Orrawa, August 14, 1867, The chats (pronounced shams) are a number of islands forming a barrier across the Ottawa river, about twenty- seven* miles from Ottawa city. The waters of the Ottawa find their way through this barrier in'a number of chutes, or fais, which have a very picturesque effect, About the chats there is al this season a great quan- tity of timber accumulated, A long ‘slide’? is con- structed, through which the timber runs down below in “gribe,”” cack grib being manned by ® gang of two, three or four men; and there the cribs are banded into rafta The slide fg an artificial shallow canal, with @ log bottom, graded Zo that cribs may descend im safety. The cribs entor the stide one after tho other and run down it with great velocity, plunging a little at the foot of the slide, A very large quantity of timber passed and is passing this point for Quebec, where the demand is very limited, and lumberers have to hold over until the fall, when the demand and prices. may improve. There aro only three or four rafte more to pass, The quality of the timber is generally good. ‘There is a short railroad of three miles, to carry passen- gers and freight from the foot to the head of the chat, where they again take boat for points‘on the Upper Ot- tawa. The cars are open and are drawn by horses over a high be ery and through a very wild wooded Sounty. ‘Tae entire econe and mode of travelling is ro- =e a chief points up the river above the chats are Por- tage da Fort, ah ig ed (the terminus of the Ottawa and Brockville ) and Pemb; and the chief tribu- tary streams are the Madawaska, an, Bonnechire, Fitimahwe, all of which are lumbering points, From the chats to Aylmer the chief stream and placo is the Quio, Ayimer is nine miles from Ottawa cit; ‘and between those two places are the Chaudiero Rapids or Sault.
