Havana, Feb. 7, 1868, The steamer Marsella, Captain Gari, haa arrived ‘here from Vera Cruz with advices to the 2d inst. The Mexican government had been forewarned of an intended pronunciamiento in favor,of Santa Anna by the garrison of Vera Cruz. Troops, how- ever, were sent down from Tehuacan, General Porfirio Diaz's headquarters, who arrested some non-commissioned officers and'the ringleaders of the movement. The affair had been hushed ap, andthe journals of Vera Cruz remained silent about the matter, The excitement was all over when the steamer left. The steamer Tabasco, of General Alatorre’s ex- pedition to Yucatan, was expected at Vera Crus. ‘The steamer Marsella left Sisal on-the 5th inst. General Alatorre’s forces attacked the rebels mear Merida and defeated them. They had to re- ‘reat toward the interior, and General Alatorre entered the capital of the State, Merida. On the Gth inst. everything was very quiet at Bisal. ‘Colonel Villafana, commander of the rebels, was Killed and the remainder of the rebel leaders escaped by sea. Havana, Feb. 7, 1868, The action between General Alltorre’s forces and the Yucatan rebels ander Colonel Villafafia took place at Maxcanie, a town of about five ‘thousand inhabitants, in the district of Merida, ‘The battle was fought on Saturday, February cc ‘The rebel Colonel Villafafia was killed, as Generals Parra and Cepeda, of the national teisea, ‘The latter was brother to the Governor of Yucatan, The rebel Governor Canton abandoned the capi- tal, Merida, on Sunday, 2d inst., and fell back with his remaining adherents and their ammunition to Peto, a town of the interior in the district of “‘Tekax, containing about five thousand {n- habitants. It is a good strategic point. Before the rebels left Merida they en- forced heavy loans in Sisal and seized a Mexican brig, the Oriente, on board of which some of the leaders are supposed to have sailed for Cuba or some point along the coast to unite with the fugitives who fled to the interior. On Monday, 3d inst., General Alatorre was to enter the capital of Yucatan with his forces and replace Manuel Cepeda Peraza in the gubernatorial chair. The rebels were disposed to submit to General Diaz. Colonel Villafana’s aid, oamed Mendez, another officer. named Caideron and fifteen rebel prisoners were ordered to be shot, The English steam sloop-of-war Cordelia had arrived at Sacrificios island, off Vera Crus, and reported that a lot of pirates under one’ Hernandez had surprised Carmen island, and had taken away all the military and government stores. He in. tended to sail for Tabasco to depose the Governor. ‘There were false Maximilian dollars in circulation throughout Mexico. Palacios had proclaimed himself Military Governor and | recognized by about two-thirds of the State. He was raising troops for self-defence against Governor Rabi, who had marched againsthim, In one engagement Rabi's forces were victorious and succeeded in capturing ® number of prisoners and cannon. General Corona, in concert with Governor dela ‘Vega, of Colima, had made @ military movement to put down the insurreotion. Colouel Borrega ‘was put upon his trial for insurrection, A conflict had taken place at the capital be- tween the police and some military, in which four colonels of the latter were wounded, The affair was put down by the authorities, Stage robberies were of daily occurrence, Madame Juarez was fined because her oarriage had no lights at night while traversing the etreets of the capital. The British steamer Eider had bad a narrow escape from shipwreck. On landing her mails the boats were almost swamped and the mail bags were completely drenched. It was reported that Gene- eral Escobedo, tm his conferences with Minister Lerdo de Tejada, had offered to resign his com: mand of the Third military division, There were rumors that the Ministry of War had been offered 0 General Diaz. The result of the election for Governor in the Btate of Puebla was that a new rebellion was likely to break out in the Siewa, The disturbances were very violent in the mountains thereabouts. The troubles in Guerrero, Jalisco, Durango and San Luis may cause a general struggle in Mexico. A railroad project to unite the capital of Mexico with the United States, by line along the Gulf coast, had been referred to # committee of Con- gress. The Spanish steamer Marselia arrived to-day from Vera Cruz, The revolution in Yucatan against the Mexican gov- ernment has been suppressed, General Alatorre, the commander of the Mexican expedition, was tm posses- sion of Sisal and Mérida, A battle was fought on the 2d inst. at Mérida between the government troops and the revolutioniets, in which the latter were utterly Gefeated, Vilifafia, the revolutionary leaden, was Killed, and at the end of the engagement most of his adherents surrendered, though small parties gueceeded in making their escape to the mountains.
