ENGLAND. The Clerkenwell Explosion Murder Trial The Fenian Prisoners Arraigned at the Old Bailey. Lonpon, April 20, 1863, The trial of the Fenian prisoners—Desmonds, Eng- lish, O'Keefe, Barrett and Ann Justice—who are ac- cused of having caused the Clerkenwell explosion, came on this morning at the Oid Bailey, before Lord Chief Justice Cockburn and Judge Bramwell, of the Court of Queen’s Bench. The prosecution will be conducted by the Aitorney and Solicitor General, assisted"by Mr. Gifford, The following gentlemen will appear for the prisoners:—Messrs. Sleigh and Straight for Timothy Desmonds, Keogh for English, Green for Barrett, M. Williams for O'Keefe and Ann Justice. All the prisoners will be tried together. The jury has been sworn, aid the trial is now (noon) pro- ceeding. The court room and approaches thereto are densely crowded with people, who manifest great interest in the proceedings. Many policemen are present to preserve order, and the authorities have taken other extraordinary precautions, Burke and his fellow prisoners will be tried imme- diately on the conclusion of the trial now proceed- ing, probably on Friday next, The Crown Case and Testimeny. Lonpon, April 20—Evening. ‘The Attorney General opened the case for the prose- cution. He said he expected to prove that the crime of murder had been committed upon the person of & woman, one of the victims of the explosion at the Clerkenwell House of Detention; that the explosion was directly brought about by the prisoners at the bar, four of whom, the testimony would show, were members of a Fenian organization; that the sald explosion was part of a plot to facilitate the es- cape of Burke, a Fenian leader, confined in the said House of Detention; that in the confusion incident to the explosion Burke was to make his escape; that a fund of money was raised at a Fenlan meeting in Holborn to provide for the expenses of the conspiracy; that all the pris- oners in the court were immediately concerned in the atrocious attempt, except perhaps the woman Ann Justice; but that the prisoners Barret and Murphy joined at a late date in the conspiracy; that & man named Falon, who had not yet been arrested, was known to have bought the powder for the use of the conspirators. The Attorney General continued, The execution of the plot was fixed for the 12th of Decemner. Burke was to be warned of the lighting of the fuse outside by a ball which was to be thrown over the wall into the prison yard, where it was expected he would be taking exercise ‘with the other prisoners. But the attempt failed on that day. On the following day the fuse was lighted by Barret himself, and the conspirators succeeded in producing the unfortunate explosion which cansed the murder for which they are now on trial. A short time before this event the‘woman Ann Justice was seen talking with the Desmonds, and she was arrested after the explosion, while fying from the scene, in their company. ‘The learned counsel concluded his speech by announcing that Vaughn and Mullaney, accomplices in the crime, had become Queen's evidence and would give thei stl. mony before the court; but be warned the jury against accepting their evidence as conciusive unless — by the other witnesses produced by the wn. The witnesses for the prosecution were then called, Format testimony was taken as to the nature of the wounds received by the deceased. The informer Mullaney was then called to the wit- ness bar and sworn. He testified that all the male prisoners were regular members of the Fenian or- fasizntion; that Barret was a Fenian Centre; that held went consultations with Marphy, who was an active agent in the affair; that all the ers at the bar were well acquainted with in all its details; and that Bar- Tet had boasted of being the man who had fired the ae, In the course of his testimony the witness to an important letter, writien in “invisi- addressed to Pe we Thompson took the stand and swore said Murphy could not be found, but that the letter en of was from Burke, and contained an to effect his release. DICKENS’ LAST READING, Mr, Charles Dickens! farewell reading in this coun- try was given last night at Steinway Hall before a very large audience, who were most enthusiastic in their recognition of the best points of his portrai- tures, The pieces chosen for the entertainment were “The Christmas Carol’ and the “Bardell Trial,” from Pickwick. In the Carol’ Mr. Dickens was decidedly dull and leasened in his oral description of that very beautiful work the feelings always enter- tained of it. The sentimental portions were rather uneffective and unimpressive, The reading of the “Bardell Trial’? was much more effectiv and perfect, Mrs. Bardell was good and so was the lawyer, but Winkle was decidedly injured, Pickwick played out and poor Sam Weller 40 decidedly killed that old Toney himselfwould not know him. To praise Mr. Dickens would be to speak of the exces; sively good description of Sam Weller in his work; of the peculiarities of that young gentleman, 40 well sustained in the same; of his actions, comicalities and low witticisms, 60 well iljustrated, and all these deserve and merit praise. But Mr. Dickens ruined the character in especial by his readings of it, and not a single @imirer of the loving and loyal Sam could really have been said to recog- nize him last night by Lis creator. Mr. Dickens, like other creators, fulleg in reproducing what his readers have themselves many a time and oft imagined, and, like 80 many Frankensteins, the creators have had reason to feel dissatisfied with their work.
