, NEW YORK HERALD, MONDAY, APRIL POLICE. INTELLIGENCE. A Pawson Kusren my Dirricuirr.—Yesterday morning Patrick McKeever, one of the prison keepers on Black- ‘well’s Island, was brought before Justice Dowling by officer Van Riper, of the Fifth precinct, on the complaint of William Barrett, residing at No. 17 Hubert street. In an affidavit made by the latter he says that as he and James Fields were going home at half-past twelve o'clock 4. The horse and wagon stolen-trom Mr. Post are valued at difficulties which threaten a conflict in Europe still ad- mit of a pacific solution, and not improbably will meet ‘with euch. “But, admitting war between France and Prussia to be inevitable, there is no reason why it should excite apprehensions of monetary or commercial dis- turbance in this country. In theface of three hun- dred and fifty millions of national and three hundred millions of other American securities being held abroad, gold would be certain to rule higher hero during a foreign war of magnitude than if Europe remained at peace, merely because of the possible contingencies to which this large indebtedness exposes us, and which war would be supposed to render more threatening. But tt might be that our securities would grow in pop- ular favor abroad, just as those of the belligerent nations declined in consequence of our remoteness trom the scene of action, and it is more than probable that our export trade would be greatly stimu- lated, owing to the inereased foreign demand for our produce, arising froth tho diversion Of labor from the farm to the battle field. This ‘would involve an increase of traffic over the main lines of railway extending westward, while the high price of gold would cause all other prices, for the time being, to range higher in proportion, and this would extend tothe Stock Exchange, as well as the geueral merchandise markets, ‘The raiiway share market closed steady on Saturday afvérnoon at a quarter past five at the following prices, Erie being the firmest stock on the list:—New York Central, 96 a i; Erie, 66% ©; Reading, 99% a 1003; Michigan Southern, 643 & 4; Illinois Central, 11234; Cleveland and Pitsburg, 67% a %; Rock Island, 8534 & 4%; Fort Wayne, 013 a 56; Northwestern, 805 a 4; do. preferred, 57K a %; Pacific Mail, 125 a }¢; Ohio and Mississippi certificates, 22 a 34; Western Union Tele- graph, 86 a %. Government securitics were firm throughout the week, notwithstanding the decline in five-twenties abroad, but the amount of basiness trans- acted in them was light, The money market was very easy during the week, and the supply of capital seeking employment is stil! increasing while the demand continues very light. Call loans were made to the slock houses at aix per cent, with exceptions at seven, and on government securities at five, while in some instances balances were loaned at four, First class commerciai paper wagin moderate supply and freely discounted at the banks at 6% 01 per cent, the general rate being seven; but inferior grades were out of favor, owing to ® certain degree of distrust which attaches to all but well known names in consequence of the prolonged dulness and depression of trade which have mecessarily weakened the majority of mercan- tile firms. The weekly statement of the banks will doubtless reflect the growing accumulation of capiial at this centre, and the inadequacy of the current demand to absorb it all, The legal tenders are expected to show an increase of between three and four millions, and the loans a decrease of about a million less, ‘The general merchandise markets have been un- settied by the fluctuations in gold, and although prices are in some instances a trifle higher than they were a week ago, they have not generally ro- sponded to the advance in gold, owing to the Popular impression that the latter may prove to be only temporary. The intervention of Good Friday checked business somewhat, as it was observed as a hol- iday by the mass of the mercantile community as well as in Wall street. Im the dry goods trade there was a fair degree of activity, and stocks of leading styles of goods having become reduced prices remained steady notwith- standing the decline in cotton. Of lower grades, how- ever, the supply for immediate sale was in excess of the demand and prices yielded slightly, the effect of which was to increase the demand for export. The foreign exchange market has been strengthened by the European political news and the further decline A Disuonest Baxxr.—Louis Cantel appeared before Justice Dodge, at the Jefferson Market Police Court, yes- terday, and made complaint against Michael Nice, a baker by trade, and employed by the complainant. A Dasrgeare Liquor Drater,—It is customary for the police om duty at midnight to establish themselves as near as convenient to the liqaor stores ®n their respec- tive beats, for the purpose of ascertaining who of the licensed dealers are most liable to commit a breach of the Excise law, and to bring the delinquent, when caught, to answer therefor. This isa fact very well known on all ides, and shrewd men in the liquor business invariably close their places and turn off the lights at five or ten minutes before twelve o'clock. There some however, appear, has of late grown to be quite common, so numer- ous are the occurrences reported, and it is high time that the police should be protected in the discharge of their duty and that example be made of such as interfero with them while engaged in making arresta.
