iciastsiettinemen a FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. SuNDay, May 3, 1868, » The gold market was very firm, with a rising ten- dency, during the whole of last week, notwithstand- ing the maturity and partial payment of the May in- ‘terest on the public debt, and the fuctuations were rom 138% to 139%, with the closing transactions to the adjournment of the board yesterday at ree following which, however, there was a decline Bo 139%. The exports of specie from the port aggre- gated $1,431,891, and the customs receipts were 9$2,136,368. Une source of the stubborn firmness of ahe premium is the prospect of a further taflation of #he currency in order to smooth the way to the next Presidential election, and there 1s Mttle doubt that a fresh issue of a hundred millions yf greenbacks will be made, whatever the result of ‘the impeachment trial may be. The radicals are eager for inflation and will make it a party measure, and the democrats are equally anxious to make Political capital by voting for more currency; and ius a compromise will be eifected in Congress on Mthe basis we have mentioned between the ultra in- Mationists of the West who would flood the country ‘with greenbacks und those who are opposed to any further inflation watever. The passage of the Bal- olm resolutions iu the State Assembly last week ‘was one of the siraws which serve to show the irection in which political opinion on the subject of ‘the currency 1s turning, as these request Congress to pass a law authorizing the issue of green- backs suMcient to pay off the national debt, 4@nd both republicans and democrats were included in the majority vote. The natural result of fresh ‘issues of currency will be a revival of trade and Speculation, attended by a rising scale of prices, but the prosperity thus produced under the stimulating ‘and seductive influence of another instalment of ir- redeemable paper will be oniy temporary, and the revulsion which will inevitably succeed it will be ‘violent in proportion to the extent of the previous, Anflation of prices. Meanwhile speculation in Wall sireet will probably be us active as it was in 1863, end an impulse will be given to new entgrprises of ll Kinds. The final crash must not, however, ‘be lost sight of The feeling in the Gold Reom among many of the large operators ts at present rather bearish, and they ‘argue that the premium must decline under the ‘welght of the large interest disbursements of the Treasury, and these certainly have a tendency to depress it, although thus far it has resisted their in- Muence, the underiove of the market being very firm. The money market was easy during the week at 6 @7 percent for demand ioans, the dealers in gov- erament securities and first class stock houses being amply supplied at the iower rate. On Friday and Saturday, however, the’ transactions at seven were more Duimerous than previously, owing to the in- creased demand for moaey resulting from the divi- dend and rent payiients on the 1st of May, and the disbursements of coin by the Treasury. This, however, 1 an important feature, as the drain of curren from the interior is both flarge and increasing in volume, and the Noanable resources of Une banks at this centre are in consequence being rapidly augmented. The state- ment of the associated banks of this city for the ‘Week ending yesterday is unusually favorable to an abundant supply of money and low rates of interest, ‘The deposits show the heavy increase of $10,895,610, the legal tender nutes of $3,996,342, the specie of $1,282,926 and the loans of $5,314,055; while in the cireulation there is a decrease of $112,781. It there- fore appears that the eve of the banks in specie nd iegal tender notes against their $25,320,978 of abilities in deposits aad circulation is $74,030,472, 0,223 in excess of the required limit of twenty-five per cent, which would be $58, 244. ‘The totals of each of the two last statements are as subjoined:— Apru 25, 180,307,430 4h 64,308,757 563,599 The mercantile demand for money is very light and the banks are prepared to discount their cus- tomers’ paper at the lecai rate, while the best grade of commercial paper parses on the strect at 7 a 8 per cent, Notwithstanding the payment of nearly eight millions of the May tuterest by the Sub-Treasury its balance last evening was $101,208,221, and its cur- rency balance 1s suiMoieatiy large to enable tt to con- tinue its purchases of seven-thirty notes, so that its operations will conirjbute to increase the floating supply of money in Wall street rather than the re- verso. We have now reached a point when con- tinuous monetary ease {3 assured, and the indica- ‘tions are that call loaas will soon be made at five per the rates of foreign exchange were kept up to the specie shipping polat during the week, but the demand for bills for reinittance by Saturday's ateamers fell short of the expectations of those who had been previously large buyers on speculation for an advance. It is estimated that fully one-half of the May interest on the public debt drawn on ac- count of bondlokiers residing abroad will be roin- vested in five-twenties, so that the remittances of cash will probably not argregate more than six mil- lions. The supply of cotton bills is light, and the fecelpta at all the ports for the week were leas than 19,000 bales, making 2,065,909 bales since the 1st of September last. The total shipments to foreign ports 4a the same time were 1,460,600 bales, and the at all the porta are 244,500 bales against 450,300 bales at the corresponding date last year. The stock of cotton of all countries at Liverpool on the 15th ult. was 499,370 bales, and at London 53,800 bales, against 795,820 bales and 42,424 bales respectively at the same thine last year. At the close bankers’ bills on England at sixty days ‘were quoted at 110 110%; at three days, 110% a 11034; commercial bills, 109%. Bilis on Paris at sixty days, 5.15 4 5.12)¢; at three days, 5.12% a 5.10, On Boerlin—Bankers’, 72; commercial, 714 a 71%. On Bremen—Bankers’, 79% a 7976; commercial, 78 a 78%. On Frankfort—Dankers’, 41 a 41's; commer- cial, 40% a 407%. On Amsterdam—Bankers’, 41 414; commercial, 407 @ 41. On Hamburg—Bankers’, 36% @ 8674; commercial, 36 a 36%. On Antwerp— Bankers’, 5.15 a 5.15%; commerctal, 6.1734 a 5.15, The stock market was, on the whole, frm during the week, especially for New York Central, and the indications are that the party manipulating this stock and Erie purpose moving them simultaneously against the “shorts.” It is understood that Mr. Drew bought a short time ago seventy-five thonsand shares of Erie from Mr. Vanderbilt at a price agreed ‘upon, and he ia now “long” of this stock, while the latter holds a still larger amount of it. The two, it ts teported, have male an agreement to act together and co-operate with the “pool” in “bulling” this and the other stocks mentione!,and the result remains tobe seen. The market towards the close was ex- tremely dull; but it is so highly cliqued that there is no telling how soon it may become active, the artificial influences controlling it setting at deflance all ordt- fary calculations respecting ita course. The high prices now ourrent and the recent violent fuctua- tions have made the street timid about either buytng or selling, and hence the inactivity referred to; but It ig noticeable that the market ts extremely sensi. tive, and therefore liable to sudden changes. The tomper of the street 1s bullish, and the returning ease in monetary channels gives courage to operators for a rise, while the combinations controlling railway shares have enormous resources at their command. Under such circumstances real values afford no guide to the course of prices, and it is tobe presumed that the latter will, tn the absence of disturbing causes, continue in the sscendant so long as the cliques wish them to tise, and are willing and able to buy the stocks of. fered. The process of “milking the street’ prac- ised by the cliques is, however, calculated to dam- ee the ofdinary business of the*Stock Exchange and narrow the operations of outsiders. At the close the market was dull but steady at the following qhotations:—Pacific Mati, 91% a 91%; Ohio and Mis- sissippl, 31 @ 3144; Canton Company, 6014 a $1; Quick- silver, 2714 4 28; Western Union Telegraph, 37 a 974; New York Central, 1289; a 128%; Erie, 70% 970%; Reading, 89% a 90; Michigan Southern, 82% a 824); Cleveland and Pittsburg, 623g a 8314; Rock Island, 944044; Northwestern preferred, @75M; Fort Wayne, 104 & 104) Govefament securi ies were active and strong throughout, but yesterday thore ayaa a tnil in the speculative movement and prices reacted a fraction rom the previous advance of about one per cent fhe investment demands was auickoned by the dis good demand for the first mortgage bonds of the for United States bonds under the cheap and abun- Total ent’d the port. $55,640,506 $37,217,521 $27,882,201 corresponding periods in 1866 and 1°67 :— January 1 compare as follows :— ‘Thrown on mark demand was modert Superfine Stato and Western... There was also = THE DRY GOODS MARKET. The market for domestic cotton goods has been somewhat irregular, standard mustins, which were fm limited supply, commanding a slight advance, while nearly ail other kinds have ruled in favor of the buyer. The demand has been light all through tho week, and there has been no time since the writing of our last report when purchases could not be made as some concession from the current nominal quota- tions. The prices of most goods are reiatively lower than cotton, notwithstanding the recent mate. rial advance, but present quotations leave a wide margin for profit in many instances, A good Jronoeness of the stock of goods now on hand was fabricated from cotton costing from ve. to 2c. per pond, which at prevailing prices prices would afford a good margin for profit, But tne market is dull at the close of the week and prices are apparently only kept up by the high price of cot- ton, A decline of 2c. a se. per pound in cotton Central and the Union Pacific Railway companies at par. The indications favor a higher range of prices dant supply of money we are likely to experience from this time forward untilautuma, - The duty on foreign grown cotton Imported into the United States ceases on the ist of November next, following which such imporis wiil be free.
