FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Mowpay, May 2%—6 P. M. ‘The tmprovement manifested in the stock market towards the end of last week made further progress to-day, and the transactions were on a larger scale than they have been for many weeks past, nearly all the speculative railway shares being in good demand, while there was a special movement developed in Pacific Mail, not apparently of a speculative charac- ter, but with a view, it seems, to obtain con- trol of the company. For a week or two past there have beem heavy purchases of the stock by houses supposed to be acting for outside parties, wRo are known to be well in- Sermed upon everything relating to the Pacific Mail @empany as well as the opposition line, and who have doubtless a motive unconnected with Wall street operations for buying the stock. The steady absorption of it which is going on has already re- sulted in an advance of seven per cent from the lowest point touched since the decline following the commencement of the opposition set in, and the steck 1s so scarce and the “short” interest so large that borrowers are unable to get interest allowed upon it, and moreover find it rather dificult to borrow. The parties who are buying for the purpose named are making no transfers at present nto their own names on the books of the company, because their so doing would expose their identity with a movement which they wish to ‘be concealed until their plans are suMciently matured to be made public, when the necessary transfers will be made, ‘The withdrawal of so much stock from the street has been for some days past @ source of great per- plexity to the speculators, all, or nearly all, of whom have been operating for a fall in Pacific Mail since about the date of the last election, and the amount sold, with the hope, on the part of the sellers, of their being able to buy the stock at a lower price, is probably fully equal to the whole capital stock. Pacific Mall to all appear- ances touched ‘hard pan” a few weeks ago, and, although Wall street would sell it down if left to it- self, the indications are that it will have to buy it on ‘the rise in spite of all the adverse speculative infiu- ences that can be brought to bear upon it, Purther developments relating to the scheme now on foot will not unlikely transpire before long, and meanwhile there seems to be nothing but disappointment and certain loss in store for those who have sold Pacific Mail “short.” At the same time the movement promises to result in a great ehange for the better to the company; but it would be premature to indicate details. The railway speculation is promoted and sustained by ‘the cliques, and there is no inducement for the pub- lic to buy any railway stiares on the list at present prices, for although they may go higher they are Uable to a relapse at any time, and the sole object of these combinations is to “milk the street,” or, in other words, fleece outsiders whether the latter buy or sell the things they are able to move up and down like puppets, entirely regardless of real values. Money continues extremely easy, and stock loans ‘were made generally at five percent, although the eading dealers in government securities were enabled to supply themselves fully at four, and even in some cases at three. Exceptional transactions for small amounts on mixed collaterals were made in afew Instances at six, but this rate is now rarely asked. ‘The banks report that their country deposits are still steadily increasing and that the demand from the Stock Exchange is insuMcient to absorb the supply, while, owing to the dulness of trade, the applications for discounts are very light. Hence they are com- pelled to employ a large portion of their surplus in the purehase, from time to time, of United States bonds, which are the only realiy cheap secu- in Wall strect, as prices go, for every way Btog 2] the gf, is selling for more than it is Worth, First class “cominercial paper fs quoted at 53, a6 percent, The conversions “$f seven-thirty notes are going forward very actively, ‘the total to-day at the Sub-Treasury being $3,440,000. The Assistant Treasurer is understood to have neither bought any of these nor to have sold gold, The gold market was strong but quiet, and the fluctuations were limited to one-eighth per cent, mamely, from 1397 to 140, with the closing transac- tions at the latter price. The borrowing demand ‘was moderate and loans were made at 3a 3}, per ecnt per annum for carrying, The gross ciearings imounted to $20,215,000, the gold balances to $1,046,923, and the currency balances to $1,467,214. ‘The foreign imports of specie at the port last week mounted to $233,525, making $3,214,106 since the ist. of January. “there has been a very strong and excited market for government securities all day and a further ad- vance of ahalf per cent in prices was established. ‘There is a brisk foreign demand for ten-forties, which are quoted at about two per cent below the five- Swenties of 1862 in London, and as the loan, which amounts to two hundred millions, is closed the sup- ply is limited, while the bonds are growing in favor abroad, owing to the express stipulation in the au- ‘thorizing act that the principal as well as the interest, 4g payable in gold. It follows that ag they are within two per cent of the 1862 bonds in London they ought to closely approxiinate this point here, and as at Prevent there is a difference of more thau Sve per cent between them the margin for @ rise, supposing five-twentles w remain stationary, is about three per cent. The tendeucy of prices for all kinds of United States stocks is, however, towards considerably higher figures, and ail the material con- ditions affecting them are favorable to this. The home investinent demand is upusually heavy, the purchases on foreign account are larger and more active than they bave been for a long time past, and, at the same time, the glut of money is stimulating speculation in them by parties who have hitherto coufined their attention to railway and other miscel- Janeous shares. At the close the market wus buoy- nt at the following quotations:—Registered, 1881, 115 @ 116%; coupon, 1881, 115% @ 11534; 6-20’s registered, 1862, 107 @ 10744; 620s coupon, 1862, 11036 a 110%; Go., 1864, 108% m 108%; do., 1865, 104% & 109; do., 1865, January and Jaly, 110% a 110%; do., 1867, 110% & 110%; 10-40's registered, 1054 @ 10654; 10-40's cou- Don, 10594 a 1055; June 7.30's, 108% @ 10834; July 7.80's, 10834 @ 10834; August compounds, 1864, 11854; September do., 117%; October do., 117.
