Considerable attention is paid by the press of the ‘West Indies to a cure recently adopted by @ physician in Jamaica, Dr. Alex. Fiddes, F. R. 0. E. It bas pun the rounds of the Spanish, Engheb, French and Danish journals, and overywhere meets with the Righest encomiums. Several of the governments in- terested in the West Indfes have set apart hospital buildings fr the special treatment of yellow fever ‘ander Dr. Fiddes’ process. As that dread disease is making considerable ravages in the southern part of the United States, we give the following account of the treatment :— Calomel, quinine and all other medicines are set aside, as being not only useless, but positively in- jurious; the only medicine recommended is a full dore of castor oil at the beginning of the disease. The remedy of Dr. Fiddes then consists in the inter- nal administration of sulphurous acid, combin: with the external application of iced sheets around the body when the skin is hot and ‘ay, , or with ap occa- sional vapor bath when the skin ie dry without being very hot. bce Moc gh gd acid is not given in its pure but combined with an atkaline base, such as the bdi-sulphite of soda, the sulphite of magnesia or ust, or of smmonia, of which the former preparation is pro- bably the best, being tastclees and not likely to offend the siomach. ‘The doso is twonty graius every two or three hours in s glass of water. ‘The use of sulphurous acid and the application of the wet sheets or vapor bath are indicated as much by tho Aiotates Uf theory ao by the lessons of experience. The first is a preventive agaiast fermentation of ene vrow, the two latter are potent agencies for withdrawing poi- sonous matter from the body without weakening the ‘vital powers. Since Professor Poli, of Mil instituted his elaborate geries of experiments to tost ficacy of suiphurous acid in arresting fermentation in the blood of anim: . De Ricci, of Dublin, and Professor Bor- graeve, of Ghent, rej the same, the therapeutical power of this modicine has been well known to the medical profession. But Dr. Fiddes is entitled to the credit of having introduced itasa remedy for yellow fever and soveral other diseases of the zymotic family. There seems to be no doubt of the efficacy of this now treatmont, and Dr. Fiddes will have the oredit of having, ina great measure, relieved the West Indies of the dread which Europeans have in settling in them, besides preventing much suffering and untimely death ; and it is but natural to bopo he will reap some sub- stantial benedt from a discovery which he has so gen- erously made public through the West India press. =~ THE DRUGGISTS AND THE SALE OF POISOXS. TO THE EDITOR OF THE ERALD. New York, August 15, 1867. In your caution to druggists this morning you are slightly in error im regard tothe law. Tenclose a copy of the law. The law is an excellent one in its geveral requirements, but too sweeping or too general in ite de- tails; for instance as to opium and its preparations.
