10 ’POLITICAL INTELLIGENCE. THE CONNECTICUT CAMPAIGN. SPECIAL CORRESPONDENCE OF THE HERALD. Politics im the Seventh District—The Fare ragut Sentiment Developing—The Canvass at Its White Heat, NEw Lonpon, March 26, 1868. ‘The first earnest note of the canvass in this district (the Seventh Senatorial) was sounded last evening by the great democratic mass meeting of the season, “More than fifteen hundred persons were present, and the usual campaign enthusiasm was at its white heat. The addresses were made by the Hons, A, 0, Brewster and James Brooks, the burden of the argu- ment being opposition to Congressional reconstruc- ‘tion, and the Presid«ntial imbroglio forming an acces- gory and secondary topic. The movement of Congress against Johnson and the present trial of that func- tionary by the Senate seems to be rather popular than otherwise, especially among the republicans, while ‘the democrats as a majority regard the question with @ sort of sublimity of indifference. The eight-hour ‘question, which was one of the democratic cards of ‘the last campaign, has been circumvented by the Yepublicans rather artfully, by the nomination of a candidate for Governor (Mr. ‘Jewell, of Hartford), tacitly committed to the interest of the Workingmen’s Union; and very little, therefore, is to be expected by the democrats from this issue, so vital to the cam- paign of last spring. +9 A movement counter to the Grant clubs has been Btarted by the democrats, with the baptismal name of the Jackson Society. The organization of some- ing like twenty clubs has already been effected, of which are located in New London, The organization is modeled upon the plan of a secret poco, bound by oath to cer- tain formularies of political significance, the principal of which is sworn adherence to the Constitution of the United States as framed and interpreted by the fathers of the republic; and, though organized too late to elfect a great deal. it is, nevertheless, having its effect upon the campaign. ‘The late editorials in the HERALD suggesting Farra- gut as the democratic candidate for President in op- position to Grant as the republican candidate seem to have set the democratic leaders in this State to thinking, and the inception of a Farragut movement in Connecticut is likely to result. The masses (demo- cratic) have received the proposition with exceeding favor, as I have found from a careful canvass of the question wherever opportunity has been presented; and, in spite of the influence of the copperiiead wing, which is clamorous for Pendleton, if the people have their ry, the Connecticut delegation will re- port to New York on the Fourth of July committed to the nomination of the hero of New Orleans. In the meantime the campaign is being prosecuted with unwonted vigor by the republicans. Hardly a night passes without mass meetings in every dis- ict;_a better class of speakers are being employed than those who figured the campaign last season, and the partisans of Grant are simply deluging the State with greenbacks and national currency. The issue in this State is, in fact, to be simply interpreted ‘as a test of the popularity of General Grant in over- coming republican conservatism and democratic Majorities, and it may be as well to add that, as to the former, the name of Grant has thus far proved a to the uniting and harmonizing of the two Wings of the party. With Grant as their card the radicals have it ail their own way, the conservatives having permitted themselves to be effectually fused for the present into the ranks of their late opponents, The result in New Hampshire has, however, some- what daunted the friends of Grant—the reaction against the democracy not having been as complete as they had expected; and, though fee PATHERDS of the great military leader are putting forth every effort, should the republicans lose Con- necticut on the issue that has been made there is a strong probability that Grant might be shelved by the Connecticut republicans in favor of a more dis- tinctively republican candidate. bis view, there- fore, in Which I but reflect the views of leading re- Roneeans, it is of the utmost importance that this tate should be carried at the coming election, Other- wise, it is likely to be argued, and with some show of justice, that Grant’s military (vanes has been overrated as an effective political element; and other candidates, really more acceptible 40 ew jeaders, are likely to be talked of and canvassed. It may be added here that the democracy are dis- bursing very freely for campaign purposes; and, should the ut movement assume shape in time to form an efficient campaign element, the contest will be between the democracy with Farragut and the republicans with Grant—a contest in which the democrats are sure to win. Miscellaneous Political Movements in Con- , . necticut. General Sickles, Governor Blatr, of Michigan, and General Pleasanton addressed a republican rallying meeting in Bridgeport on the 25th inst. After the meeting the generals were serenaded by Post No. 3, Grand Army of the Republic, and a major general's Balute of thirteen guns fired. Senator Doolittle spoke ‘to the democrats in Bridgeport last night. Agrand republican rallying meeting was held in the Music Hall, New Haven, on the 25th. Addresses ‘were made by gN. D. Sperry, General Burnside, Senator Williams, of Indiana; Major James Haggerty, of New York, and John A. Foote, brother of the late Admiral Foote. General John B. Cochrane spoke in Collinsville on ‘the 25th inst. Mr. Richard O'Gorman addresses the democrats in ‘New Haven to-night. Hon. D. W. Voorhees ts speak- tang nearly every night in some part of the State. The republicans have published a programme already for about a hundred and fifty meetings. The @emocrats present a list of only seventeen thus far. + The democrats in the First Senatorial district have Dominated N. Be Stevens, of Hartford, as their can- aidate, New York Town Elections. The Orange county, N. Y., town elections have transpired. The Board of Supervisors stands eight republicans and thirteen democrats. Last year it stood nine republicans and twelve democrats. The. republicans gain Cornwall and the democrats Wal- ‘kill and the town of New Windsor. Political Events to Occur. CONVENTIONS, March 31—California, Republican, Sacramento. The first regular nomination for the Forty-first Congress was made by the Oregon democrats, March 20, viz., Joseph S, Smith, of Salem; and Oregon ‘will elect the first representative—doubtless to be, ‘98 now, 4 republican—in June. The reformed prac- tice by which, hereafter, each new Congress will ‘meet and organize at the beginning of its term, on the 4th of March, promises the desired uniformity in the election of members without the further interven- tion of Congress in that (behalf. Kentucky, Tennes- see, Maryland, and California have appointed for No- verober their representative elections, which other. ‘wise would not have occurred until the autumn of 1860; and New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Connecticut will dowbtiess follow suit. Thus, of the 193 seats recognized in the House, 126 will be filed simultaneously with the choice of President, and oc- cupants for the remainder will have been already chosen, The Sonthern States, doubtless by that time reconstructed, will swell the November total to 176; but even without.them a greater number of sentatives will be chosen than ever before upon the day of a Presidential election.
