TR RE FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Monpay, June 17—6 P. M. Speoulation in the railway share market has been languid to-day, and a very moderate business only bas been accordingly transacted. The continued absence of outside support has a discouraging eflect upon the pro- fessional speculators who are at present operating for a rise, and there is a corresponding indisposition to “load up” further until the harvest prospects become more decided or a demand from the public springs up, The latter is not likely to be experienced to any mate- rial extent until after the pecuniary results of abundant crops have been reaped in whole or in part, and meanwhile the professional ‘speculators will have to rely upon each other for sup- Port, or cut each others’ throats at discretion on the Kil- kenny cat and dog-eat-dog principle. It is undeniable ‘that railway shares are and have been for some time past selling at prices so low asto be, provided the roads ‘they represent wero well managed, below their real value, and even under existing circumstances they are probably cheap, The public, however, has lost confidence in railway shares in consequence of not a few of the roads being man- aged in Wall street for the benefit of the specula- tive directors, and entirely regardless of the interests of stockholders, These men manipulate their respective ‘stocks up and down irrespective of redl values, and solely to entrap the unwary and fill their own pockets, They go designediy to work with the necessary capital, ‘and for the outside public to attempt to compete with such skillod combinations is very much like playing against sharpers with loaded dice, and the one class of men is as unscrupu- lous as the other, To caution the public against the snares and pitfalls of Wall street would seem to be unnecessary in view of its past experience if we did not know that in many instances the latter is like seed eown on stony ground and soon becomes effaced. AS it is wo advise all those who are contemplating ‘‘a Ayer” in stocks to change their mind on the subject, but to those who can pay for their securi and lock them up for an indefinite period in their strong boxes we have no words of discouragement. The time will come when all the leading railways in the country will be far more valuablo properties than they aro now, and their stocks will undergo a propor, tionate improvement in value, By that time they will ‘be bought up for investment, and stockholders will feel sufficient interest in the management of those great highways of traffic to vote at the annual elections for directors, while the stocks being out of Wall street, directors will no longer seek their positions for stock Jobbing purposes. The sooner this time comes the bet- ter for stockholders and the commercial and travelling public, The money market has been easy at six per cent, with exceptions at seven, on mixed collaterals, and in most instances the leading dealers in governments have been supphed at five. The supply of first class commercial Paper continues light and in fair demand at 6% a 734 per cent, the majority of transactions being at the legal rate, in which connection we may remark that the Sooner the legal rate is abolished the better. New York in this respect would only be following the example of Massachusetts; and surely the State which prohibits shaving on Sunday and.the sale of malt or vinous Niquors om any day of the week should not be allowed to outdo us in liberty—especially the liberty of Controlling our own money matters, The statement of the associated banks for the week shows a decrease of $4,412,672 in deposits, which is mainly attributable to a decrease of $3,042,649 in specie, the natural consequence of the export demand for coin and the payments into the Sub-Treasury on account of Customs duties, The loans have decreased $4,248,833, owing, probabiy, to the sale of government securities Previously owned by the banks, The legal tendors, Bevertheless, show an increase of $2,001,187, while the Circulation has decreased to the trifling extent of $11,979. ‘The totals of the present and previous statements stand es under;— At the same time last year the condition of the banks ‘Was as follews, and the differences appended are those ‘Detween the two returns, dated respectively Juno 16, 1966, and June 15, 1867 :— Tune 16, 1866. «June 15, 1867, + $247,301,547 Decrease... seen eee jacrease. 1,439,086 iar pf ree 21,255,010 In the condition of the Western money markets there fs no material change to note, At Cincinnati the demand for loans, as compared with the supply of capital, is feported good, and the discount market is moderately active at6to12 percent. At Chicago there is a fair in- quiry for discounts on grain paper, but the names of borrowers are closely scrutinized, and they need to be backed with undoubted collaterals. The mercantile de- mand is light, and the national banks there are remit- ting the June compound interest notes to New York for payment, which has caused an amount of plain legal tenders nearly equal to the compound notes withdrawn to be placed in bank vaults in their stead, the National Carrency act requiring that a reserve of 25 per cent of legal tenders be held against deposits and circulation. ‘Tt is eatisfactory to find that the Western journals still Feport the crop prospects as favorable, and that as the season advances the signs of abundance become every- where more decided. NEW JERSEY INTELLIGENCE. Hudson City. Svrrosxp Cup. Murpgr.—On Sunday afternoon the body of a boy in a nude state was found on tho bauk of the Hackensack river, near the railroad bridge, where it ‘was washed up apparently by the tide, The man who made the discovery immediately proceeded to give informa- tion to the Coroner, but when he returnsd the body was gone, The mark of a boat, which had been run up in the mud, was visible, as well as the footprints of two men, who had evidently been there in their bare feet. A short time previous to this a row boat, containing five mon, was seon passing the Plank Road bridge, and it is sup) the body was stealthily removed by this party, but for what purpose is a mystery. Fauna or 4 Brince—Narrow Escars,—About ten o'clock yesterday morning the foot path of the bridge over the canal at Warren street gave way and precipi- tated several persons who were standing upon it into the water below. Fortunately they received mo serious damage, although their escape from severe, if not fatal injuries, is very remarkable. When it 1s remembered that the fall occurred at an hour when the streets are filled, and at one of the most public points, it seems very providential that no lives were lost. It is said that -the bridge has been in a dangerous condition for several months fares but that through the negligence of the 7 lacongana ictals the matter has not received the attention Elizabeth. Tae New Carnouic Caurce.—The quiet old town of Hackensack was in somewbat of more than ordinary commotion on Sunday last on the occasion of the laying of the corner stone of the new Catholic church. Such an event was something which the staid settlers of that region seemed to think would never occur. But the edifice which has been commenced gives evidence of the fact that it will be one of the finest churches of the kind in this diocese, The temperance and religious societies jed = yesterday afternoon bee the principal streets to the site of the church, at which place a large crowd bad already assembled, "The corner stone was blessed and laid by the Very Rev. James W. White, for many years an eminent jurist and one of the Judges of the Superior Court of this city. Mr, White was a descendant of one of the oldest families of Limerick, Ireland, and a nephew of the celebrated Gerald GriMin, He emigrated to this country in 1823, when but sixteen years of age, and commenced the study of the law with General Waterman, at Binghamton, Broome county, New York. Shortly after his admission to the bar he came to this city, in 1834, and founded the Freeman's Journal, which be edited for a long time, He served one term as Judge of the Superior Court, with much credit to himself, and in the practice of his profession as a lawyer acquired an enviable reputation for ability and zeal. His untiring Iabors tended to under. mime bis heslth, and his latest efforts in tbe Court of Claims, at Wastington, it is believed, were the imme- diate causes of tis fatal illness.
