FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Farivar, July 26—6 P. M. ‘The railway share market experienced a powerful re- egtion this morning from tbe sharp depression of last @¥ening, and Guring the remainder of the day the of prices, although irregular at intervals, was Erie leading the movement, Ata meeting of ‘the representatives of the trunk lines held this after- Doon at the office of Mr. Sloan, the referee, there was Some disagreement, and Erie withdrew from the com- pact, and will now act independently of the other lines. ‘The Baltimore and Ohio having withdrawn some time ‘ago, the only partios to the compact remaining are the Now York Centra! and the Pennsylvania Central, and it is therefore considered to be virtually atan end, The speculative demand for all the leading stocks is active, Dut attention is being more particularly directed to the railways west of Chicago, like Milwaukee and St. Paul ud Chicago and Northwestern, these having an entire monopoly of a vast and rich farming country, and not being hampered by the competition which exists be. tween the trunk lines on this side of Chicago, The de- mand for stocks for investment, however, may be con- sidered to have coased, and speculation, although ex- cited, fs, except in a faw instances, confined to the brokers and other professional speculators; but these are mumerous enough to control the market in the Present easy Condition of monetary affairs, and they are dikely to succeed in advancing prices to a still higher point, although real values do not warrant it, There is a moderately large demand for money from the Stock Exchange, but the supply is more than adequate to meot it, and loans continue to be made freoly at five per cent on mixed collaterals, with & fow exceptional transactions for small amounts at six, and at fouron governments, The Treasury is baying the June, July and August compound interest notes of 1364 as they are presented, but no considerable sums have yet been rodeomoed of those issués, nor is it likely that there will bo while money remains as cheap and abundant as it is at present. The discount line is still inactive, the banks being unwilling to take any but the best grade of com- mercial paper, of which thero 1s very little offering. ‘The latter is generally rated at 64; per cent, but in some instances it passes at six, and in others submils to seven. ‘The scrutiny of names is a3 closo as it was at the time Of the recent failures in the dry goods trade, although uo fresh difficulties have been reported. At the West the money market is assuming a now feature, which is thus noted by a Chicago jourval:— There is quite a marked change in the condition of the money market. Tne balance of trade has turned in favor of the West, and within the week we may look for the commencement of a steady flow of curroncy from the East. The demand for currency was quite active to-day, and in uarters it was reported rather close, Inthe Dusinegs was quite dull at the iscounts is moderate, though le than at any time last week, and tho , cout demand for oxchange is light. a ret for New York funds was very heavy, and were with difficulty placed between banks at 50c, a 250, discount—mostiy the lower igure. The counter rates are irregular at 3a 1-10 discount buy- tng, and 1-20 a 1-10 premium selling. At the ton o'clock session of the open board railway shares were strong, New York Central selling up to 109%, Erie to 743¢ and Northwestern to 48%.
