| | 67% a 34; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 723; a FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, Sompar, May 12, 1867. The railway share market was rather buoyant in its tone at the commencement of the week, and there was considerable activity in all the leading stocks, and espe- cially Erie; but it soon became dull and at .ntervals heavy, aud prices were lower at the close than at the opening. The speculative fecling is still tame, although 4t has @ superabundance of money to stimulate it into activity. A large majority of the members of the Stock Exchange are on the “bear’? side, and vigorously ‘resist every impetus of the “bulla” to give prices an upward impetus, The market has ‘been so long depressed, however, and quotations ule #0 fow in comparison with those current Jast fali—which will remind many of afall in another vaense—that a good argument fs furnished in favor of a strong reactionary movement, and such would seem to be inevitable, although thus far repeated promises have only lea to disappointment. The earnings of all the feading railways are large, and the crop prospects are favorable to @ considerablis increase of traffic, But for the corrupt and extravagant management of our rail- ways tho stocks represeniing them, which are the foot- balls of speculation in Wall street, would be worth much more than they are now selling for as permanent in- vestments, aud the timo will come when they will all be bought up as such, and when they cease to be active on the Stock Exchange their management will ve likely to improve, and their value as dividend-paying securities with it, Av present cmont of the leading railways familiar to the sirect are managed by and in the interest of stockjobbers, and it is therefore not surprising that the public should have Jost confidence in securities which arealternately ran up and run down by the men whose business it is to pro- tect the interests of stockholders, but who habitually sacrifice them in order to fill their own pockets. The market closea dull on Saturday at a -decline from the morning pmces, the follow- ing” quotations having been current at half-past five o’clock:—New York Central, 97%; a 3g; Erie, Reading, 102}; a %{; Michigan Southern, Rock Intand, 88% 0 89; Fort Wayne, 06% a 97; Northwest- a %; Pacilc Maul, Atlantic Mail, 96 a 97; Ohio and Mississippi 225; a %; Western Union Telegraph, 43 The Evropean news imparted a buoyant tone to the government gold-bearing securities, and they closed strong at a marked advance, in anticipation of @ foreign demand which it is to be hoped will spring for already a far larger amount of our securities are held abroad than itis to the interest of the country to have thers. The supply of money was in excess of the demand at #aGpercentto the Stock Exchange. The next bank ‘statement will show a further increase of five millions in deposits, although the legal tender notes have de- ¢reased about two millions. This last is accounted for ‘by an increase of five mu'lions im spect wid the fact that a portion of the deposits were as usual in national bank notes. The statement reflects the stagnation of capital at this centre, the increase of about three mil- lions in Joans being due to purchases of governments for the sake of employing money. but gegerally firm, The gold market was variable, throughout the week. In the first part it was strength- ‘ened by doubts as to the result of the Peaco Conférence in London, and later by a fractional advance in the sales of foreign exchange and the prospect of increased ship- menta of specie in the immodiate future. The demand ‘for customs duties at the port amounted to $2,157,000, and the Sub-Treasary disbursed $2,661,000 in paymont of ooin interest on the public debt, The decisive character of the war news 02 Saturday gave the pre- mium a downward tendency, notwithstanding that the ‘specie shipment by the several steamers amounted to $1,797,009—a larger export thau has taken piace on any ‘one day since last summer—and the closing transactions were at 135%{. The daily range was as follows:— Highest, Lown, « 137% 135%, see 138% 37, + 18836 + 133% 36 1879 138%, tes 13656 13536 The foreign exchange market was very firm in conse- quence of the light supply of bills, the Itmited receipts and shipments of cotton, and the recent heavy failure following another of neariy equal magnitude in the trade. The disbursement of the interest on the five- ‘twenty loan caused remittances to be made on account of eoupons sent here for collection by European bond- holders, and the rate for prime bankers’ sterling, at sixty days, advanced to 100%. Hence the suipment of about two millions of specie from this port and Boston during the week. The market closed nominally steady at 109% a % for bankers’ bills at sixty days on England, and 110% a % for short sight. Cotton bitis were out of favor, and had to submit to low rates, owiug to the distrust of credits connected with the staple, the almost steady decline in its price for a long time past having involved a large namb*r of firms bere and abroad in heavy lggses. The receipts last week at all the ports were slightly larger than in the previous week, namely:—19,661 bales, making a total since September 1 last of 1,679993 bales against 1,816,101 bales in the same period of the previous year. The total stock at all the ports according to the latest ad- vioes is 406,000 bales, Tho st&k at Liverpool on the 27th of April was 826,110 bales, and at London 48,582 bales, while 120,000 bales of American and 431,330 of Indian was estimated to be afloat. ‘There was a moderate degree of activity inthe trade of the city during the week, but the markets are still ‘unsettled. In cotton the fluctuations have been light ‘Dut frequent, and a very limited business was transacted. In dry goods there has been a rathor sluggish move- ‘ment, ana the opinion is expressed that the bulk of the ‘sprig trade is already over. The decline in cotion is accepted 23 a good reason why newly manufactured geodsshouid be marked down in price, and the ten- dency bas been downward for all but fine bleached fabrics and certain styles of prints, The large auc- ‘tion sales of domostics he'd near the close of ‘the previous week has established jower prices for all the inferior grades, The goneral prospects of trade throughout the country dre, however, improving, and the crops promise to be unusnally abun- dant, Early io July Southorn wheat will begin \o reach the markets, and the latter will be bare enougw to take all ‘that ofiers. At present corn is about the only artic.e that ‘the West has a good supply of, and evap this commands $1 25 a $1 35 a bushel in this city, The wool crop is ex- pected to be very heavy, although it is not probable tuat the market for it will open carly or buoyantly, owing to the dulnoss and depression in manufactures and the dry goods trade, The abundant crops, by enrichiog the farmers and incicasing the aggregate wealth of the country, ~ iil react favorably upon all departments of trade, rad at the same time stimnulate‘vur foreign com- me:00. The earnings of the Union Pacific Railway in the first week of May wore $43,000. ‘The transfer books of the Fort Wayne Railway Company ‘will bo closed on Saturday, the 18th inst., preliminary to »the meeting of the stockholders on the 25th inst., to de- * termine upon the proposed increase of the capital stock to the amount of $1,500,000. Here we have another in- ance of the prevailing propensity of railway managers ‘to water the stocks of the roads they control. The sys- tem is founded on @ wrong principle, and one directly calculated to impair the dividend-paying power of rail- ‘ways in proportion to the extent to which it ts carried. Tn relation to the case of Messrs. Ketcham and others growing out of the Schuyler fraud on the New Haven Railroad Company ordered back from the Court of Appeals for a now trial, and since heard with a result similar to the other cases growing out of that fraud, the directors’ say that a settlement of the game, umounting to $109,125, has boon made since the clore of the present tiscal year, and that with a very trifling exception (nino shares) the above extinguishes all demands upon the company on account of that fraud. ‘The 7 per cent bonds of the company falling due in De- “oember last, the Board of Directors, under authority of law 20 to do, diztributed new stock to retire the same, thereby incroasing the capital of the company to $6,000,000, COMMERCIAL REPORT.
