been a firm but dull market for govern- ment securities, which, however, developed an im- proving tendency in the afternoon. There were large purchases of the five-twenties of 1862 and 1865 by the foreign bankers for export, the demand from this source being stimulated by an advance in the former in London to 73 a 73%. The present lull will doubtless soon be followed by renewed activity and higher prices, and nearly all the sales made during the last few days have been Of small lots held by weak parties anxious to realize their profits. Bonds have thus passed sinto stronger hands. At the close the market was strong but quiet at the subjoined quota- tions:—Registered, 1881, 111% a 112; coupon, 1881, 11644 @ 116%; 5-20’s, registered, 1862, 108% a 109; 5-20's, coupon, 1862, 112% @ 112%; do., 1664, 1104 a 11054; do., 1865, 11054 a 11054; do., 1865, January and Tuly, 113 a 11344; do., 1867, 11344 a 113%; 10-40's, registered, 106 a 10634; 10-40’s, coupon, 106 a 10614; June ¥.60's, 10934 a 109%; July 7.80's, 10034 a 100%; August compounds, 1865, 118%; September do., 117%; October do., 117%. Money was offered largely in excess of the demand to the principal dealers in United States stocks and Other first class firms at three per cent, and in some instances balances were loaned - at two per cent, but the general rate on mixed collaterals was four. ‘The statement of the associated banks of this city for fhe week ending to-day shows that they continue to gainiargely in deposits and legal tenders; but the -gain from this source is neutralized by the loss in specie owing to the shipments to Europe which are being made. The deposits have increased $4,342,601, the legal tender notes $3,188,275 and the loans $5,614,877, while the circulation has increased $42,563 and the specie has decreased $3,532,557. The increase in Means mainly reflects the purchases of Dnited States stocks by the banks for the employ- ment of their surplus funds. The totals of the last two statements are as here given:— May 31.
