FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL’ Monpay, March 16—6 P. M. ‘The gold market was unsettled, but, on the whole, ‘frm to-day, and the fluctuations were from 139% to 390%, with the closing transactions at 139%. There ‘was a good borrowing demand for coin, and loans ‘were made at rates varying from four to six per eent. The gross clearings amounted to $62,112,000, fhe gold balances to. $1,842,940, and the currency balances to $2,735,459, The weak and excited condl- ton of the stock market dwarfed interest in gold, but fhe advance im the rates of foreign cxchango ‘bad a tendency to impart strength to the premium, ‘Phe fact that Mr. Ingersoll’s resolution in the House of Representatives, providing for an increase of Segaltender circulation to the amount of the green- ‘back contraction, was virtually killed by being re- erred to the Committee of Ways and Means by a ‘vote ef ninety to fifty-eight, shows that the majority, @m this branch of Congress at least, are opposed to ‘@afiation, and this is a good sign for the future. The eountry requires neither expansion nor contraction. ‘The stock marget has been in a whirl of excite- ‘ment all day, and Erie is still its absorbing feature. ‘The fluctuations in the stock were from 73% to 6614, ‘and, despite heavy purchases by brokers supposed to ‘be acting for the bull clique, the decline made steady progress? It is therefore to be presumed that the nll party is powerless to support it, and, this being the case, it 1s difficult to say how low the stock may not fall. The hun- @re@ thousand shares of mew stock sold ast Monday is so much added to the weight which the combination in question before undertook to carry. Much of this stock was bought by it above 80, and the Joss in which it is already involved probably agecregates more than a million and a half of dollars. ‘Mhe'side pool, which was formed to co-operate with ™, has sold out at @ heavy sacrifice, and many ef those who bought largely when the Van- @erbilt movement became a matter of street motoriety have found themselves compelled to part with their stock under similar circumstances. In connection with it and the general market the failure ‘@f three broker firms was reported this afternoon, two of whom belonged to the regular board and one to the open board. One was identified with the Atlantic Mail interest and another with Canton, and both proved millstones round thelr necks. By the reverses which the Vanderbilt party has sustained in this campaign its leader has undoubtedly lost much of his prestige, and there is no knowing how much his capital may ‘ee ultimately involved in it. Moreover, the public has no sympathy with a movement designed to e@ecure a monopoly of the leading railways centring at this point, and it would have been better if the eontroliing spirit of the New York Central, the Hud- fon River and the Harlem lines had contented him- elf with their successful management, instead ef thus attempting to control the Erie as well. As a Wall street operation this so ealled Vanderbilt movement has turned out @isastrously, and it has not only demoralized the bulls in Erie, but the bulls in all the other railway shares, and the desire to sell among holders of stocks bas rarely been more general. The litigation be- ‘tween the eontending parties was further compli- cated this morning by the issue of an injunction by Judze Clerke, of the Supreme Court, of this city, staying all proceedings on the entry of the erder appointing the receiver for the proceeds ef the sate of the ten millions of new stock, and preventing the receiver from acting until such time as a motion can be heard on the first Mon- @ay of April. This is in direct opposition to the action of Judge Barnard on Saturday last, and gives @ new turn to the proceedings in favor of the Erie party. The general public as well as the street nat- wrally regards the stock with great distrust in view @f this litigious siruggie and ita uncertain results, and both will do'well to leave it severely alone. The bears predict that it will sell below fifty within avery few weeks, while the bulls venture no predictions with regard to it, although a few are disposed to be- Meve that it has touched bottom. The banks are re- Jactant to lend upon it except in smaii amounts, with @ wide margin, as they fear further issues of new stock, there being no limit to the amount to which the company can Issue convertible bonds, and conse- quently new stock, under the provisions of the matute. The money market was moderately active at seven per cent for call loans, below which rate there were mo exceptional transactions, even on governinent securitics, Some surprise is expressed that the Treasury does not purchase seven-thirty notes in erder to release a portion of ita die currency balance, the more especially as they are considerably lower in price than when the government made its last pur- @hases. The amount of money locked up in the ‘vaults of the Sub-Treasury would be of public service W disbursed, whereas it now merely tends to aggra- vVate the preva‘ling monetary activity. ‘The statements of the associated city banks for the ast two weeks include the following totals:— March 7. THE CAMPAIGN IN CONNECTICUT. Election April 6. Since the close of the canvass in New Hampshire a number of the speakers have gone to Connecticut, and the campaign there may be said to have now fully commenced. The principal republican speak- ers already entered for the contest are the Hon. Henry Wilson, Hon. James Harlan, ex-Governor Hawley, J. W. Bear (the “Buckeye Blacksmith”), Hon. Henry B. Harrison, General W. H. Gibson (the “Ohio Rattler”), Governor Harriman, of New Hamp- shire; Professor Cyrus Northrop and others, At a recent republican meeting in New Haven General Hawley paid the following handsome and manly tribute to the republican candidate for Governor, Marshall Jewell:— I stand for Mr. Jewell with all my heart. Mr. ee isevery inch aman. He staried in life a poor boy. He has fought his way up to wealth and honor like @ hero, He has the heart of alion. He isa tower of strength. His broad, generous nature knows no limits. His hand helps on the si oung business man. His great, broad shoulders have carried immense burdens. His vei resence brings life and stirs up boundless enthi m. He was not nominated for his money. He will not stand as a party to corrupt electioneering schemes. He is a more popular candidate than I was. Iam sorry I lost votes for the party. But my conscience is clear; I did my best. But here is a man whom all republicans will vote for. ‘The democrats have started off witha good dash from Senator Doolittle, who will be followed by a number of popular speakers, most of them used to the winning side. The tickets are as followa:— Republican, Democratic, larshall Jewell. James E. En; a Ephraim Hi, Leverett Pease. Edward 8. ‘Mosely. Gomptroliiy James W. Manning. Jesse Onley. Last spring the democrats elected their Governor by 987 majority, while in 1866 the republicans were successful by 531 majority. i] MARRIAGES AND DEATHS. Married.
