4 THE. ANNIVERSARIES. AMERICAN MRASSIONARY ASSOCIATION. Addresses by Rev. Dr. Thompson and Rev, Dr. Northrop. ‘The twenty-first anniversary of :he American Miasion- ‘ary Association was he!d at Cooper Institute yesterday. ‘The proceedings were commenced at 3 o'clock PM, ‘when the Rev. Dr. Joseph P. Thompson anounced that paroobial duties prevented the attendance of the prosi- dont of the Association, Rev. Dr, Kirk, of Boston, and Chat in consequence the daty of presiding would devolve upon him, The exercises were then opened by the Rev. Dr. Taylor, Secretary of the Bible Society, who read the 67th Psalm and offered up prayer. Mr. Srrimsy, Secretary of the society, then read the report of the society's transactions for the past year, which went Om to state that the association had now completed the sixth year of its labor among the freed. men and the twenty-first of its existence, When the rebellion began a few slaves gathered near Fortress Monroe as “contraband of war;" and here, near where the first slave ship Innded i'6 eargo, the association established its Grst -freedmen's” school, and sent them missionaries and clothing. This was followed by similar steps eisewbere, and when emancipation became the foreshadowed result of the war, association felt providentially called and fitted to devote itself mainly to the elevation of the freedmen. It bes re- sponded to that call with clothing. schools, and the in- struction and consolat ons af religion, aud its missiona- ries aud teachers now amoug them. aumber over 470, its scholars over 38,000, and 118 appropr asiona in money and clothing for the ast Year were taore than ibe third of a million of tol ‘The Wesiryans and the Free Will Baptists 10 186% adopted i ad their channel for reaching the freadmeu, ine Nat onat Council of con- gregational Churches in Jane, 1865, selected tt {rom ali auxiliaries cad amlicies $96,230 1. ‘An address’ was thon read by Sevator Ferris, of Con- necticut, which addrosses were d: by Messrs. ey and Mason; and the boing WAN election for. trustees. resulted in the re.sleotion of the old officers. THE UNION THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY. The thirty fret agaual anniversary of the Union Theo- logwal Seminary whe celebrated tast evening, at tho Mercer Street Presbyterman churoh, with the customary addresses and distribution of diplomas. The proceed- Dgs opened with am appropriate prayer by the Rev. Mr. Lober, of Newhaven, invoking the bleqsing of Him above on the institute, while thanking him for past mercies and favors’ bestowed. After this a beautiful |-lerge quartette for malo voices, ‘Go Unto Christ,’ was sung by the chole, ‘The first point in the programme was the reading of am essay by Henry M: Booth, of Now York, on ‘The Popular Element in the Gospel,” ia which the orator took the ground that many believed there was not that adaptation fn the gospel to Ait it to an every day life, and was not im fact equal to the wants of man. What a mistake, however, this was. Men were blind; there was n0 song of gratulation to Him who had taid the foundations of the world, and painted the lites of the field, tis a popular question that the gospel has no popular element, but what is that popular element that it requires? The real object of religion is to satiafy those wants of man's nature which no earthly thing can appoase—those cray- Ings of the soul whieh all have felt no matter how irre- THE NATIONAL GUARD. Wield Day of the First Brigade. Tosterday aftornoes the Second, Twelfth and Keventy- firet regiments of infantry, National Guard, assembled at Tompkins square for the purpéne of dril!, under the com- mand of Brigadier Genoral William G, Ward. The re- cont disbandments of the Seventy-seventh and Ninety- aiath regiments gives this brigade « smaller appearance than formerly, a8 those organisations wore attached to the ame. The leas is, however, @ gain, inasmuch as thoy were imporfeotly organised and very poorly drilled. Hence, while the First brigade i@ smaller than before, it presents a more soldieriy and compact front. Although thore was considerable wind and dest blowing yesterday in the face of a genial sun, quite good turnout was made, and the attendance of the spectators was 80 as to romiad one of the familiar econes at East New York, when the parade ground at that place re- this occasion CITY INTELLIGENCE.
