Smany en Remnere—The Bell(ce-Merry ‘Uhimes—Scenes Cle ko Road, on Leng Isinad and in Now Jersey. Among all the carnival scoues that have characterized ‘the recent “‘swow season’? perhaps no one Was more re- mrrkable for genuine pleasure than that of yesterday. ‘There were revellers on Broadway, revellets on Fifth avenue, in the Park, on Bloomingdale and Heriem \sno, but there were no jong faces to daunt the fair Presence of the snow. The gay bolls rang werrily, music pervaded the air and Jo paans were hummed by every voice, Tho cheerful fires on the hearths of the colamned mansions along the routes where the great krleidoacope scenos, in which horses and sleighs were forever blending in wew forms, were enacted, were em- ‘Diems of the cheerful warmth within the hearts of all, and thie notwithsts nding tbe wind was so sharp and at times 80 piercing that one’s sleighing faculties were chilled into a sari of torpor. There was music, though, in the wind, ag, ‘t blew ameng the te! trees in the Park, now angry &né@ tempestuous, like the surges of ocean beagng upon # roek-bound coast, an? thon lesseugl and sullen like the receding wave—now sighing ama songhing with s mournful sweetness, aud then dying away in all the solemn cadences of # funoral Girge, One eeliom experiences a0 much soul-poetry in Lstening to old Boreas or to gentle zephyre, and the full swniflewace and force of the lines which came crowd: ing t© Ups for utterance ‘full twenty times during he day, wera appreciated: — Aud Winter, the grand old harper, Bmote his thueder-harp of pines, SCENES ON BROADWAY AND FIPTH AYENUR, AS the hour of noon commenced the ever varying scome. Wild, and at times sweet, sounds of bolls a:- trected the ears, and these streets looked as they never levked before—New York was fairly awake aud med with excitement, It was some time ore things could be separated to view them distinctly, and let their peculiar features become impressed on the mind. The first clearly defined’ object was a magnificent sleigh, drawn by six horses, gorgeously attired, and crowded with inmates, and weeping along beside this, like a bird passing on eagle, was a petite, swan-built more:y, light almost as a feather, and drawn by a blooded horse of exquisite symmetry, whose feet asemed scarcely totouch the flossey atoms beneath him. Close behind the groat sleigh came an establishment contrasting as widely as possible with the others. A few hours before, ite constituents lay quietly, possibly, reposing in some cellar, yard or lumber room, as innocent of excitement or excess ase toad in its rocky bed. It was formed of two rude poles for runners, upom which hed been mailed ap old crate, To this was a car-Rorse attached, and off to the scone of pleasure dashed !ts owner, keep- ing pace'with the swiftest, as proud of the figure he cut as any. Then followed a less ambitious party, consisting of a staid citi: with his wife and two daughters, in a good substantial sleigh, drawn by good substantial horses, whose orderly feclings and habits were not to be destroyed even by the contagious madness of a sleighing carnival. Darting 80 swiftly, asto leave room for scarcely a moment's ob- servation, & gayer party of Jaughing girls; and close beside them, lashing his piece of gaunt, lean horsetiesh, from whose neck depended an cow bell, into @ strange but swift gait, came an Irishman, with bis car body on runpers, determined not to be beaten by anything between Niblo’s and the Park. Now, a score of sleighs, of all imaginable forms and in the strangest contrast with each other, were under one’s eyes, and now thoy were swept away like mon on a chessboard, dashed by some angry hand in all directions, In the next instant, in some newer and more uely beautiful combinanon, they were therewagain. Every instant it was expected to see the mad animals that swept alcng with race horse speed, dash ioto each other, or looked for an immense barge torun down some light and graceful thing that seemed as if it would tall to pieces by ita own weight. But no such catastrophe happened; none appeared in the least.to check the wid speed they were going, no matter how closely they came together, vor how thickly the streets wore crowded, The destination of this living panorama seemed to be one and the same--to THE PARK. Although it would seem to be iinpossible to add to the number and-variety, of arabesque aud grotesque, of sleigh- ing establishments that Ulled the streets without collision, ‘aud a cousequent destruction of the wonderful concert of movement that strangely enough distinguished the whole scene; but now, to every gondola, at least five bad been added, and for one variety » dozem bad taken its place, The average speed had received, also, a pro- rtionate increase, and yet the bor forms foo the whole, if it may’be @o cxpressed, remained undisturbed. In_ this most cosmopolitan of cities, this great artery of life—the Park—is the most cosmopolitan of retreats. Other retreats may be specialtios—aristocratia, mediocre and humble—but here are the representatives of all social characteristics and al) pationa. Jt was yesterday the finest field in the world for tho ethnological student, Ina fo almost like the famous Cieopatra's, with a resplondeut team of steeds, the ribbons held by an ac- complished ‘‘ whip,’ were our owm countrymen aad ladies.
