Communication from Protessor Baird, of the Smithsonian Lustitute, ‘Wasmorom, April 8, 1867. The following is the substance of the intormation de- rived from Professor Baird, of the Smithsonian Institute, with regard to Russian America:— MEANS OF INFORMATION, The Professor has bad two explorers in that fleld be- tween one and two years, who returned last autumn bringing a complete collection of specimens of natu history from the entire resioa extending from "the British possessions to the shores of the Polar sea, THE CLIMATE AND TEMPERATURE of the coast from Prince of Wales Isiand to the entrance of Bebring Straits, during the winter months ts about the same as at the city of ape yen There ts little snow and much rain, During summer months heavy fogs prevail, TIMER. The whole country, woil up to the northern coast, is heavily timbered—cbiefly hard pine foresta, the small trees extending down to tbe very shores. Some ol the Isiands also are heavily timbered with pine forests and dense undergrowth; others of them are itute of tim- ber, but covered wilh grass of }uxurians growth. THR SOIL, On the west coast the soil produces excellent barley and roots, such as rad.shes and turaips, and esculents, such as lettuce, cabbage, &c, ANDIALS, Furred animals, such a3 sea otter, river. otter, sable, furred seal, mink, black, sliver and red foxes are found winders; red deer on the south and reindeer on isu, ng, salmon, halibut and codfish abound in ex- haustiess numbers, In Bebring Straits and to the uorthward great Whales are very numerous.
