{From the Providence Journal, April 25.) There Was 2 good deal of excitement about olty Friday on the subject of a prise aght during tie forenoon in Warwick, hut dedinite info! tion concerning it was principally confined to the manettieg clams.” It wes yaavn abe leree num- providence le backs other wd eight o'clock, and thay Pi ert Sellers, of viden and Peter English, Baltimore, the ai nist’ of Sam Colyer in his frst prize fight. posse of licemen set out from this city about nine o’clock, with @ po fo rags epg RE oe Th ceedings, but the information in ee to the locatity being somewhat keys not reach the scone till about eleven o'clock. ks of the teams showed that the place selected was the Cowe- Ret Flonae, wehioh ig a. summer resort for clam bakes, &c., kept by Thomas Aldrich, on the beach, between 4 aug and Warwick N some’ distance west “The Buttonwoods.” On arriving the officers. found that the contest had been Sing on for some forty-five minutes In a dance hall in the second story of the building. Serres not observed till they were quite near the ding, when an alarm was ven and the spectators in to scatter, The: e into the room and found that the bruisers finished a. round, and in a state: of exhaustion were. being covered _ with blankets by their seconds, ere were from a hun- o and, ta neal beatae shar aes rd present. The were waist, ‘inelr faces spowrinie foarthl besioes 24 their bodies: covered with blood, which indicated that they had received very seve! unishment. English had a bad bruise under the left eye, which member was swollen to a prodigious size, a cut over the right eye three quarters of an inch in length, a Jaw biden and, the 8! 3 and other wounds which were bleeding P Sellers had a long cut on the back of his Meah being torn by striking the cheekbone of. his an- t. During the ride afterwards both his eves closed and he became stone blind. Sergeant New: hail, seeing Sellers a short distance off, getting out of the second story window, ran around to the outside of she) building and arrened splits He ned stmbea a Wagon, expect apparent! carried off. “Sater Swan atosted’ English in the hall, not far from the They id not have fought much longer, and evidently preferred being arrested to receiving further punishment. The com- pany quietly dispersed without making opposi- tien to the arrests, The prisoners were taken to East Greenwich, where they were arraigned beiore @ oy and committed to jail, each in default of $3,000 bail. Ab expert who witnessed the scene in the hall from the commencement, gives us the following de- talted account. The fighting was for a purse of $200. ‘The men tossed up for corners and English won the toss, Stepping into the middle of the floor, the principais aud seconds shook hands, ‘four across.” The timekeeper called time at seven minates past ten o'clock. There was fifty min- ates hard fighting. At the first round Sellers hit his antagonist “cleverly,” giving him the ih under the left bh and drawing the frst blood. in the next round there were good exchanges, English hav’ the best of it, and giving Bob a “right-hander” on the left side of the head, knoekii him off his pins. A lively rally ensued, in which Sellers was cleverly “back-heeled” In the third round there were good exchanges on both sides, In the fourth Joglish knocked Sellers entirely off his legs. The next was quite closely contested. Sellers poe in a good right-hander, giving English a smash- i blow on the side of the head, following it up with others. The two then came into close quarters, when English rallied. and knocked his an- tagonist over a setice, For the sixth round both came up bleeding, Sellers having one eye nearly closed, The seventh was very ively, and finished by Sellers being again knocked over a form. In the eighth it was found that English had a swelling over his left eye, his lip cut and his phisique generally much the worse for wear. Sellers did not seem to be much hurt except in one eye and upon his Knuckles. The ginth round and the others until the last, resulted in favor of Sellers. English wished to make a “draw” of it three rounds before they stopped fighting, but the other parties would not consent, expressing their readiness to fight all day. Sellers after that went in more iively, eye showing both eyes and lips badiy swolle! the last round they made such eoutest as usted nature would allow; neither Rad rouch bids tr and they leaned over each other, They pummelled each other all about the room until they caine to the stairs, which they came near fall- ing down. They pounded away until neither could strike any longer. ‘The order was then gven by the referee to “draw” them. They were then taken to the setices, when the cry of “Police” was raised, and the parties ran out of doors, If-they had fought another round Sellers would probably have been declared the victor. ‘The rounds each lasted three or four minutes, and the intermissions about one minute. English is a well formed man, short and thick-set, about twenty- six years of age, and weighs about twenty pounds more than his antagonist. Sellers is of a more wiry build. Both were ‘game’? to the back bone, ani fought as persistently as men ever did. Both were tm fair condition, but they had only a fortnight’s training. The contest lasted fifty minutes, "There Was considerable betting on the result. English once went to Selier’s corner and offered to bet him twenty-five to twenty that he would beat him; but Sellers declined, saying that he had no money. After they had fought several rounds there was even money offered on Sellers, Near the close of the battle fifty to ten were offered on Sellers, but no takers were to be found. ‘The Journal comments editorially upon the above a8 follows:— Weare sorry to be compelled to record the fact ‘that one of those disgusting exhibitions of brutality, g prize fight, has occurred on Rhode Island soil; but itis a saiifaction to know that the principals have both been arrested and lodged in jail to answer for their violation of decency and law. We trust that the police have also the names of the two hundred per- sons Who were aiders and abettors in the crime, and that the chief among them, if not all of them, mi share the fate of the poor fools, who, battered out 0} nearly al! semblance of humanity, are hidden from public gaze in the Kent county jail. A Rattling Catch-Weight Mill Near Cincinnati. {From the Cincinnati Commercial, April 24.) The steamboat landing is often the scene of bitter contests between runners for opposition railroads over mgers who, upon landing trom the boats, may be secured for raiiroad business. For over a year past the ranners of the Indianapolis and Cin- cinnati Railroad have in a measure ruled the roost, overshad others in many instances by mere brute force. tly, however, @ disturbing agent bas ap; on the landing, in the shape of a small but who can fight anyt! rough and tumble when necessary, al + weighiee enly one hunttred and forty-nine pounds, and or- dinarily inclined to be very quiet and gentlemanly. This man, Barney Sharkey, is ia the employ of tie Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton Rail and busies imeelf in securing for that line. Not Jong since he was called upon to whip a rival runner ‘who proposed to “run” him off the track, and he did thie very gracefully. Day before yesterday Patsy Moore, a broad shouldered employé of the Indianap- olis and Cincinnati Roiiroad, threatened to throw Sharkey overboard from a steamer. Sharkey imme- diately challenged him to go ovt into the country and fight. Moore accepted it in all the pride of his 206 — and his splendid muscular development. The wo principals took a hack in company with their two seconds, Bill Girty for Moore and Tom Burns for Sharkey, crossed the river to Kentucky, proceeded down to Parior Grove and fought it out, They did not adhere strictly to prize ring rules, They simply stripped to the waist, and went in on their strength and agility, closely watched aud encouraged by their seconds. At the word Moore put in the first blow, a stunning right-hander, on Sharkey’s right cheek, stunning bim for an instant, and bringing him to his knees, In- siantly recovering, Sharkey gave Moore a return ‘biow in the mouth, knocking him down. As he was failing Sharkey caught him a terrible blow in the short ribs, cansing him to vomit. Allowed to regain his fect, Moore made a rattling fight at close quar- ters, but the little man was too scientific for h and he received severe punishment, even at give and take. ‘They tinally closed and went to earth, and had ateach other a terrible punching match, as the; Tolled over and over on the fresh green sward. Al every turn, however, Moore was tne unlucky man. Sharkey had the upper hand. His “wind” was bet- ter than the other’s and he managed to get in more biows, three te one. Finally, aiter they faa pun'sh- ed each other for fully twenty minutes (the seconds veil that it was twenty-six minutes) Moore faintly cried Mean and became senseless. It was at first feared that his injuries were very serious, as he had to be rubbed vigorously before he showed any signs of consciousness whatever, When he did so ne cked up and —— in the hack. The party then returned to this city and Moore was placed in his bed. Sharkey is at work to-day, showing bat few signs of punishment, Lively Mill Between David Powell nad Patsy Shaughnessy Near Chicago, MLN ood the Chicago Times, April 22. Notwithstanding the precautions taken by the police au(horities against prize fighting and the sub. sequent punishment of principais, the amusement occasionally takes place fi the shape of fistie enter. tainments between broad shouldered, pug nosed ath. letes. Such an occurrence took place on Monday imorning at the junction, six miles south of the city, between Davy Powell and Patrick Shanghnessy, two employésof the Bridgeport pohing Mills. Tie fight originated in this manner:—Powell is a big burly Welshman, addicted to ooting off wi his mouth,” and entertaining an inveterate hatred ae lrishmen. This iatter feeling he has repeat- edly exhibited im assertions of his ability to “whip any bloody Irishman in Bridgeport.” Of course such an individual in the Fifth ward was an anomaly, and so thought Pat Shaughnessy, a recent importa- tion from the old country, of a size with Powell, but bot so experienced in fistle essays.
