Ss FINANCIAL and COMMERCIAL. Wepsrspay, June 5—6 P. M. Tho raitway share market has been dull, but onthe whote steady to-day, and towards the close it showed an improving tendency. The speculative feeling is, how- ‘ever, tame, and even the professional speculators on the bull side are indisposed to venture upon a bold move- meat in the absence of outside support. The money market has developed no new feature, and the supply continues equal to the demand, at seven per gent, and in a fow instances some of the dealers in gov- ernment seourities are enabled to borrow outside of Wall street at six. The invariable rate at the banks, how- ever, for call loans, is seven per cent, with exceptions in favor of government securities, There is not much doing in the discount line, and the best grade of commer- cial paper pagees at Ta 8 percent, A Cincinnati journal Temarks some signs of an outflow of currency to the country to pay for wool; but as yet this has exerted ‘no effect upon Banking balances, Business in the West Temaing in a semi-stagnant condition; but the crop Prospects are calculated to stimulate improvement im all directions, The hay crop is now too far advanced to be #eriousty injured by the weather, and the yield is likely to be unusually large, That of 1866 was estimated at 21,778,627 tons, and valued at $317,561,837; but the ‘erop this year promises to greatly exceed it. The wheat crop the same year was valued at $333,773,646, the quantity being 161,999,906 bushels, and tlie indicatio! ‘are that it also will be much larger than last year’s; ‘and a0, too, of the corn crop, the yield of which in 1866 ‘was 867,846,205 bushels, valued at $591,666,295. Tho addition of all this to the aggregate wealth of the coun- ‘try will exert @ powerful influence in retrieving the \ trade of the country from the slough of dospond in which it has been for more than half a year past, At the first regular board railway shares wore dull and barely steady. Now York Central closed 3 lower than @t the same time yesterday, Erie 1, Michigan Southern %, Rock Island %, Northwestern 1%, do, preferred 1%, Quicksilver 1, Boston Water Power %, Western Union Telegraph %{. Hudson River was % higher, Pacific Mail 1%. Government ‘securities wore firm but quiet, except for coupon tive-twenties of 1865, new issue, which were moderately active—the latter advanced and the issue of 1862 +f. During the rest of the after. moon the market was quiet, but steady, and at aix e’clock the following quotations were current:—New York Contral, 98% a 99; Erle, 5934 a 3¢; Reading, 104%; Michigan Southern, 67% a 68; Cleveland and Pittsburg, ‘75; Rook Island, 87% a 88; Fort Wayne, 97 a 34; North- western, 34a 3; do. preferred, 5334 a %%; Obio and ‘Mississippt oortifioates, 24%; Pacific Mail, 133% a 184. Loans were made at 2a 5 per cent for carrying. The gross clearings amounted to $30,144,000 and the gold balances to $1,443,895. Tne @eamor Aloppo, sailing to-day, took out $157,856 in specie and the Bavaria $56,000, while the Boston gteamer had about $211,000, American silver is quoted at 534 2 6)¢ below the price of gold and Mexican dollars at 103% @ 103% in gold. ‘The market for bills of exchange on England was very rm, but extremely dull for continental bills. Bankers’ bills om England at sixty days were quoted at 1100 1103; at three days, 1103; 8 %; commercial bills, 1093, a %; bills on Paris at sixty days, 5.13% 0 6.12}; at dhree days, 5.113, a 5.10, Other bills were rated ehus:— a 72 6 a % 6.18% 06.16 It is tobe hoped that the experience of the Treasury {mn the case of the First National Bank of New Orleans, aod other instances of a similar character preceding it, will not be without service in causing stricter rules to be enforced with regard to public deposits in national banks, Ample security should in all cases be exacted at the time the deposits are made, and in cases where banks are unabie to comply with the rule, deposits should be transferred to the nearest sub-treasury or local depost- tory, where the necessary security cau be obtained, The statement of the national debt for the month of May ehows the following changes from the retura of the previous mouth :— COIN INTEREST. The saies of new five-twenties of 1865 have been unusually neavy and largely in excess of the aales of soven-thirty notes. Hence the iucrease of nearly thirty-nine millions in the amount of currency in the Treasury. The volume of United States notes has been contracted more than a million, owing maiuly, it i said, to the withdrawal of mutilated notes, while the com- pound interést notes have been reduced to the extent of $4,744,270, The receipts for customs and the receipts, payments and balances at the Suab-Treasury in this city for the @tpired portion of the week have been as follows: — Custom gg ary <—h ala —- ents 8 Balances, 13 soon ast 484 $123,769,762 600,751 126 804,118 704, ei 2 440,198 128,008,746 The exports, exclusive of specie, from New York to foreign ports for the week ending Jane 4, and since the commencement of the year, compare as follows with those for the corresponding periods in 1965 and 1866; — 1865, 1806, 1867, $1,725,342 $1,694,055 $2,437,300 60,378,039 96,810,858 80,903, $42 Since Jan. 1... $71,100,081 $08,104,413 $89,001,741 ‘The foreign imports at New York for the week, since January 1, 1867, and for the corresponding period of the past two yoars, compare as follows:— For the week, .
