NEW ‘YORK HERALD, TUESDAY, APRIL 1, 1868.—TRIPLE SHEET. - 5 . | tae, Doan, of alf-paat three; there FINANCIAL AND. COMMERCIAL Soles was specu- Monpay, April é—e P. M. quotantieles stthobenen tandaer the month of 925,090,260 to $17,742,000, The currency balance fm the Treasury has increased less than a mil- Mom and a half, while the coin has decreased A little more than a million and a half of matured debt -was presented for payment month, and as the five per cent bonds increase of $1,620,050 it 1a to be inferred amount of ten-forties was issued. The loans and replace them @s ‘the legal rate im currency, but these ‘were not generally successful owing to the lim- fited supply of funds at the disposal of lenders. New Joans were made at seven per cent in coin, in some fmstances, early in the day; but afterwards, owing to ‘the limited demand, the result of restricted transac- ‘tlons on the Stock Exchange, this rate in currency ‘wasaccepted. It is easy to see, however, that until the banks are placed in a stronger position than we at present find them to be, by reason of a return fow of deposits from the interior, an enlarged demand for money would result in a corresponding degree of @tringency, and borrowers, foreseeing this, are un- ‘willing to enter upon new engagements before they feel. assured of a moderately ample supply of funds. Although the drain towards this entre has already set in, we shall _ pro- Dably not have an easy money market prior to the middie of the month. The stock market @id not respond to the change for the better referred to, but was heavy and dull all day, while Pacific Mail declined to 9234. The bull cliques supported railway mhares with great determination through the recent mtringency, and a portion of the street was thereby encouraged to do likewise; but the result is not very gratifying to those who bore the burdens. They have carried them through, but there are no fresh Wuyers to take them off their hands, and the load hangs heavily. If left to itself the market would decline rapidly, but there fs no knowing how far artificial influences May continue to sustain it. Erie, in particular, 4s treated with great caution by the street, as in the event of the passage of the bill now pending in the Senate at Albany there would in all probability be a heavy break init. The bill legalizes the contracts made by the Erie Company for the extension of its broad gauge to Chicago, as well as the issue of con- wertible.bonds and stock recently made for the equip- ment and completion of the road, and it prohibits any rector of the Néw York Central, the Hudson River or the Harlem line from becoming a director of the Erie, as well as any consolidation of the latter with ‘any of those companies. The passage of this bill {Would be in accordance with the public interests, “while its defeat would go to strengthen the hands of @ monopoly of the worst kind we have ever been ‘threatened with. The Chamber of Commerce fully weoognized this fact in its recent memorial to the Legislature, and public sentiment outside of Wall street endorses its view of the case. A comparison of the last statement of the banks of this city with that for the week ending on the 7th ‘wt., shows the fotlowring Jmpoenn® meer farcl Dec..* It-will be seen by the foregoing that the loans have ‘been reduced to little more than half the extent of the Geposits in the meantime. If we compare the state- ment of Saturday last with that for the correspond- ing week in 1867 and 1866 respectively we find the following changes, those between the present year ty ee $182,136 8,968,486 ‘The gold market was dull and rather heavy, its extreme range having been from 1383 to 137%, with the closing transactions at the lowest point of the @ay. The abatement of monetary stringency resulted {na reduction of the rates for carrying coin, although it failed to strengthen the premium. Loans were made at ten per cent per annum and 1-32 per @iem during the forenoon, but after the usual borrow- fing hours transactions were reported as low as four per cent in favor of the borrower. The gross clear- ings amounted to $48,290,000, the gold balances to $1,880,342 and the currency balances to $2,536,931. ‘The imports of specie at the port last week amounted to $167,826. The imports of the same in the first three months of the present year were $1,862,225, while the receipts from California @uring the same period were $9,278,352, making 4 total of $11,130,577, and the exports to foreign ports $15,248,562—namely, in January, $7,349,825; in February, $4,203,825, and in March, $3,094,912. The exports, therefore, exceeded the im- ports by $4,117,985. It isa noticeable fact that the tanportations of specie in March were larger than ‘wsual—namely, $1,299,776—and that they were mainly from Europe, $600,000 having been sent from Havre ‘and $547,000 from Southampton. American silver is quoted at 6 a7 per cent below gold, and Mexican dol- Jars at 103 a 10334 in gold. Government securities were strong and in moder- ately good investment demand all day, and a further advance of % a-% per cent was established, although the Sub-Treasury.was not a buyer of seven-thirty notes, With the gradual easing up f the money market governments will doubtless experience a corresponding improvement, as they fre decidedly cheap in comparison with railway and miscellancous stocks. The disbursement of the May interest on the public debt will stimulate the demand for them from investors, and before the end of next month prices will probably be three or four per cent higher. At the close the market was @rong at the subjoingl quotations:—Registered, 1881, 111% @11144; coupon, 1881, 111% a 11144; 5-20's, registered, 1802, 103 @ 10314; 5-20's, coupon, 1862, 11036 & 11094; Ao., 1864, 10834 a 108%; do., 1865, 10855 @ 108%; do., 1865, January and July, 10744 a 107%; do., 1867, 1073 @ 10794; 10-40's, registered, 10134 @ 101%; 10-40's, coupon, 101)¢ @ 10134; June 7.30's, 1061% a 106%; July 7.30’s, 106% a 106%; May compounds, 1964, 1184; August do., 11734; September do., 117; October do., 11614. At the commencement of business the stock mar- ket was dull, with a drooping tendency, and at the early session of the open board Erie sold at 73% a 43% and New York Central at 1233%. At the first regular board the volume of business was light, and prices were without material change, except for Pa- cific Mail, which experienced a further decline to 03%. Michigan Southern closed % higher than at the same time on Saturday, Cleveland and Pittsburg %, Northwestern preferred 5, Ohio and Mississippi 44 and Western Union Telegraph 74, while Erie was % tower, Pacific Mail 5% and Milwaukee and Paul preferred %. Goverament securities were strong at an advance of a 44 per cent. At the open board at ene o'clock the market was quiet and heavy in tone, Erie sold at 7334 and Pacific Mail at933j. At the second regular board ratlway shares were a fraction ower and Pacific Mail declined to 92. New York Central closed % lower than at the first regular board, Erie 3, Cleveland and Toledo ', Rock Island 4%, Milwaukee and St. Paul preferred %, Ohio and Mississippi 14, Pacific Mail 134 and Western Union Telegraph %, while Fort Wayne was % higher and Atlantic Mall Government securities were dull Dut strong, at @ further advance of an eighth. At and Erie sold at 73%; Hud- “gon River, 14034; New York Central, 122%; Rock Island, 953 ® 96%; Northwestern preferred, 15%, and Pacific Mail, 92% a 9234. During the re- mainder of the afternoon the market remained in- active, and at the close shortly before six o'clock the following quotations were current:—New York Central, 122% a 123; Erie, 73% 3 7334; Reading, 91a 915; Michigan Southern, 90.90%; Cleveland and Toledo, 104%{ a 105; Rock Island, 95% a 96; North- ‘western preferred, 75% 9 7574; Pacific Mall, 93% a 9334; Ohio and Mississippi, 31%, and Fort Wayne, 101% a 1013. The foreign exchange market was strong but quiet at the subjoined quotations:—Bankers' bills on England at sixty days, 1094 a 109%; at three days, 1108 1104. Commercial bills, 109% a 109%. A Chicago journal of Saturday thus chronicles an ‘unusually stringent local money market:— The local money market was again close and strin- and some of the banks felt themselves obliged ol in loans to a considerable extent.
