ieee me vs FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Mosoay, August 19-6 P. Mf. ‘The railway share market has not been materialiy in- fluenced by the movement of currency westward, and ‘the indications are (ua! so long as practical ease is folk in monetary channels the bulls, who are now loaded with stocks, will continue to holdgibem. How long it will be ‘before we have an active seven per eent money market fs just now uncertain; but it is only # question of time, ‘and then the outpouring of speculative stocks will be “thick as leaves in Valiambrosa.”” ‘The money market remains as easy as it was last ‘weer, although the alatement of the associated banks for the week ending on Saturday shows a decrease of 96,573,633 in legal tender notes, and $5,362,114 in net deposits. The latter is mainly owing to the remittance Of eurrency westward to move the crops, butchiefly wheat and wool; amd each anccseding starement, for ome months to come, is likely to indicate a similar out- ward flow of capital, varying, however, considerably in ‘extent from week to week. Much of the currency sent ‘westward consisted of national bank notes, of which the Danks here pow hold.a very moderate amount, Heace the iarge decroase in iogal tenders is due to other Causes than the Western drain—namely, tho redemp- thon of August compound interest notes, which matured on (ho 15th inst, andthe sales of gold by the Treasury. From tho fact that the specie in the banks has increased $608,560, it is to be inferred that the Treasury sold more than its receipts for customs duties during the week, ‘The other changes (a the returns are animportant, the ans aud discoants Maying decreased $194,529, and the Girculation having increased $104,479, The totals of the present and previous statements stand as under: — August 10, uguct 17. $58.42 240 $259.282,411 11.997 5,920,557 Ls. 85,568,258. 333,669,797 2 198/408, 705 194,046,591 431 69,473, 798 . * 499) 868,035 414 230,517 13,743,650 19,272,301 At the same time last year the condition ef the banks ‘was as follows, and the Uufereaces appended are those betwoon the two returas tated respectively August 18, 1866, and Auguat 17, 1357: a Specie Girouiaton Now that the Western drain affords an outiet for na- tional bank notes, ali the city, as well as the country banks, wil! be likely to present their matared compound Interest notes for reteraption. This will have the effect of reductug their jegal reserve to the amount of the nationa! currency raveived ia exchange; but this 18 im- material, under existing circamstances, to the banks, and it will throw into cirentation some of the balnitce which has latterly bean lying idie in the Sub-Treasury. Loans are still mado freely to stock houses at 4.0 & per cont, while the principal dealers in government securi- es are amply supplied by private lenders at three, The discount line continues to show more activity, and the best grado of paper is variously rated at from five to seven per cent, according to names and the leagth of time it has to run. The banks are reluctant to take paper with more than ninety days unexpired. The geueral rato for the best grade is six per cent, alibough some banks are unwilling to do business below seven. Bank officers anticipate a six or even @ seven per cent money warket before the end of the month, and are disposed to hold their funds in readiaess accordingly. ‘Their resorves ara, however, wore than twelve millions in excess of the legal limit, and as their deposits are withdrawa the amoant of their necossary reserve will be reduced im proportion. ‘The go'd market has oxportenced a farther advance. After opeaing at 141 it rose steadily to 141%. and the closing transactions wore at 14154; but after the board edjourned 14134 was the bast bid, There was # moder- ately brisk borrowing demand for coin, which was met at $a 7 per cont per annum, and 1-64 a 1-32 per cent per diem im favor of the lender. The gross clearings amounted to $31,570,000, the gold balances to $927,102 and the currency balances to $1,963,896.. The demand for customs duties is stilt at the rate of about balt a million a day. ‘The receipts at the port iast week aggre- gated $3,070,000, and the Sub-Treasury disbursements of’ coin interest during the same time amounted to $152,000. The imports of ‘specie and bullion for the week were $129,024. The general employment of gold certificates in paying customs duties is shown by the receipt of $2,804.496 of last weok’s receipts in this form, only $174,000 having been in gold. The total amotnt of gold certincates issued by the Sub-[reasury ep to the 17th inst, was $214,867,600, of which 187,731,000 had been redeemed, jeaving $27,136,660 outstanding. The upward tendency of premium is attribuiabie to the reconstruction muddle, the Cabines maddie, the Treasury Department over issue muddle ‘and the prospect of the Western democrats organizing ‘@ party io favor of converting the funded debt into legal tender notes, which last may be considered a new way -of paying old debts. The Treasury is understood to have gold more than a.million of gold to-day, but with- out exerting any apparent influence in checking the tendoncy of the market. ‘The gonoral trade of the city shows signs of improve- ment, and the tone of feeling among the mercaatile community ia cheerful. In the dry goods market there is increased activity, and owing to the stocks of foreign and domestic goods being only moderately heavy prices ‘are well maintained, The receipts of cotton at all the ports are on a considerably larger seale than they were ‘at the beginning of the month, the total for the week ending on the 16tb inst, having been 6,830 bales, making an aggregate of 1,855,676 bales since September 1, ‘against 2,020,773 bales during the same (ime in 1805-66, The exports, on the other hand, are on « very light and declining scale, the total for the week having been only 4,639 bales, making 1,541,155 bales since the Ist of Sep- tember, against 1,909,950 baies for the corresponding period in the previous year. The stocks at all the ports aro reduced to 137,380 bales, against 811,257 bales at the same time in 1866, Of this aggregate ‘there was held at the dates of the Iniest ad- vices at New Orleans, 24,449 baler; at Mobile, 5,709; at Charleston, 822; at Savannah, 2,575; in Texas, 5,677; at Now York (estimated), 68,000; in Florida, 148, and at other ports (estimated), 30,000. The reports relative to the growiag crop are contradictory, but it is certaim that the cotton worm has done considerable damage in Tious sections, and especially in Louisiana, The heavy rains, too, submerged portions of the lowlands, aod the grass has proved troublesome to the planters; but a fa- vorable change in the weather has great!y improved the crop’s prospects, and more encouraging accounts are ‘new coming forward. The stock of cotton at Liverpool on the 3d inst, aggregated 675,800 Dales, and that at London 83,680 bales, while there were 50,000 bales of American and 772,710 of indian afioat, making a total of 1,542,140, against 1,672,550 at the same time last year.
