Yor misconduct agsinst the “ins,” end declare ‘themselves to be the disinterested champions the misused stockholders. According to accounts the affairs of the company are {&t present in the clutches of a “ring,” and ‘their efforts are directed towards the destruc- tion of this insatiable monster. Well, évery stock company in existence may be said to be run bys “ring.” Railroads, steamships, banks, insurance companies, mining ‘companies, and all associations under the management of boards of directors, are certain to find a greater or less number of such direc- tors bound together in the magic circle of 3 “ring.” These rings may not all be as deeti- tute of conscience and honesty as are the notorious municipal rings of New York city, some of them being only formed to perpetuate he authority and to gratify the small ambition ofa lot of highly respectable, well brushed and closely shaved gentlemen, who are aitached to the comfortable easy chairs and im- posing dignity of a directors’ room, and ‘therefore not productive of any great amount of injustice or injury to any party. In the case ot the Pacific Mail Steamship line, if: the @ffairs of the company have been run by a “ring,” they have certainly been at the same time managed in a muinner to yield a large Profit to the stockholiers. The “outs,” who are sp anxious to be “ins,” feel bound, bow- ever, to break up tpis. “ring,” to smash this machine, and to take the affairs of the com- pany under ther own control. They are re- formers, liberals, des ructives—all things that “outs” generally are, It is just possibie that if elected, they would carry out all their pro- fessions and ruthlessly destroy the terrible ring. But again, it. is just possible that, if successful, they would follow the usual exam- ple of the “ins,” and soon manufacture a new ring in-place of the old one, whose only differ- ence would be in the quality of the metal of which tt was composed. We have such cape rience frequently in our legislative and mu- nicipal, bodies, in which some great anti-ring reformer looms up in opposition to all corrupt combinations, unti! his voice suddenly dies away and is heard no more, and its owner is next recognized in the very centre of the circle #0 recently the subject of his fiercest denanci- ation. We take no partin the squabbles of these directors in esse and directors in posse, and are indifferent what may be the final resuit A close contest in such a company over the man- egement is sometimes productive of good, since 9 strong opposition is ulways the surest check that can be placed upon those in au- thority, and we presume that the stockholders ‘of the Pacific Mai! Steamship line are censi- ble enough to understand their own interests, and to remember the fute of the frogs who Docame dissatisfied with King Loz and got King Stork in exchange. At the same time the qtiarrel secms to have progressed far en and it is to be hoped that it may be compromised before the adjourned day o! election, so a8 to prevent a repetition of the not over dignified or creditable injurction farce of Wednesday last. The Pacific Mail Steamsbip Company is the cnly great nationa! line we-have, now that the Collins line is no more, whose steamships are known in foreign ports; and it is rot desirable that such a com- pany should be allowed to sink to the leve! of some Broadway railroad job, and be disgraced by the tearing, scrambling and Aghting of rival NEW YORK) HEP ALD, FRIDAY,’ TELEGRAPHIC NEWS FROM ALL PARTS OF THE WORLD.
