= FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Tavespar, Oct. 10—6 P, M ‘The gold market has been active to-day with a tend- @noy towards a recovery (rom the decline of yesterday, After opening at 1433¢ and touching 14334 it advanced Mteadily to 144, under a demand to cover ‘short’ con- Gracts, assisted by the aunouncement that the Treasury had sent back as counterfeit $156,000 of the se thirty notes of the second series dated June 15, 1865. The closing transactions in the room were at 143% a 14374, but subsequently, on the street, the quotation declined to 1433; a 14344. There was an active borrow. ing demand for coin, and loava were made without interest and at 1 6 per cent for carry- ing and 1-16 per cent per diem for bor. Towing. The gross clearings amounted to $96,227,000, the gold balancea to $1,535,831 and the cur- fenoy balances to $2,736,326. Yhe market is at present ‘under political manipuiacion and the democratic “ pool’? isheavily “short,’’ the object of the operation in gold Deing moral effect aud pecuniary profit combined, But ‘the cause of this depression wil also provoke a reaction, ‘and those who look for a declining market for gold will ind themselves mistaxen. The Treasury is understood to have sold freely to prevent a rise growing out of the ‘distrust occasioned by the seven-ibirty note sensation, y It was known to a few interested parties early in the Gay that seven-inirty notes had been returned from the ‘Treasury Vepariment ut Washington to the Assistant Treasurer here wuica were proaounced to be counter- felts, but it was not generally credited on the street ‘aptil afiernoon, when some of the rejected notes wore Wo be seen at the ofllo:s of the doalers in government se- ‘eurities who were unfortunate enough to have bought (hem. Those had been purchased or exchanged for ‘donds by the Sub-Treasvr’ without anything spurious Deing detocied about 1) m, and some of them were Prepented this morning to ome of the Sub-Treasury officials and pronounced genuine. The resemblance Detween tho genuine and the so-called spurious Motes is so exact that it is impossible’ to detect @ difference except such as is of common Oceurrence in the genuine as respects shade in printing ‘and margia in paper, The suspicion is therefore enter- tained—and this amounts to a belief in some minds—that these rejectod notes were printed from the same plate as the recognized seven-thirties of the second series, and that the Treasury has oniy discovered the “irregularity”? through duplicate numbers, A vague idea -is enter. tained thot there is more truth than poetry in the charges which ‘have been brought against the Depart- ment of over is-ues and a want of proper caresin Keeping the bond and note plates and paper from dishonest hands, Whether these rejected notes are genuine or epurious, however, the effect upon the public mind will be to create distrust &nd to cause seven-thiriy notes to be sent for redemp- tion or couversion from all parts of the country. All the so-called counterfeits are of the denommation of a Shousand collars, and they thus far appear to have found their way to this city from the West. They show signs ‘of having been handied a good deal, and if they are ‘Counteriei's they are the most skilfully executed we Bave ever seen, although sone profess to see a differ- moe In the size of the seal. To what extent these ‘Worthless notes are in circulation it is impossible to say at present, but from the appearance of those discovered Mt is to be interred that tere are many more like them. The stock market has been depressed to-day, and the Speculative feeling in the street is becoming tame again. Erie is attentively watched ; but the clique manipulating it seems to be unloading, and there is less disposition stiown to epeculate in it by those outside of the ring, Money is easier then it bas been for a fortnight past; but prices decline instead of rising, as was expected by the Dalle, A more treacherous and unsettled market has @eldom been seen, and it is likely to continue so for ,@tae time to come. The natura! influences affecting the Stock Exchange are in favor of a decline; but artifi- sial causes ure eo powerful for temporary purposes that {tis a matter of uncertainty how far the market will yield to lcgitimate pressure within a given length of ume. ‘There was a brisk demand for money from the stock houses, but the supply was fully equal to it at seven per cont, and there war, on the whole, moro ease than esterday, although lenders have no difficuity in em- ploying thoir funds at the legal rate. Discounts are pull mado with great caution, and the banks, asa rule, fefuse all paper that is not first class, the rate for which fanges from 7 to 9 per cent, only customers’ paper taken at the lower rate, The drain of cure fency westward is for the time being on a reduced seale; but the pork crop will quicken it in November, at s time when the flow southward to move the cotton érop will be largely increased tw volume. The fact that the Sub-Treasury balance at ‘his point is reduced to about a bundred and eight mil- Yiens is favorable to greater monetary activity, as the feceipts of the Treasury at this centro are likely to be preater than its disbursements for some weeks to come; but in view of the crop movements the department Id keep its currency balance as low as possible for next three months, At the carly session of the open board the stock mar- was heavy, New York Central sold at 1133¢ a 113% ; Reading, 101%{; Michigan Southern, $3%; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 82% a 83; Rock Island, (02% 2 103; Northwestern, 433; do. preferred, 671; a §23¢; Fort Wayne, 10014 210034; Western Union Tele- graph, 36 14 0 365;.
