Sy a EE URE aEnEIEE EUR RDUUEEEEENEE wast do., 117 8118; Beptember do., 11634 @ 117; October do., 116 a 116%. ‘The foreign exchange market was quiet and steady FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. ‘WEDNESDAY, March 16—6 P. M. ‘The gold market has been heavy to-day, and the mactuations were from 138% to 18834, with the closing ‘wansactions at 13834 @ 188%. There was @ preasure to Jend coin, and the rates paid for carrying varied from seven te eleven per cent per annum and from 3-82 ta 3-64 per diem. The gross clearings amounted ‘te $66,159,000, the gold balances to $2,174,005 and the eurrency balances to $3,385,625, The steamer Russia took out $121,913 in specie and bullion. The high yates current for carrying gold have caused many of ‘te holders to either reduce their load or sell out, and this has resulted in @ decline in the premium without quickening speculation for a fall, the tone ef Seeling in the room being leas bearish now than it ‘was a week ago, although there is very little disposi- on shown te undertake operations for a rise, ‘The money market was very stringent until after two o'clock, when there was @ sensible abatement of ‘the pressure to borrow from the stockbrokers. Pre- viously from an eighth to three-eightha per cent ommission had been paid as a bonus for loans ‘m many instances, and there was a difference @tone time pf three-eighths between the cash and wegular price of New York Central, while the private ‘bankers were freely offered seven per cent in gold for all they had tolend, The policy of the Treasury fm having increased its balance largely within the Jest week was sharply criticised, and the question ‘was asked why it did not buy seven-thirty notes now ‘tmstead of at some future time, when, the menctary activity having passed away, their price would have advanced. By the payment of requisitions and ether- ‘wise, however, the balance in the Sub-Treasury ‘this evening has been reduced to $101,220,577, er about $4,592,000 leas than at the same time on Tues- \@ey. However much this spasm may have been ag- gravated by artificial causes, it is proper to observe ‘hat the prominent banking house which was report- ed by one of the morning journals to have assisted fm producing it exerted iteelf in the contrary direc- ton yesterday and made considerable loans after three o'clock, so that the charge is without founda- tion in fact. The iegitimate inquiry for money is un- doubtedly much more active than it has been for wearly-six months past. The opening of naviga- don is quickening the demand for currency 4m the interior, while the near approach of the first of April, which is both “settling day” in several States and the time for making up the quarterly statements of the national banks, leads to a wider distribution ef the circulating medium than usual. A special eause for the prevailing activity is also to be found %m the recent withdrawal from the banks of this city ef the proceeds of the sale of the ten millions of new Erie stock thrown upon the market at the begin- ming of last week, and the steady decrease @f the bank deposits and legal tender reserve at this entre for two months past showed that the money market here was becoming sensitive to adverse in- Muences, and therefore lable to sudden derange- ment. Discounts, as may be supposed, are with aificulty obtained, and the best grade of paper is nominally rated at 8 a 9 per cent on the street. ‘The “stock market felt the effect of the peculiar eendition of monetary affairs early in the @ay, and New York Central declined to uuix, while- Erie sold at 66%, but mot ‘wihstanding the reluctance of the banks to cer- tify their customers’ checks to any buta very limited amount beyond the balance in hand withont a pledge of collaterals and the impossibility of borrowing from the banks on Erie except when mixed with ther and better securities, the entire railway share Mst advanced from one to three per cent, the sharp- est rally having been in Erie and New York Central. Tewards the close, however, it began to react @ownward, and the oificial intimation that the tari of the Erie Company had been reduced one- ‘third, to take effect to-morrow, acted as a damper upon the bull movement. This change involves a re- duction of the fare from New York to Builalo of $3—namely, from ten to seven. The Vanderbilt party showed great determination and considerable mrencth in their dealings in Erie and New York Cen- ‘tzai, which took the street somewhat by surprise; but tm view of the prospect of a rather active seven per cemt money market until about the middie of April it is not probable that much improvement ‘will be witnessed, while, as the market is liable to become further weakened and demoralized at any time, there is no inducement for the outside public to venture into Wall street. The general market is M&ely to be unsettled by the ceurse of Erie for some time to come, and there is good reason to suppose ‘that the contest now going forward will prove dam- aging both to the intrinsic value and the market price ef that stock. Rumors of a probable compromise be- ‘tween the contending parties were circulated this afternoon, but these are unfounded. At the commencement of business the stock mar- et was weak and New York Central declined to 117% and Erie to 66%. At the early seasion of the open beard the tendency was towards improvement, and Erie soid at 67a 67}¢ and New York Central at 27% 4118. Atthe first regular board railway shares continued to advance, notwithstanding there was ‘considerable pressure to sell for cash in consequence of the stringency in the money market. New York Central was particularly active, but there was only a mrederate business transacted in other stocks. New York Central closed 3% lower than at the same time yesterday, Reading %, Cleveland and Pittsburg %, Cleveland and Toledo %, Fort Wayne %, Toledo and ‘Wabash 2%, Milwaukee and St. Paul preferred \, Pacific Mail 3, Atiantic Mail 1, Canton Company 1, Western Union Telegraph %; while Erle was % higher, Northwestern preferred %, Milwaukee and &. Paul %. Government securities were weak, ‘owing to the sharp demand for money, and the gold Bearing stocks showed a decline of % a %, while @even-thirty notes were % lower. Tennessee sixes, new, and Miasquri sixes were % lower. At the open Deard at one o lock the market was strong and Erie @oki at 63 @ 6%}; and New York Central at 118 a 498%, At the sevond regular board, Erie having pre- viously sold at 6%, prices showed further material im- Provement, espedially in New York Central. New York Central closail 2X higher than at the first regu- Jar board, Erie 1, Hudson river 2, Reading 4, Michi- gan Southern 34, Cleveland and Pittsburg 4, Cleve- Jand and Toledo 1, Ruck Island %, Northwestern pre- ferred \, Fort Wayme %, Toledo and Wabash %, Milwaukee and St. Paw! preferred %, Ohio and Mis- aissippi 4, Pacific Mai! %, Atlantic Mail 1%. Gov- ernment securities were\ heavy at a further decline of 4%. Missouri sixes were X lower. Mr. Charles A. Jounes, with Messrs), Henry Clews & Co., was elected a member of the\ regular Stock Exchange. After the call Erie advanct;d to 6934, and at the open board at half-past three Erte sold at 69% 9.60%, New York Central, 120% @ 120%; Reading, 92%; Rock Inland, 93%; Michigan Southi:rn, 88%; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 904 a 904; Northwestern preferred, 7334 #75)4, and Fort Wayne, 10134. During the remain- Ger of the afternoon the marké't Was dull and rather Grooping, aud at the close at a\(x o'clock the quota- téons were as subjoined:--New\ York Central, 120; Erie, 60; Reading, 92% ao 923; \\{ichigan Southern, 964, a 88%; Cleveland and Pittabui"g, 89% @ 90; Rock Island, 93 a 93}¢; Northwestern \preferred, 73 @ 43%; Fort Wayne, 100% a 1004. The following 1s a comparison of fie prices of the Beading railway shares at the first reg ular board this morning and at the same time «)n the corre- @ponding date last month:— Feb. 18, Marci 18, Lower, New York Central. 1S 6 118 1534 + 78M OiNC 1055 preferred. + BOG 76 56 udson River. 148 134 4 oe + 04% 92 2% ichigan . 926 88 4% Cleveland and Pilteburg.. 98 89% Be Hleveland and Toledo. . ae 103 Oi k Island 92% 5h rt Wayne. 101 % Government securities continued weak, owing t° the prevailing monetary stringency, and prices ex- perienced a further fractional decline; but late in the afternoon there was considerable improvement fm the tone of the market, owing mainly toa partual @batement of the pressure for money and the an- mouncement that the Sub-Treasury had reduced its balance about five millions to-day by cash disburse- ‘menta.
