Face fame, would be sold at auction yesterday noon, ¢row together a very large crowd of gentlemen on board the vessel, which was lying at the foot of Wall street. The assemblage was composed of all classes of business men, many of whom embraced the opportunity for the first time of seeing the trim craft that had with others performed such daring deeds. The throng gathered upon the deck of the neat little vessel and crowded the end of the pi spending their time in Ponining her condition and admiring the many beautiful points shown in her model. Everything was found to be in the most perfect ship-shape condition. Nota seam was sprung, not s batt started, and tho handsome gilding and neling of the rior was un- tarnished, Her tail, tapering masts were fanitlessly scraped, and her neat signal, bearing the initial V., floated proudly at her masthead, mute evidence of her prowess, The sale wasto have taken place precisely at noon, but owing to tho great crowd assembled and tho jong time expended in discussing the character of a fino lunch, and the quality of sparkling champazne that was passed around unsparingly to the many visitors, it was quite one o'clock bofore Mr. £. A. Lawrence, the auctioneer, called the interested crowd about him in the drizzling, soaking rain on the deck, and began his work, He mi- nutely explained the character of the Vesta; that she had cost Mr. Piorre Lorillard, Jr., $40,000; that she would be sold with all hor running rigging, anchors and chains, sails, galley, fixtures, linen, plate, crockery, &c.; that she was one hundred and one feet long ou deck, twenty- five feet beam, seven foot six inches depth of hoid, and two hundred and ono tons burden, rther added that an eminent shipbuilder bad carefully examined her, and had estimated that her hall could be raised two and ahalf feet for the sum of $4,000; and this would give her great stowage capacity, and admirably fit her for the fruiting trade of the West Indies or busiaess of asim lar nature, “Now, gentlemen,” cried the auctioneer, ‘how much for this magnificent and celebrated yacht— how much?” And from boneath an umbrella, whose immensity covered the form of the bidder, “$5,000” came floating up to the auctioneer. This low figure startled seller, owner and all; but bid aiter bid came in until $12,500 was reached, when s pause gave ovidence that the maximum of those inclined to purchase had almost been reached. From this point the bids came in very slowly, the auctioneer exhausting all his eloquence upon the character and fittings of the trim craft until $14,500 was reached, and, fully convinced that the leading bidders would not add the smallest pit- tance to that figure, consulted with Sir. Lorillard, who assured him that unless this price was increased ho must withdraw her. This the auctioneer communicated tothe anxious crowd, who loudly demurred, and some Manifested @ spirit of indignation, seemingly of the opinion that Mr. Lorillard could not justly nor legally retain that privilege. Atthis the sale went on, when by an agreement between her owner and the ostensible Purchaser, Mr, Wm. Nott, No. 8 Fletcher streot, this city, the vessel was bought in for $15,000. This rather ‘spiritiess termination had an unpleasant effect upon the crowd that had been standing nearly an hour in a pelt- ing rain, But the matter was sottied, and half an hour later the swift little tug that had towed the yacht to her position in the morning again made fast wo her and sped away to the old quiot anchorage off Greenpoint, AQUATICS, SPECIAL CORRESPONDENCE OF THE HERALO.
