rete FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Fainar, Jan. 31~6 P, M. ‘The gold marke! has been quiet to-day and the fluciu- ‘Qtions wore from 14044 to 140)¢, with the closing trang- mctionsat 1403¢. The deciine in the forenoon bad the ‘e@eot of stimulating the demand for fore‘zn exchange, ‘whieh reacted upon the premium, and hence the re- overy, The largest holders of coin are the English and ‘Germaa bankers, and the ‘short’ interest outstanding ‘wemains light, in consequence of the prevailing impres- fuion that the tendency of tho price of gold n greenback ‘ upward, owing mainly (o the disastrous reconstruction (policy of Gongrees, Cash gold is therefore abundant, vand loans wero made at rates varying from ‘three’ to seven per cent for carrying, The gross clearings amounted to $38,748,000, the gold ‘Dalances to $1,951,774, and the currency balances to 92,785,142, It was known late in the afternoon that ‘he House of Representatives had agroed by « vote of 204 to 43 to the report of the conference committee on ‘the bill repealing the tax on cotton grown after 1867 and exempting foreign cotton from import duty after the first of November next, but the news exerted no ‘perceptible influence upon the transactions, This measure was imperatively demanded on the score of Public necessity in the south, and even with she repeal ofthe tax it is doubtful whether the next crop will be ‘as large as the last one, for the poverty of planters and ‘the-demoralization of the labor system are stumbling ‘blocks the way of cotton culture hard to be over- Come é the face of the active competition of other Countries in the cotton markets of the world. ‘The uaprincipled speculators and their emissaries who @ been circulating false reports during the last few days, in order to depress tho stock market, revamped their story about a now issue of Erie stock this morning by saying that the Erie Company was about to capitalize ite leases, This absurdity sufficed to make some per- sons set! out, and the stock at one time declined to 735. Atis trae that by a law passed by the last Legislature apy railway compatiy in this State may capitalize its Jeases, but the Erie Company pays seven per cent per snnum upon these, and what sane man would convert @ seven per cent socurity into a non-dividend paying one at 74%, The New York Central Company capitalized its Athens branch lease last year, but the Yate of interest in that cuse was only six per cent and ‘he stook was seliing at 103 a 104 when the capital ‘tion took place. Had the stock been selling below par those who were receiving six per cent under the lease ‘would not have entered into the arrangement. If, however, the Erie Company could capitalize its leases, amounting im all to about ten millions, it would bea ‘very good thing for the stockholders, as it weuld save ‘the company the $700,000 a year which it bas now to pay on account of these; but it fs very obvious that there is no possibility of this ebange boing made while Erie common stock remains “Below par and pays no dividend, If New York Central had torsell above par before its six per cent leases were capitalized it is evident that a stil! greater inducement ‘would be necessary to the capitalization of the seve! por cent leases of the Erie Company, But of course those who concocted this report knew that it was with. out foundation in fact. Their only object was to alarm timid holders of the stock and make them soli out, in order that they might buy at the decline, Preparatory to « fresh upward movement, The Speculative directors make it their business to ewindle the street by misrepresentation, and such men are a disgrace to the management of any corporation. ‘They use their office to its detrimont aud their own Personal gain, and make a habit of iving in order that! hey may stea) from the pockets of the pub: ‘the @tock market became firmer as the day advanced, while tho efforts to depress Erie seemed to have spent their force, and a genera! recovery of prices took jlace. Rock Teland was particularly strong, and it is easy to see that im tho event of the Supreme Court declaring the issue of tho $4 900,000 of new stock illegal thére, would be a demand for that amount of old stock to replace {t pre!imipary to the final disposition of the proceeds of tie sale by the under tho managemont ofa receiver. The natural te acy of prices on tho Stock Exchange is upward, and this 1 strengthened by the growing plethora of money. Loans are made at four por cent on govern- ments and four and five miacellaneous collaterals, ‘while Grst clags commercial paper ts in-demand at Sig a ©}¢ percent. The drain of currency from the West and orher points continues, and the supply of joanabie funds w largely in excess of the demand, Government securities were dull and rather heavy during the early part of the day, although there was a good investment demand at the counters of the leading dealers, In the afternoon, however, the market be- came strong, and there was a brisk speculative ‘uquiry for fivo-twenties of all the issues, uuder which prices advanced 14a % percent, The plethora of idle capital at this centre is causing large purchases to be made for temporary investment by the banks, trust companies and other corporations, as well as individuals, and tue cendency of prices is upward. Thero fs also an active demand for Ccntral Pacitic iret mortgage railway bonds through the financial agents of the company, Messrs. Fisk & Hateb, and the price of the bonds bas just been advanced from uinety-ive and tuterest to ninety-eight and interest. At the close the market was strong at the subjoined quota- tions:—Registered, 1882, 1113¢ a 111%; coupon, 1581, J111¢ @ 111%; 5-20's, registered, 1862, 108% @ 10844; 6-20's, coupon, 1862, 111 a 111%; do, 1864, 108% 209; do, 1865, 1004 a 109% ; do., 1885, January and July, 1075 a 107%; do., 1867, 107%{ a 107%; 10-40%, registered, 1045; @ 104%; 1040's, coupon, 104 204% ; June 7.30's, 107% a 107%; Inly do., 107% a 207%; May compounds, 1864, 117°; 9 117/,; Auguet do., 116% w 11684; September do,, 116 a 11614 ; October do, 116% 0 116. The following circular bas been issued to-day by ‘Messrs. Fisk & Hatch in reiation to the first mortgage ‘oonds of the Central Pacific Railway Company :— The sale of the first @ bonds of the Central Pacific Raitroad Company has recently been so rapid and extensive that the full amount wah the company z oposed to sell at the ofigiosl price of 95 and interest as been marketed, and tue price has been advanced to.08 and interest, The progress of the road, a conditien of the company’s affairs, their abundant cas! igh credit would s:em to fully the price of their first mortgage afford a suMfcient guarantee of an active demand he bonds at the advanced rate, Owing to the failure of the members of the regular ‘and open stock boards to make a satisfactory ‘with the lessee of the lower-hall of the Stock Exchange ‘building, it is announced that they will meet to-morrow for the transaction of business in the long room under the Gold Exehange, in New street, The public will be admitted ag spectators, but only members of the two ‘voards will be permitted to take part in the dealings. ‘The object of this movement appears to be to exclude a soumber of persons who aro not members of either wooard from transacting business as brokers or as buyers and eellers om their own account. This result may pos- aibly be accomplished, but in the absence of any othor ‘eve for the lower ball of the Stock Exchange the proba- Wwility is that terms will be made which will result in the ‘brokers returning to their old quarters, although itis a wretchedly dark and iil ventilated apariment, . Erie sold down to 74}, at the Fifth Avenue Hotol last sight, but {t opened with o firmer tone this morning, and at the early session of the open board sales were made at M40 74%, and the whole raliway share market was firm, At the first regular board thore was a qoueral decline and Erie sold as low as 73% New York Contral closed % lower than at the samo time yesterday; Erie 1%, Cloveland and Pittaburg 1, Cleve. tand and Toledo 2X, Rock Isiand 1, Northwestern pro- ferred 1%, Fort Wayne 2, Pacific Mail 1}, Cumbertand Coal 1, Western Union Tolograpn' %;, Michigan Southern 244. Leaving bebiad Wall street and ite schoming stock speculations, leaving behind counting rooms and marts of trade, leaving behind business of every kind and casting, io fact, every shadow from the brow, those who could aflord to go sicighing and could get sicighs went, and all were intent on enjoyment, The throng was not So numerous in the forenoon, but still enowgh to make the sceno on all the suburban roads very lively and animating. It is not often we seo such steighing and it ‘is not often it lasts so long, aad therctore there is the more general eagerness to seize the flilting enjoyment ibaffords whtl ib lasts. Between three aud four o’ciock in the aft noon the rush and crush of sieigos begin to show th selves; til the night shadows set in this rash and crash continue to increase. In the Park the maze of moving sigighs and whiriing confusion of horses and mingling music of sleigh bells are a wonder to behold. Tho nine and a half miles of drive in the Park are quickl, accomplished. Through all the windings of the up bill, down hill, across bridges, under bridges, the a along am their beadiong flight. lt woutd though there must be collisions, but there has been only one reported thus tar, attended with no serious results; and only one runaway case hasap- a this with nod ge beyond a sight reduce Hue of a 1 As whenever there is sieighing in New Ton, So yesterday every va- riety of vehicle was to be seen, and their ocoupants represented almost every variety aud phase of metro- politan lit But the sleighing carnival, for such it is, is really at its height in the evening. It is then those who cannot get away during the day como in (or their share of the enjoy- meut. The moontight with its soft and meliowing Ins tre brought out more last evening than the dazsling brilliancy of the noonday sun, And it brought out « different set of people, too, those now clamorously de- termined to be happy, rollicking parties of tively youn men and lively young ladies, who make the uight and park vocal with their suelodies. The night was cold, colder, than it bas been auy time yet, but so much the more clear and full rang out their vores on tne stili nicht a'r, and so much the happier were thoy. Lt i¢ midnight, and still eleighiug parties aro enjoying themselves—through the Park, along Btooningdale road, through the up town avenues, and evea iaio New Jersey and on Long Isiand; for the sicyghing és guod all about us, cutters and sleighs aro ruuning with swift, mad coierity, and load {8 tte singing and boisterous the mirth. There wore probably uo less than iifteen thousand cutters and sleighs in Central Park and the leading up town avenues yerterday, giving between forty and fifty thousand participants in one day's p.ca- sures of the sleighing carnival, ‘Atver eight P. M. there 1 no record of vehicles entering the Park; but ap to this lume there were over ten thousand cutters and sleighs in the Park, Dr Johnson suggosts sitting in a draft of air on a lump of ice, swith one’s feet in ico w: ad ringing a tea bell w ch hand, a8 @ cheap way of en- Joying tne pleasures of sleigh riding. But vr. Johnson ‘was an old fogy, aod there were nosuch pretty giris hen and buffalo robes and skilful decoctions of bot drinks. Our advice to those who Lave not yet tried tho sleiguing with which our isiand is now 60 beneficently blest is to try it, and our word for it at the close, as says Gall Hemilton in her “Gala Days,” 1 will ba set down as a gem of experience worthily to be reckoued (he chief gem of tue beatitudes.
