FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, Tuespay, March 8—6 P. M, ‘The gold market bas been steady but dull to-day, and tho fluctuations were from 140% to 14134, with the losing transactions at 14134. The disbursements of the Bab.Treasury in payment of the March interest on the ten-forty loan are increasing the floating supply of coin, and loans were made at rates varying from five to seven per cent for carrying. The gross clearings amounted to $43,188,000, the gold balances to $1,192,801 and the currency balances to $1,683,038, Speculation both for @ rise and a fall is at present very languid, and the im- peachment question no longer exorts a disturbing ‘nfuence upom the premium, while even the lying «tongues of the Washington rumor mon- gers are mient, and the newspaper correspondents at the capital have ceased for the time boing to manu- facture reports calculated to produce speculative fluc. fwations, The Sherman funding bill is rogarded as a ‘thing already dead, and it is more than likely that there ‘will be no financial legisiation during the present Con- gress which will in apy way shake the public credit or edvance the price of gold. There was a brisk demand for money from the Stock Bxobange, which was met mainly at six per cont, with exceptional transactions at five per cent on governments and at seven percent on miscellaneous collaterals. In ‘the discount line there is no noticeable change, and firet lass commercial paper passes at soven per cent, ‘and in some instances at 3 @ 1 per cent below ‘this rate, On the Stock Exchange tne main feature of interest was a sudden reversal of tbe recent course of Bne, the latest quotation for which on the street was 74% a 7434, against 66% at the close ast evening. This ‘advance of nearly eight per cent In one day very natu- rally took the street by surprise, and there were various conjectures as to the cause, one theory being that the speculative director had changed his tactics without Botice to his friends for the purpose of twisting the “sbort” interest, and another that Mr, Vanderbilt had come to the rescue of those who were “long” of the stock at high figures, It was at the same time rumored that the contract for the consolidation of earnings between the Erie, the New York Central and the Pennsylvania Central would be signed this week, and that the Erie would be greatly benefited by ‘thie arrangement; but this was afterwards contradicted, and whether the assertion or the contradiction had most tratb ip it remains to be seen, So far as the story rep- resenting Mr. Vanderbilt as a buyer of Erie 18 concerned there 1s in all probability no foundation for it in fact; Dut that a “pool’’ was formed which inc'uded most of ‘the old William street party there is no doubt, and this combination has been actively at work buying the stock all = day. Some say that they know that the speculative director Is In it, while others Delieve that he is heavily ‘short,” and that the control of the stock has been wrested from his heads, It is immaterial, howe which view of the case iscorrect, The street has been swindled again; Dut this time on the bull instead of tho bear tack. the Erie was a woll managed property its stock would be worth par; but as it is it ts tho football of Wall street, and those who either buy or sell it might as well ‘Det ona throw of dice. How much higher the present Dail party will carry it is uncertain; but that it is liable toa violent break at any moment is obvious, Mean- while the large ‘short’ interest in it 1s a source of strength, and the bears are more timid ip rushing to ‘cover’ than the bulls are in rusting to sell when the market goes against them. Yesterday the feeiing of tho street with respect to Erie was extremely bear- isb, and a considerable further decline Im its price waa Predicted; but to-day the revulsion of fecling produced ‘by the sudden turn has led to predictions of an exactly op- Posite characier. Our advice to the public under the cirs Cumstances js to believe neither the buiis nor the bears, aud to leave Erie to the brokers and other professional Speculators who have nothing better to do than to play pitch and toss with it, entirely regardless of its reas value, The rest of the market was drm, but compara- Uvely neglected, tte enormous transactions in Erie having dwarfed interost in tbo other speculative stocks, There was a rathor active specuative and investment demand for government securities during the early part of the day, and prices advanced \ a % por cent upon ‘he closing quotations of yesterday; but in the after- moon there was a fractional relapee, although the tone of ‘the market was steady, The receut dechine, based upon ‘the Bherman funding bill, has brought in large buyers, as it is very evident that the moasure in question will fail to pass either house, even if it is pressed to a vote, while the steadiness of the gold premium shows that ‘there is no real distrust: of the public credit felt. At the close the market was steady at the sunjoined quota- tions :—Rogistered, 1881, 110% a 111; coupon, 1881, 111 a 1114 ; 6 20's, reg'stered, 1862, 108.55 a 10676 ; 5.20’s, coupon, 1862, 110% a 1103¢; do., 1864, 107%, a 10814 1865, 1037, a 109; do., 1865, January and July, 106% a 107; do, 1867, 107 a 10714; 10 40's, registered, 101 a 10-40's, coupon, 1011; a 1013 ; June 7.20", 1057% July 7.30°s, 105% 2 106%; May compounds, 1964, 117%; a 115%; Angust do., 116% 9 117%; Septem- ber do., 11614 a 116%; Octobor do., 116 a 116%. At the commencement of business the stock market ‘was sirong, and at ibe early session of the open board Erie advanced to 67% a 68's and Northwestern to 65},. At the first reguiar board the market was buoyant, ee pecially for Erie, which was active and cloved 324 higher ‘*ban at the same time yesterday, New York tral 13, Cleveland and Toledo 4, Fort Wayne 34, Milwaukeo and Bt Pan! 4, Obio and Mississippi 4%, Western Union Triegrapn %, North Carofina sixes 11%. Pacific Mail was \{ lower, Government securities were strong at an advance of a % percent. After the call Erie rose to TAX, and at the open board at one o'clock it sold at 6924 2 697{, while the remainder of the railway het was wteady. At the second regular board Erie was strong aud excited and closed 11, i cher than at the fret regu- Jar board, but in the other speculative stocks there were only fractional changea Government sccurities ‘wero steady at a decline of one-eighth per cent from the highest prices of the day. After tne catl Erie was actively bid up, and at the open board at half-past three ft sold at 719; a 71)¢, while the reat of the market was firm, New York Central selling m at 120%; North. westorn at 654; 2 66%; Michigan Southern at 90% a 91; Dorthwertorn preferred, 74% a 14%; Geveland and Pips arg, 94°5; Westers Union Tels. graph, 3434, and Pacific Mal, 110%. Afterwards sales et Erie were made as high as 74, and there was great excitement in the dealings. At the close at #ix o'clock the quotations were as follows:—New York Central, 199%; 41297; Erie, 737% = 74; Rending, 04% 094%; Michigan Southern, G13¢ a 91%; Cleveland and Pits. burg, 04 a 0434; Cleveland and Toledo, 107 a 107); Rock Island, 964% a 97; thwestern, 657% = 60% Northwestern preterred, a 74%; Fort Wayne, 100% 0 100%: Pacific Mail, 11034 a 111; Weatern Caioa Telegraph, 2434 u 2434. ‘The foraign oxchang® market wan dull, and while ster. ling rates were barely steady there was some weakness sbown in those on Continental cities, The receipts for customs and the receipts, payments and balances at the Sub-Treasury m this city for the expired portion of the week have been as follows: — Oustom Howse, ———-—Su- Preasury. REAL ESTATE MATTERS. Heavy Sates Yeaterday—Central Park and Prespect Park Lots—Brooklya Real Estate— Condition of the Market After a three days’ rest real estate operations yester- day resumed the activity which has been the marked feature of the market since the sexsson of 1868 opened, and the auction mart, which had in the Interim been silent ana unpeopled, became again the muster ground of owners, holders, speculators and agents, and ro- sounded with the familar voices of auctioneers raised in highest tomes, crying ‘Going, going, positively for ‘vhe last.time, gone.’ It is an interesting study, and would furnish material fora most instructive chapter if this report bad anything to do with sach distinc. tions, to watch the different classes who congregate there, according as the occasion is of the gale of Boule- vard or Central Park lots er property on James or Cherry street, a brown stone mansion {n Madison ave. nue or tenement property in Orchard street, fashionably located sites for private dwollings or a good business mand. Of course when all these are'to be sold on one dev, as is often the case, the congregation is motley, but as each particular lot is offered tbe class most inter. ested im Sts purchase seems to come uppermost, as it were, from the crowd, 4 appears for the time to constitute the only audience, subsiding and giving pince to another class with the succeeding sale. She regular habitaés can be known by the eager way in which they press forward, obtain maps, secure salient points of observation and carefally note each purchase, There is not much to be said concerning real estate in a general way except that it is in steady, firm demand; ‘and respecting prices there !# no other data on which to found a judgment than the reported sales of the season. Much saterest is felt in the sales announced for next week, two of which, the jarcest this season, are set down for one day sod promise to make ft excep. busy, Thess ore the executors’ sa’ Taiman estate, by A. J. Bleeek of 246 lots in the immediate neighborhood of Central Park, and the sale by Jobnson & Miller of over 200 tots ‘adjacent to Prospect. Park and bordermg on the pro- posed drives comprised in the plan of that work. Both sales now, to some extent, control the market. as the prices obtained for those lots will determine the value of other lots similarly sitasiod.
