OBITUARY. Rear Admiral J Drake Sloat. Rear Admiral Sloat, of the United States Navy, died ‘at his residence at New Brighton, Staten Island, on Thursday last, in the eighty-seventh year of bis age. ‘He wasone of the few survivors of the old school of officers who leut lustre to the service in the carly days ofthe republic, and who maintained the honor of the flag afloat and ashore for nearly three-quarters of century. Increasing years and bodily infirmities only Prevented him from actively participating in tho stirring scenes of the late war, but throughout he watched the career of the officers with an unsur- interess and solicitude, partaking equally in their elation in vie and their pain and chagrin in disas- ter. Born in 1’ he entered the navy as sailing mas- ter the 12th of Fi , 1800, but at the beginning of the foliowing year, in consequence of a reduction of the maval forces, was ly mustered out, At the begin- ning of the war of 1812, he was re-appointed Master in tho regular navy. On the 24th of July (813, he was commis- sioned as Lieutenant, and saw active service during the war with Great Britain and came out with credit and honor, In 1820 he made acruise to the Brazils in tho line-of-battle ship Franklin, bearing the blue flag of Old Ironsides, the present Rear Admiral Charles Siewart. He resurned to the Ponited States im the frigate Congress in 1822, In 1824 and 1825 he commanded the schoonor Grampus, one of Commodore David Porter’s fleet im the Weat Indies, when the Commodore was ed in ex- urpating the pirates which them frequented those waters, and participated in several engagements. In 1826 he was made a Master Commandant, and was placed in command of the sloop-of-war St. Louis in the Pacific squadron, where he served more than two years, After some years of shore service as commander of the naval rendezvous of New York, he was promoted to a full captaincy in the navy, in February, 1887, and placed on waiting orders, In 1841 he was placed in command of the Portemouth Navy Yard, where ho remained three yeare In 1845 he was made Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific squadron, where he remained until late in 1646, flying bis pennant on the frigate Savannah. Since that period he has been om fore in command of the Norfolk Nav: on special service, both as superintendent of the rglasiee: tion of the famous Stevens battery at Hoboken and su- perintendent of the United States mail steamships sail- ing from this port, in which connection he will be well remembered by a host of our merchants, who met him daily in our streets, and who could not fail to be im- pressed by his active but genial temperament and his fine business qualities, The Retiring Board of 1856 placed him on the reserved list and granted him indefin- ite leave.
