Rio Jawzmo, Feb, 24, 1867. Igorder to “come to time,” as the pugitists say, as ‘meaas possible, consequent on the short month of Feb- ‘wuay, the mail steamer for New York leaves here at ten o’ckek A, M. on the 24th, instead of three o'clock P. M. one 25th, © ‘be news from the seat of war, as for several months «pai, is hardly worth recording. Our last information ‘thace ws dated from Corrientes on the 10th instant. The ocesional bombardment of Curupaity still continued, ‘emis, perbaps, being kept up tothe present time, A foidays ago the report was current here that its walls ha been destroyed, but it has been subsequently ascer- ‘Galed that the damage did not amount to much. Before “thj bombardment, which was carried on by the fleet, the wailuce in the Paraguayan fleet was such as to astonish ‘aby new Admiral (Ignacio), who consequently ordered a @eonnoissance by eight iron-clads. It resulted in the ‘dainty thatthe enemy was still alive. The vessels ‘db not suffer much, but the affair resulted in the loss of 0n of the best oMcers of the Brazilian navy—namely, ‘@h captain of tne iron-ciad Sitvado, Beyond occasional piket firing the army has done nothing, though inces- ‘ently haragsed by the Paraguagans, who are ever on the alt the intervention of the United States in this war, ‘though the good offices of Minister Washburne, is again ‘taced of, but not generally believed. ‘ Reinforcements continue to leave this city at the rate fRhree thousand men per month, but the commander- anchiof thinks—and very properly, too—that it is not tine yet to commence operations. While the Argentine troops were leaving Corrientes an epiosion took place on board the Marquis of Caxias, ‘casing forty deaths and injury to eighty more, Another eplosion took place on board the Fior de la Libertad, binging up Oriental troops, and some perished. The Agentine war steamer Buenos Ayres was run down by te Guarany, and the captain and three men drowned, Tie reason assigned for the Argentine troops leaving Orrientes was the necessity of putting down the revolu- tba iu the province of Kendoza, which is said, however, t& be nesrly extinguished. Many arrests have beep made in Buenos Ayres. Meanwhile the police had become informed of the contemplated fight, and about two o’clock a large foree from the armory, re- inforced by an additional number from the Twenty- second street sub-station, hurried toward the sceno of the supposed conflict. But they came too late, The fight was over more than two hours before. Both the princi- pals were arrested to-day and will be held for trial, POLICE INTELLIGENCE. Governor Geary, in vetoing tho bill authorizing the Pennsylvania Rauroad Company to increas its capital stock and to borrow money, gives as two of his objections the want of a limit to the increase, as also to that power ‘being vested in the Board of Directors. He thinks all corporate powers should be limited, and that the power to increase should be vested in the stockholders. The capital of the company originally authorized was seven and a half millions, with the privilege of increasing it to ten millions, should @ mec‘ing of sharcholders so de- vermine, This mode of increasing the capital the Governor thinks entirely proper. Subsequently, by act approved April 23, 1852, the capital stock was further increased to thirteen million dollars, May 6, 1852 to four- teen millions of dollars; March 23, 1855, to eighteen mil- lions of dollars; May 2, 1855, to twenty millions of dollars ; and March 2, 1966, to thirty millions of dollars, Com- menting on this, the Philadelphia Ledg-r says:—‘In these particulars the Governor is unquestionably right, and it is probable, even should both houses pass the bill over the veto, that a supplemental bill will be passed, making the law conform to his views.” A new bill has since passed both houses of the Peansyivania Legwlature, authorizing the company to issue three hundred thou- sand shares of stock by authority of its stockholders, SALES AT THE NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE, Saterday, March 23—10:30 A.
