Since the dreaded first of May, with all its terrors and direful sounds is past, and people have decided upon a domicile for the rest of the year, the places of amuse- ment are receiving better patronage and the matinées begin to gladden, in the auditorium at least, the hearts of the managers. Yesterday tho beautiful little Theatre Frangais was crowded to its fullest extent with the wealth and fasbion (to use a novel expression) of the metropolis, and many late comers were unable to obtain even good standing room to view the matchless Elizabeth of Madame Ristori.
