FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, Tavrspay, March 28—6 P. M. Money is still active, although an easier feeling is manifest. Call loans range from 6 to 7 per cent, with a good demand, but borrowers experience less difficulty than bas been prevalent for the past day or two, There is considerable stringency in nearly all the commercial centres of the country ; but it is presumed that the banks ‘are now so strengthened, iu order to make a favorable ‘Teport on the Ist ult,, that we may anticipate a relief from that pressure at an early day. With the plethora of idle capital at present existing in this city, which is 90 fully evidenced by the enormous investments daily ‘veing made in real estate, as well as by the fact that the inland exchange markets are all in our favor, necessi- tating large shipments of currency in order to preserve ‘balances, together with the extraordinary cheapness of money throughout Europe, a close market here would seem to be an anomaly, But it really exists, and we Presume that the sole cause is simply a lack of confi- dence; in what we cannot say. Certainly not in the government, for her bonds are strong and steadily appre- ‘Ciating; notin our people, for new enterprises of vast ‘magnitude are being developed and carried forward to ~completion daily. Perhaps the solution is in the inevita- ‘dle struggle that is taking and is to take place between paper and a specie currency. The stock market is better and somewhat firm in tone, Erie, the Northwestern shares, Michigan Southern and ‘Cleveland and Toledo (the latter on the announcement of a dividend), were stronger and active. New York Central and Rock Island alsoimproved in price. Pacific and Adan- ‘tic Mail closed at about the rates current Jast evening. Quicksilver and Cumberland are lower.
