FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Wepxssvay, July 31—6 P.M. The railway share market was buoyant at the com- encement of business this morning, but during the tof the day it was unsottied at intervals and rather -dutl The speculative feeling 1s hardly as strong on the ‘Dull side as it was last week, but so long asthe pre- wont monetary facilities at the disposal of the Stock Ex- change continue undiminished speculation is likely to roponderate in favor of arise, and the bull element ‘will be the controlling one. Nevertheless, the reactions ‘Whiok are coriain to overtake the market at intervals Will be suficient to remind the bulls that their reign ‘is not undisputed and to show outside buyers that they sand their margins may be soom parted. There is les «special activity in Erie than there was a few days ago, ‘but it stil remains the cynosure of all eyes, aud it ‘touched 77; in the forenoon. The supply of money is still superabundant, although she demand from the Stock Exchange is targe. Loans are made on government securities at four per cent, and ‘the leading dealers in tho latter are, in exceptional cases, enabled to borrow considerable sums at three, The “genera! rate on mixed collaterals is five per cent; but houses ia good credit are, in some instances, offered toans at four, The amount of commercial paper seek- ing discount ie light, and the best grade only is taken by ‘tho bankers at 6a 7 percent, There are as yet no indi- -cations of an outward drain of currency, although some of the Westera journals remarked about a woek ,ago that the exchanges were turning in favor of that ssection of the country, Some light remittances were made just'then o@ account of the wool crop; but the ‘wostward current to move breadstuis has not setin, sand when it does it will be graduai, and several weeks must clapse before utcan exert any material in fluence upon the condition of the monoy market at this centre ‘beyond an advance of perhaps one per Cont in the rate Of interest. At the early session of the open board railway shares ‘were stronger, at an advance upon the closing quotations cof last evening, New York Contral selling at 108%, and Erie at 773g. At the Grst regular board there wasa moderately good demand for the speculative stocks, but the previous improvement was not fully sustained, New York Central closed % higher than at the same time yesterday, Erie %, Reading %,-Clevoland and Pittsburg 144, Milwaukes and St. Paal preferred 1, Rock Asiand 1, Northwestern 34, do. preferred 134, Fort ‘Wayne 1, Ohio and Mississippi certificates §, Pacific Mai! 1, Canton 134,-Western Union Telegraph %%. At the open Board at one o’clock the market was Gteady, ana subsequently it expéricnced improvement. At the balf-past two regular board there was a very light volume of business transacted, and prices dectined in some instances, New York Central, nowever, advanced to 106, ex-dividond of three per cent, the equivalent of 100';. New York Central closed 2% lower, ex-dividond, than at the first reguiar board; Erie 3, Ohio and Mississippi cortificates 34, Canton %. The old express shares were firm undor a steady -domand, coming apparently from paries acquainted swith the affairs of the respective companies. ‘here is a growing belief that arrangements for a eatisfactory Gettloment with the oppogition company are progressing favoraply. United States advanced 1, solling at 763,. Adams gold at 74, and Wells, Fargo & Co, at 68%. At the balf-past three open board the market became eavy, although there was no marked pressure to soll. It is a matter of considerable interest and specniation how long thie @iagnation of capital will last and what channels of em- ploy moat it will be likely to find. The opinion is enter. tained by many on this side of the Atlantic that a por- tion of the immense amoun: of capital now lying idle in ‘tho United Kingdom and om the Continent will be at- tracted by entorprises in the United States; and there ts little doubt that, if the politi. ‘cal reconstruction of the Southern States wasn accomplished fact, the attention of European capitalise would, in the present state of monetary ailairs in the Old World, be directed to our vast unde- ‘veloped sonrcen of wealth. Sooner or tater the political end ia view will bave been attained; but meanwhile we shall have missed an opportunity which may not ‘soon occur again; for #0 long as reconstruction is not fully consummated the ultimat» resait is open to doubt, and this creates sufficient distrust of the future to chock ‘the flow of foreign capital in this direction and to ope- cate unfavorably upon our national credit, There have been no transactions of importance in foreign oxchange, and rates are steady on the basis of 110% for the best bankers’ sterling at sixty days. A larze number of the sporting fraternity left this city yesterday morning to witness a fight between Pat McQuade and Jimmy Morell of New Jersey, which took Place in the vicinity of Bergen. The men staked $100 aside on the result of the encounter, and the provable iffgue has been considerably. discussed during the past week by the sporting men of this city, The party om- barked on a schooner at an early hour and reached their destination at about half-past four o'clock A. M., when, after the selection of a piece of apringy turf as tho arena in which the relative physical superiority of the two principals was to be determined, the preliminaries were speedily arranged and completed, the crowd in their anxiety to feast their depraved tastes on the demoral- izing exhibition lending a willing hand in adjusting the paraphernalia, McQuade stands five foet eleven inches in height, weighs one hundred and forty-seven pounds, and was eequired by Bill Poters and Jack Robson, of New Jersey. Morell measures five feet nine incheain his socks, lowers the beam at ten stove tweive, and was attended by Hank Maber ana Joo Dunne, Jack O’Brieo, a well known sporting man of Elizabeth, acted as referoo. Shortly after their arrival on the ground the “gentle savages” arranged their toilettes and entered the ring. In the toss for corners McQuade won the choice and selected the easterly corner,» which gave him an ad- ditional advantage, owing to the ground being some- what higher. Upon the call of time the men stepped nimbly to the scratch and stood up for THE FIGHT. Rooxo 1.—After a little preliminary sparring McQuade administered a sharp blow on Morell’s nose, and re- ceived im return heavily on the neck. A heavy counter followed, when both parties indalged ta some rapid half- arm exchanges. when Pat shot out a direct jeft-hander and knocked Moroll clean off his feet. Roonp 2.-—Morell ted off briskly and got home on Mac's neck, and took the return onthe nose, reversing the order of the previous round. A heavy counter resulted in Morell being lifted from the grass by his aids and taken to his corner. Roun 3.—McQuade sparred effectively for an opening and delivered both hands in quick succession on Moreli’s oltactory organ, drawing blood profusely, and closed the round by going down. Roonp 4.—Some heavy exchanges took placo in the opening of th's round, whea both men clinched and struggled for the fall. Morell put a * back hook’’ on Mac and threw him backward, falling heavily on top, Ror 5 axp 6.—Slight sparring, both men short of wind ii h round, and after wrestling for the fail both went de together. hm 7.—Morell led off beavily on Pat's nose, and followed up, getting the exchange on the rained the close of the wrest!q McQuade was found Rios 8 —Immediately on arriving at the centre of the ring Mac delivered a reeling ‘left-hander on Morell’s mouth and knocked him clean off bis pine. Mac was ultimately fought down in bis own corner. Rouxp 16.-—-Mao led off again, and sent in a terrible right hander on Moretl’s mouth. Jim exchanged stinger on his opponent’s mouth and clinched, Mac being thrown heavil, Rounp 17. , continuing the preface to the two pre- ceding rounds, again dashed in with telling eftect on Mo- rell’s mouth, and received a stunning compliment in re- turn on the nose, which knocked him again off his fect. Rovsp 18.—Both men came up puffing, baving been already engaged about an hour, and exhibiing severe marke of punishment. Mac's pose and chin were boaten into gashed and lacerated wounds, while Jim's eyes woro almost clored, and hts neck and forehead showed severe traces of Lecaee prowess.
