The Sub-Treasury is understood to be selling vo nearly the extent o/; its daily receipta, and this partly neutralizes the effect of the drain for shipment, so far as the bor- rowing rates are concerned. The present price of gold fs maintained more by anticipations of further @bipments than by the current demand for port, and the firmness of the rates of exchange ves an undertone of strength to the market which it ‘would mot otherwise possess, The limited cotton and produce exporta cause the supply of exchange making to fall short of the demand at atime when the latter is ‘more than usually heavy.
