FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Tavespay, May 16—6 P.M. The railway share market has been extremely dull to- day, sad during the afternoon its tendency was dowa- ward, without any assignable cause, if we except a con- cocted rumor taat money was active, the absurdity of which is obvious in view of the absence of any marked demand either from the Stock Exchange or else where, The Sub-Treasury bas beem absorbing currency iatterly im payment for coin and new five-twenty bonds sold, and its balance this evening is up to $125,250,105; but the internal exchanges are still in favor of this city, and the Sub-Treasury will soon disburse currency about a8 rapidly as it absorbed it in payment for seven-thirty notes bought. It is almost neediess te remark that this buying and selling of securities by the government is a part of the funding system as at presen! practised. The stock market has beeu in such @ Semi-siagnant condition for the last fortnight that the brokers look upon apy change as de- sirable, very few of the comuission houses being able in the presemt atate of things to make their expenses, and activity with them being the life of business. The opposition to the recovery of prices is go strong among the great majority of the brokers themselves that the national currency is beld in check, and outside buyers are imtimidated by the local aspect of the stock market. It we look to the earnings of the leading roads, however, and the state of monotary affairs, we find much co strengthen conddence in the sta- tility of values and to atrmuiate purchases for a rise, and it isnot until wo find ourselves among the professional ~speculators of the Board of Brokers that the complexion of affairs assumes so cerulean a hue. With the prospect of unusually abundant crops before us, and with every indication that the value of the currency will be left undisturbed fora iong time to come, it seems only natural that the stock market should react from the ae- Pression to which it haa boen subjected since tho 1st of October, and that our trade and commerce should at tho same time revive; for there ia nothing in the present condition or probable tuture of the country to justify the gloomy forebodings which have boon freely indulged in of late. Money continues ia abundant supply, but a somewhat quicker demand was reported in some quarters in the afternoon, owing to efforts to advance tho rato for call loans to six per cent; and the exceptional transactions at this rato were more numerous than o* late. The general rate is still five per cent on mixed collaterals and four on governments, and, owing to tho light demand from the Stock Exchange, a large amount of capital is without legitimate employment.
