Hanging of John Guedel for the Murder ef Adam Zimmerman—A Respite Expected fer the Condemned uv te the Last Moment. The Belleville (Illinois) correspondent of the Chicago ‘Times, under date April 26, gives the following account of the execution of a murderer in that place:— Jobn Guedel, the murderer.of Adam Zimmerman, was od here at twonty-three minutes to cleven A.M. There were ‘persons present, as it was gener. ally supposed the sentence would be commuted, so long a time having since ny iin murder, There had becn a respite to the criminal from March 29 to April 20. and there had been such strong influence in bis tavor brought to bear on the Governor that the execution was a matter of gurprise to the community. A from the *Governor, received last evening 4at nine o'clock, informed the Sheriff that the Governor, bough deeply regretting bis inability to relieve the un- fortanate criminal, did not feel at liberty to commute the The despatch was read to Guedel, who smiled and said :—*‘ Ob, I'll not be hung yet, ‘Send me in the morn- ing some cigars and a bottle of wine, He slept soundly -@uring the night and .ate his breakfast as usual. He pent the morning writing letters to various persons, @roking the wie aod smoking the egaraasnt him Hs ‘was very cool to the clergymen present. He said he had mo time to talk; that if there were a God he would be saved; f there were none, he didn’t care. At alittle after ten o'clock he was told he was to be hanged in « quarter of an hour. This seemed to surprise bim "Good God!” he said, “they won't hang me, willthey? If I’m bung put im the papers that I’m sorry for_my friends’ sake—for my poor old mother— and that I'm not guilty.” Going out with the Sheriff, he.did not seem much agi- tated, and walked up the steps of the scaflold quite Here, however, his courage failed him, and he Durst into tears. He calied several persons by name, shook bands with them, and told them good bye. Whon asked if he bad anything to say, he talked severai mainotes.in German, crying agtimes. He persisted in @eclaring bis innocence, and GBid that he was deserted by his lawyers, that the people of Madison county were murdering him. After the cap was adjusted, he cried out:—“I vores) to — ip death, dec! my innocence. e drop fell while he was speaking. He ‘struggled vory little. The legs were drawn up several times, there ‘were slight throes of the body, and all was over. After banging twelve minutes, the surceons Bounced bim dead. He was cut down and the vody delivered to the coroner for burial. Guede! was forty-one years of ago, and a native of Switzerland. He wrote several letters before his execu- ten—one to the Swiss consul and one to bis brother in hwitzeriand. Though he strongly asserted his innocence on the reaffuld, it was proved on the trial that he bad confessed ‘the murder, and other evidence, though circumstantial, proved his guilt beyond the shadow of a doubt.
