Sarvapay, March 9—6 P, Mf, $50000: ‘The stock market has been very firm to-day, owing to | Mus 00.3" ¢ do. the efforts of certain parties acting in concert to twist tho “ghoris,” or at feast frighten them into “covering.” ‘The means of the active “bulls”? are, however, limited, and the rise has been too sharp to be fully sustained, although a gradual improvement in prices may reasonably be looked for now afver the extreme depression of the ast few months At thesame time it must be remem- bered that the outside support to the markot is so alight that a vigorous bear attack might entirely revorse the course of prices, The supply of money was abundant at seven per cent, with exceptions to first class houses at six, and the latter were.more numerous than yester- day. The supply of commercial paper offering for dis- count includes a considerable amount of produce notes, which are closely scrutinized; but the best grade of New York city paper at sixty days passes freely at seven per cent. Inferior grades are out of favor with the brokers fand have to submit to high rates among the note shavers, A favorable bank statement ts anticipated forthe week, and the rumor that it would show an increase in the amount of legal tender notes had considerable influcnce over the course of prices late in the afternoon. Throughout the West s good demand for money is reported ; but trade in the general markets is improving, and this has the effect of strengthening confidence among capitalists, while the distrust which prevailed a few weeks ago bas largely disappeared. At Chicago the banks report an increased demand for money, which is traceable to a growing speculative feeling in the leading produce markets, and a close ecrutiny of names is ob- served to the exclusion of those of inferior grades. Ex- change on the East is in abundant supply, although the counter rates remain at par buying, and 1-10 pre- mium selling. At the ten o'clock session of the open board railway shares were firm. New York Central sold at 102%; Erie, 55%; Reading, 1024¢; Michigan Southern, 71% a %; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 8134 a %; Northwestern, 343¢ @ %; do. preferred, 62%; Rock Island, 95%; Fort Wayne, 94%; Western Union Telegraph, 42a 42%. At the first regular board there was a brisk demand for all the leading railway shares, and especially Erie, Pacific Mail was active at 125 a 126, and Atlantic Mail was steady at 91 a 91%. New York Central closed 3 higher than at the same time yesterday, Erie 1, Michigan Southern %, Illivols Central 34, Northwestern 34, Obio and Mississippi Cer- tiftcates 3, Pacifle Mail 1, Atlantic Mail 1, Quickstiver 4%, Cumberland %, Milwaukee and St Paul preferred 34, Western Union Telegraph 3. Missouri sixes were active and advanced one per cent under the prospect of the Legislature acting upon the statement of the Gov- ernor, that the finances of the State are in a condition to warrant a restoration of its credit, What this mcans remains to be seen, but it is evident that there are speculators here ‘“bulling’’ the market for them, who of course have a personal motive to serve by so doing. There is consequently some danger of their overstepping the proper mark, and in proportion as they do so it becomes Gangerous to buy Missouri State sixes. Ten- nessee sixes advanced . Government securities were heavy. Coupon five-twontles of 1862 showed a decline of 34, issue of 1865 54, ten-forties %{, seven-thirty notes of the first series 34. At the ono o'clock open board the market showed an increasing firmness, New York Central sold at 103%; Erie, 56; Hudson, 139; Reading, 1023; a 34; Michigan Southern, 72 a 7234; Illinois Central, 116; Cieveland and Pittsburg, 81%; Rock Island, 95% a %; Northwestern, 34% 0%; do. preferred, 62% a63; Forte Wayne, 953%, 8 5%; Pacific Mail, 126 a 12634; Atlantic Mail, 85.0 $63¢. Subsequently there was an active demand for the stocks most largely oversold, and Erie advanced to 60 in the midst of great excitement, but reacted at a quarter to six o'clock to 68% a %, at which time the following quotations were current:— New York Central, 103 a {; Erie, 68% a %; Reading, 102% = %; Michigan Southern, 72% a %; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 82 a <; Rock Island, 95% a 96; Fort Wayne, 95% a %: Northwestern, 35 a 3; do. preferred, 6354 © 34; Pacific Mail, 126. 127; Atlantic Mail, 8734.
