ee FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Mowpay, May 20—6 P. M. ‘The railway share market has been extremely dull to- day, but after two o'clock it developed an improving tendency and a fitle more animation than had previ- ously characterized it, and closed firm at an advance. It is a noticeable feature that, notwithstanding the in- activity of business on the Stock Exchange, prices are slow to yield, and this is accepted by the bulls as a good sign that bottom has been touched and that a revival of activity will be followed by a brisk rise. The prolonged depression which the market has passed through, how- ‘ever, has discouraged the bulls and they have lost faith an themselves, while the bears have been correspond- fogly emboldened. A large majority of the members of the regular board are at present interested in favor of a further deciine, and they accordingly Fesist all efforts to the contrary, and ir the absence of Outside support the professional speculators on the bull side have hard work to turn the market in their favor. ‘Some imagine that this monotony and hesitation will not terminate until an abundant harvest becomes an ac- cepted fact, white others are more sanguine and still believe in a speedy recovery, although they have siready experienced frequent disappointments in this reapect. The certainty of abundant crops will undoubt- edly exert a material influence upom the course of specu- Tation on the Stook Exchange, and it is probable that in ix or eight weeks public opinion on the subject will be sufficiently decided to effect the price of breadstuffe, and thé sone of business generally, both in and out of Wall street. if the railways whose stocks are the sport of ‘peoutstors were well managed thoy would be far more valuable properties than they now are, and prices would range permanently higher; but so Jong as many of ‘the managers of our teading railways are mere stock- jobbers, tho public Will fail to have that confidence in railway shares which the present condition and future prospects of our great arteries of inland trafficshouid warrant. Such is the dearth of business that very few commission houses on the street are making their ex- peuses, and these are hoping for orders as earnestly as the chiidren of Israel prayed for manna in the wilder- ess, ‘The only remarkable feature about the statement of the associated banks for the week is an increase of $4,279,045 in loans, owing to purchases of government fecprities by them, and a consequent decrease of $4,168,138 in legal tender notes, which have been paid imto the Sub-Treasury. The deposits have increased $1,004,022, showing that the internal exchanges are still in favor of this centre, The specie has increased $607,662 and the circulation $36,432, The totals of the present and previous statements stand thus:— fay 11. y 1 $253,082,329 $27,961,874 14,959,500 4. 567, 505,869 632; 200,242,852 7, 096, 524,319,769 299, 133 21,990,983 ‘There is nothing in these figures to excite distrust of the future of the money market, but, on the contrary, miuch that is reassuring, although the sluggish move- * ment of capital in business channels indicates the semi- Stagnation which still prevails in trade all over the country. Money is in abundant supply at six per cent on mixed collaterals and at five om governments, ‘and, owing to the dulness of business on the Stock Ex- ohange, the demand is light, Whe general business of the city is dull, and the dry @oods market has been unsettled and depressed for some time past, Goods have been marked down day by dgy without spparently creating any fresh demand, pur- Chases being still confined to the supply of immediate mecessitien, Hence commercial paper seeking discount teclesciy scrutinized, and only the best grade, of which EF te , passes freely at séven per fave eent, while good but ored, names submit to 8 a9 “At the ten o'clock railway shares were dal) ‘at only fractional from the closing prices on Segueday.
