BOARD OF ALDERMEN. ‘The Widening of Laurens Street. © "Tis Board convened yesterday afternoon in the Bupervisor’s chamber, and, after disposing of a large amount of routine business, received from his Honor the Mayor two communications containing vetoes to the resolutions directing the paving of Lexington avenue, from Twenty-first street to Thirty-fourth street, and Twenty-first street, from Fourth avenue to Firth avenue with the heretofore unheard-of improved ement known as the McGonegal pave- pas ge Bl will cost perhaps - more than $5 the Square) yard, The messages were laid over, as was also resolution received from the Board of Councilmen Betting September 1, 1869, a8 the time for commenc- the work of the extending of Church street. In this connection it may be remarked that the Com- mittee on Street Openings, into whose Morpheus- Mke embrace the resolution of Aiderman Norton ling upon the State Legissare to set aside all e proceedings in favor of this Church street swin- @le) was cominitted, and who were ordered to report en the matter in one week from the time the subject ‘was referred, have not yet seen fit to obey the order of the Board, but keep the matter smothered. Those who will be assessed for the work and ‘who have hoped that they might possibl escape the enormous andunnecessary. tax ai site to carry out this stupendous job will probe. bly learn that people from the other énd of the island who “have no special interest in the matter,” but ‘who will not be called on to pay for it, can force this ‘unwholesome morsel down their throats, alderman HARDY, from the special committee to which was referred the snbject of the widening and extending of Laurens street, asked to have the com- mittee discharged from the ‘further consideration of the matter. The members of the committee had given the matter full and earnest consideration, and had prepared and presented what they considered a just Yeport, and could not consistently make any other. The committee was discharged, and the report of the committee as previously offered was taken up for action and.amended so as to comply with the original request of the property owners on Laurens street, to widen Laurens street twenty-five feet, ex- tend ‘it through to’ Fourth street and oblique): through Washington Parade Ground to connect wit! Fifth avenue. All that portion of the report. in re- gard to prohibiting: the laying of a railroad in the street when improved was stricken out, a8 well as ‘that portion directing the ie rile of-a plaza on the alte of the parade ground east of-Fifth avenue, ‘This was done at the motion of Alderman Hardy, who always speaks intelligibly and to the point. Hestated ‘that the portion of the report which had recommended the cutting away of that, fasshe of the parade ground « east of Fifth avenue did not rightly belong tothe mipicct at present, as it had not been asked for by the titioners; and that as far as placing a bar to the ying of a railroad in the street the Common Coun; ¢ @il was entirely impotent, as that matter would rest © with the State Legislature. When the report as amended was put upon its final passage the gentle- man from “up town,” who has 80 steadily favored | wmnecessary alterations “down town,” moved to amend by striking out the word ‘Laurens’? wherever & $ appeared and inserting the word “Thompson.”” The better sense of the members prevailed, how- ever, and the amendment was lost. The report as gmended was then adopted, thirteen voting in favor go the report and one against it, the unit in this ease being Alderman Coulter who has so many “ietreets opened and regulated, graded, paved and otherwise prepared so as to enhance the value of the adjacent property, and who when the committee . offered their report made the motion to recommit “with the special order in favor of Thompson street. After a little further unimportant business the Board adjourned to meet on Monday at two P. M. THE PARK YESTERDAY. — Hints of Spring Grass and Spring Violets. The concourse at the Park yesterday was rather “wmusual for the season, owing partly to a certain _mailcness of the weather and partly to that general gah tg for sunning ourselves which usually seizes public pulse sometime in April and eventuates in drives into the country and other very natural ab- surdities. In New York this epidemic wreaks itself wpon the drives of the Park—a sort of artificial @ountry, with laws peculiar to itself, administered by officers always on the spot to administer them; with bridges built in delightful imitation of rustic bridges; with lakes almost too exact in wandering to together natural; with trees planted in hedges ‘and ranks like long regiments wearing the green, and not as nature plants, with a view to the utmost confusion; in short, with a landscape which is not a Jandscape, but an exceedingly felicitous hit in Jandscaj;e gardening. The grass, the very first he creep out of its winter lairs and haunts, has it begun to exhibit itself—to transfer an adverb m hearing to seeing—audibly; here and there and everywhere thrusting up through the gray turn of last month little green blades, as if to test the wea- ther before venturing out too far. A week more, and ‘the testing process—the feeling of the weather before venturing up into the sunshine—will have been com- Pileted, and the grass will have carpeted the now Variegated lawns of the Park with its own woven and interlaced greenness. ‘The regulations of the keepers, considering that tet at this time of the year the epidemic to tread reupon and to satisfy oneself that the grass at the Park is tangible and not a mere optical delusion, very thoroughly obeyed and conformed to, ‘here now stand but dry stalk there will be instinc- ive opening of flowers also very soon, and the meral public will be seized with an epidemic to ick them by way of demonstrating their tangibility. e violet wili come first, opening almost miracu- Jousty in a day; and next the grass will be sudden! all sown over with the round, bold discs of the yel- Jow dandelion, as if the sunshine Itself, by some pro- ess familiar only to Dame Earth, had been spun or @ardied and recoined into blossoms of its own exact jor, Daisies and yellow buttercups will follow, And then will come on in ranks and hosts the whole Pparti-colored army of the Park botany, exotic and otherwise, ATTEMPT AT HIGHWAY ROBBERY ON LONG ISLAND. , On last Friday evening, as Mr. Benjamin Mott, farmer, of Far Rockaway, L. I., was riding home in tis wagon, when at the main road Jeading from Mem vad and Jamaica, near Bushville, he was sttacked by three highwaymen, two of whem got i the wagon, while the third one seized the horse, rT.
